A New Start for the Welsh Liberal Democrats JANE DODDS “Wales faces challenges like none it has ever faced before. Brexit threatens our urban and rural economies. Conservative cuts threaten our public services. Climate change threatens our future. Disillusion and disengagement threatens our politics. Now, Wales needs the Liberal Vince Cable supporting Jane’s campaign Democrats more than ever”. to win Montgomeryshire in 2015 This is what I want us to do: ● I want us to rebuild our reputation for being at the cutting edge of new radical policy ideas for Wales. ● I want us to build our membership, to at least 4,000 in Wales in five years time. ● I want us to build strong campaigning teams, both at the centre and in every constituency and region. ● I want us to double our number of councillors in 2021 and to win a record number of assembly seats. ● In the next Westminster election, whenever it comes, we will have a team of Welsh Liberal Democrats back in the House of Commons. And here’s how we can start do it. Within 100 days of being elected, I will have: ● Visited every local party in Wales to meet members and listen. ● Built a strong, outward facing leadership team that develops our members, promotes our message and builds our finances and organisation. ● Published a consultation document to lead the debate on getting the best for Wales if Brexit goes ahead, covering agriculture, the economy and public services. ● Reviewed the way we operate to improve communication with members. The strong sense of caring for your neighbour, tackling injustice and building a fairer society. The truth is though, it wasn’t until I attended University in Cardiff that I understood how special that sense of community is, and that through political work we can bring people together and strengthen our communities for the benefit of all.” Since her University days Jane has built her career working for charities and in the public sector. “My work has given me huge experience in helping people, from vulnera- ble young people facing abuse to elderly people who cannot get the support they need.” It’s time for new ideas Society is changing fast, and too many people are being left behind. Let’s consider: ● Universal Basic Income to cut the costs of welfare and enable people to get out of the poverty trap. ● Workplace democracy to give people a real stake in the place they work. ● Statutory time off work for Welsh learners, helping to ensure the use of the Welsh language at work. I strongly support Vince Cable’s call for measures to reduce the inequalities between the older and younger generations and to look at ways making the wealthiest pay more in tax. Public Perceptions of Basic Income in the West Midlands 'Red Wall' Alex de Ruyter and David Hearne Foreword By Michael Pugh, Director, Basic Income Conversation We at the Basic Income Conversation want to see a basic income happen.. We blend organising, advocacy and research to promote basic income in the UK and fundamentally we think the best way to get people talking about this big idea is through conversation - hence our name. The conversation about basic income is spreading at a rapid pace. Even before the pandemic there was growing interest in the idea but that has grown considerably in the last 12 months as the pandemic forces us to face up to the realities of the changing labour market and inadequate social security system. However, as conversations spread, it’s increasingly important to focus on how we have those conversations. How we talk about this big idea is vitally important. Are there certain phrases or stories of ways of talking about basic income that make people more or less interested? Are we framing the idea with the right language? Have we got the right narrative? If we can understand public perceptions better, it will help advocates and politicians better craft their conversation and campaign messages. This study carried out by the team at the Centre for Brexit Studies, in collaboration with us at the Basic Income Conversation, helps us begin to understand these questions. We wanted to test basic income in areas of electoral significance. The report makes reference to so- called Red Wall voters. In some ways it’s quite a frustrating term but it’s been used to describe the constituencies that were long held Labour seats until the Conservatives won them in 2017 and particularly 2019.

During the three and a half hour debate there were several mentions of the GMC and in particular our Medical education ability to test the language skills and competency of foreign doctors. Appointments The public affairs team provided a briefing to the Conservative Party on the GMC’s position on the language and skills testing of doctors. Future events and Shadow Health Minister Mark Simmonds MP quoted from our briefing party conferences during the debate, reflecting our concerns that "the current legal framework is unsatisfactory" and "the current system does not adequately safeguard patients". The Liberal Democrats published a series of proposals for reform to the out of hours care system and the employment of overseas doctors on 27 January 2010. These called for a language and competence test for doctors from the European Economic Area (EEA) who wish to register with the GMC and for EEA regulators to immediately notify each other of fitness to practise incidents which lead to action being taken against a healthcare professional. Paul Philip recently met the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Health, Norman Lamb MP, to discuss issues relating to language testing and overseas doctors.
