The Vicar’s Letter Love Where U Live Live Auction of Promises, July 9-10th!... and much more... Hi all! There have been some great highlights over the last month or so, and we are very grateful to the ongoing help and support of a number of people without whom what we do would just not be possible. On Sunday 2 May we had another open-air service on Terling Church Green, and enjoyed singing hymns and songs in the fresh outdoors, accompanied by the skilled hands of Sam Edwards on the piano. We were outside again on Sunday 9 May in the evening at Fairstead Church, accompanied by the no less skilled wings of a red kite as it drifted overhead on the evening breeze. A beautiful setting for an intimate gathering together as we remembered the sacrifice of Jesus, through the sharing of bread and wine. For the Abbott family, the rest of the month was taken up by preparing for Fiona's hip operation, and the successful recuperation since. Thank you so much to those of you who have prayed and sent support for us. Looking forward, we continue to serve local people in need through Love Where U Live, and we're delighted to say, back by popular demand, we have our next live Facebook Auction of Promises, running from midday 9 July to midday Saturday 10 July. As I write, we already have donated promises of a Beach Hut voucher, a Hotel Chocolat hamper, Lego, Tiptree gin, £30 Colchester zoo vouchers, Scentsy goodies, and Bodyshop goodies. As a direct result of people's generosity last time, we have been able to help so many families in very real difficulties over this time, so if you're able to donate something for auction, or able to bid for items over that 24-hour period, that would be fabulous. See you there! God bless. Rev Will

All Change! It wasn’t the change we were generally hoping for from the Government, but hopefully this edition will be reaching our 450 subscribers in paper format once more. Thank you all for your patience during the last 14 months, but we know you would not have wanted to risk the health of our great volunteer distributors. At last though, with luck, they will now be able to chat once more to many of their friends and neighbours while delivering the magazine. The churchwardens of the four parishes, our distribution maestro Sue and I met up for a garden meeting last month and discussed the way forward for the magazine. We know that many readers will be pleased to get back to having a paper copy to hand for easily looking up local suppliers and checking on the time and date for a club or other event. Others like the online version and the colour that brings. It is not financially practical to have a colour printed version, and although other churches do have colour, but generally they also charge their advertisers very much higher rates than we do. We like to ensure our local businesses can afford to advertise and attract and keep their local customers. Please make the Parish News your first place to look when you need a supplier. We will be continuing with the online magazine as well as the printed version. For printed delivered editions from September 2021 our distributors will come to request £5 subscriptions from all those homes who had paid in January 2020. The subscription will cover the next 12 months and the next collection will be made in September 2022. This also helps the distributors avoid having to collect money in the dark and cold new year period. Payment can be made ideally by cash, or cheque. We regret that cards cannot be accepted. To continue with the online version after September there will be a separate charge of £5 for the year which will NOT be collected by the distributor. Please email your request to [email protected]. We will then arrange for you to be given the payment and download details for the future editions of the Parish News from September 2021 to August 2022. Despite the delay in lifting the last covid restrictions, hopefully July will see us able to enjoy some more social events during the summer and I am delighted to say we have a number of events now being planned and advertised within the magazine. We have seen what wonderful communities exist in the four parishes during these last months, and we have the opportunity to build on that by getting out and meeting our village friends and neighbours once more and enjoying the very things that make living in our villages so wonderful. Please make sure you pencil these events in to your calendars and show your support by attending. Heather

White Notley Football Club

The much interrupted season is over, all-in-all we’ve had a pretty good season and kept smiling. The First team reached the final of the Essex & Suffolk Border League Knock-Out Cup but were beaten 3-1 on the day by a strong Colne Athletic side in front of a 150+ crowd at Little Oakley FC. Local lad Regan Farley-Hearn scored our only goal with a well struck penalty kick. Despite being bitterly disappointed the lads could hold their heads high knowing they represented the club admirably on the day. The games came thick and fast for the Reserve team as they completed their season in the first week of June. Three wins and two defeats sees them currently sit in third place in the Mid-Essex League Division One table, however as you will see from the table below if Notley FC beat Harold Wood on Saturday 19th June they will leapfrog us. However it finishes its been a great season for the team who now can start planning for the new campaign.

Following the restart of football in March we resumed with just one Veterans team, competing in the Essex Veterans League Division Three (East). A win, a draw and a loss rom the last three games completed a season of mixed results and the guys finished in the top half of the table come the close. It has been noticeable towards the end of the season that more local people from both Faulkbourne & White Notley have been to watch a game or two at Oak Farm, we sincerely hope to see many more drop in to watch a game when the new season kicks off, perhaps enjoy a drink from the bar and cheer the lads on. On 2nd June we hosted a Pre -Academy Festival in association with West Ham Utd Academy. Around fifty children aged 6 to 10 were there and were put through

The day was an overwhelming success with huge smiles all round from the kids and parents alike. Coffee Time at the Old Dairy The Old Dairy

Coffee Time on Saturday August 21st 2021 Covid regulations permitting.

Historic Terling Group Like many of you no doubt, we seem to be fairly used to the vagaries of IT these days, just in time, hopefully, that we will soon be able to meet in person once more. We had hoped that the June meeting would be in person but as I write this it appears it might be via Zoom again. We have continued in various ways to pursue items of interest and as always Mervyn has been the hardest at work on more census records and also unearthing many interesting news clippings kept by his late parents. The census records have already been loaded to the www.historicterling.wordpress.com website and are frequently consulted by visitors to the site. The news clips are being gradually loaded and one features in this magazine showing a cricket team from the 1800s and here, the retirement of Headmaster Mr Hobbs in 1964. Anne has been working with the school on their local history projects and was very impressed by the youngsters questions when she recently visited. Now Essex Records Office has partially Left to right: opened Robin hopes to do more research Gerald Isted, Mr. Hobbs, Mrs. Hobbs, into the Terling Provident Society and Clare Lady Rayleigh, Rev. Our July meeting will be at 2.30pm on Thursday 22nd July in the Tower Room of Terling Church. We would love you to join us for a cuppa and a chat. Page 44 The Parish News. The Hangover Our thanks to Jeanne MacWillson (Though we cannot imagine what put this in her mind as her subject!)

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a “The Twopenny Hangover. This comes hangover as “a severe headache or a little higher than the Embankment. At other after-effects caused by drinking the Twopenny Hangover, the lodgers sit an excess of alcohol” or it can be in a row on a bench; there is a rope in something that remains from the past front of them, and they lean on this as such as a surviving custom or any though leaning over a fence. A man, leftover business not completed. humorously called the valet, cuts the rope at five in the morning.” Many claim that the hangover has nothing to do with alcohol but refers to An earlier reference is made in Charles the practice in Victorian workhouses, in Dickens’ ‘The Pickwick Papers’: which inmates slept by draping their “And pray, Sam, what is the twopenny arms over a stretched-out rope which rope?’ inquired Mr. Pickwick. ‘The they ‘hung over’ as it supported them. twopenny rope, sir,’ replied Mr. Weller, If you were homeless or destitute and ‘is just a cheap lodgin’ house, where lived on the streets and you had the beds is twopence a night.’ Mr managed to make some money during Weller’s explanation for why a bed was the day, you could spend the night in called a rope was: “They has two ropes, one of three ways; paying a penny to sit ’bout six foot apart, and three from the -up on a bench all night in a hall, two floor, which goes right down the room; pence to ‘hang-over’ a rope, or 4 or five and the beds are made of slips of pennies to lie down. coarse sacking, stretched across ’em ……the advantage o’ the plan’s It is interesting that there are two obvious. At six o’clock every mornin’ references to two penny hangovers in they let’s go the ropes at one end, and literature: down falls the lodgers.” The clearest explanation is in George Jeanne Orwell’s ‘Down and Out in London and Paris’: With thanks to Historic UK for the inspiration.
