iven the International Federation team and World GChampionships success enjoyed by Southern Californians in Perth, Australia, it would seem that their adaptability and talent turned them into first rate grass courts players. Anyone thinking that this statement is an exaggeration need only look at the results. Glenn Erickson captained the Men’s 40 Trabert Cup winner. Gretchen Magers was stalwart, going undefeated in the Women’s 40 Young Cup victory. As he does annually, Mike Fedderly played a major role in the Men’s 45 Dubler Cup trophy triumph. Tracey Thompson was a member of the Women’s 45 Cour t Cup team that California was well represented in Perth. Photos: Pat Parsons was a finalist. Geoff Cykman was on the Men’s 50 Perry Cup squad that did the same. Judy Louie, (who wrote the story on page 3), played for the Women’s 55 Connolly Cup team that also reached the final. Jennifer Dawson was on the Women’s 35 Lenglen Cup team that finished third. Kandy Chain, Leslie Airola-Murveit and Carolyn Nichols were all part of the Women’s 50 Bueno Cup third place result. Curtis Dunn and captain Hunter Gallaway were involved in the Men’s 35 Italia Cup fourth place finish. In individual play, which the host country dominated, taking eight of the 20 titles, locals were steadfast. Erickson teamed with singles winner Mario Tabares to take the Men’s 40 doubles title. 1. It is imperative to always use your USTA number when entering tournaments. All results are calculated using this number rather than your name.If you neglect to include the number, and the tournament director is unable to find it, you may not get credit for playing the event.

2. Southern California will use an updated version of the STAR ranking system to calculate seeding lists and final rank- ings. The new version, called WINSTAR, is based on the same principles that have always been used. The most impor- tant factor is the quality of wins and losses during a twelve month period, not rounds reached nor tournaments won.

3. The lists that are currently posted may not have all The men’s teams are always competitive... results. They are as accurate as possible, but in the past there were missing USTA numbers. If you or your opponent didn't have a number in the system, that result will not appear on your record. An effort to rectify errors will be made, but only if requested in writing to the SCTA, listing your name, the division, tournament name and date, and results as you believe they should be. Please do not call the office. Without a written request, no change can be made. Currently a transition process is taking place. Things will improve as the year progresses. Aspecial “thank you”is expressed to Doug and Julie Wrege and their family for handling tournament draws, along with ranking and seeding lists, at www.tennisinformation.com over the years; most particularly during 2004. They did an outstanding job for tennis, and provided a great service for the players and administrators. ...and so are the women’s.
