11 Hoby School photograph from the early 1900s. Matt Javis’s uncle found this photograph of Hoby School at a fair. It is a fantastic photograph which we believe would have been taken in the early 1900s. The number of pupils probably reflects the very large families people used to have. The Hoby & District Local History Society are always happy to copy any old photographs you may have or find. These and others can be seen on our web site http://www.hobyanddistricthistory.co.uk/ under the gallery tab.

Linda and Garry Adey are leaving Rotherby after nearly 40 years.

It is time for us to move on and we would like to thank all the friends we have made over the years for the help and friendship shown towards us. We have a lovely couple with 3 young children moving into our house and we are sure that they will enjoy the village as much as we have. Best wishes Lynda, Garry, Pippa and Andrew.

12 Conservation work needed in Hoby Church The relocation of the Fifteenth Century benches (pews) into the Nave in March, has allowed the DCC to fully assess their current state. Unfortunately, more age related damage than had previously been apparent has become evident. Therefore, it has become necessary to seek the opinion of a conservation expert.

Anthony Beech, a Church of approved conservator from Stamford, visited the church in August to give an initial visual assessment of the damage to the bench ends and their base supports. He identified that this has been caused by a combination of wet rot, dry rot and also Deathwatch Beetle. In addition, the general wear and tear to be expected with items of this age has also had an impact.

The benches are considered to be of great historic significance and as a consequence urgent action needs to be taken in order to prevent further deterioration. The DCC are awaiting Anthony Beech’s preliminary written report, which will indicate what measures can be taken and the likely costs to implement the work needed to sensitively conserve these ancient benches.

The DCC hope that funding from church based grants will cover the majority of this work. However, your continuing support at fund raising events helps enormously with maintenance costs and general repairs to the church. Make a note in your diaries for our next fund raising event, which will be the Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday November 10th.

Look out for more details over the coming weeks for some exciting new additions to last year’s stalls.

13 We were Very Lucky

In June we announced we had been successful in obtaining a £10,000 National Lottery Grant to fund an independent Character Assessment of the Parish. “Carroll Planning & Design” were engaged and their Report has now been completed. It's a fascinating, comprehensive picture of our beautiful community. At the end of the month you will be able to see its 100 colourful pages by going on to our website. We are also placing reference copies in each of the four Churches and Chapel.

The Report is being used as part of the evidence collected for the Parish’s Neighbourhood Development Plan. A detailed traffic survey was undertaken in September and the Working Group has been considering related policies and a range of other issues that you said you would like to see addressed. We will be consulting with you on the Draft Neighbourhood Development Plan in the New Year. Incidentally, Melton Council is due to approve the Melton Local Plan, of which our Neighbourhood Plan is its local detailed application, during October.

Bird Nest Box Cleaning Now the breeding season is over for birds nesting in small and medium nest boxes, the old nests can be removed and the boxes cleaned out. Under the terms of the ‘Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981’, if unhatched eggs are found in the box, they can only legally be removed from October to January and they must be destroyed. It is illegal to keep them. When cleaning out your nest boxes it is advisable to wear surgical gloves and a dust mask. Old nests may harbour fungi growing on damp nest material, which can cause respiratory diseases. Nests can also house a variety of parasites such as fleas, lice and ticks. It is best, therefore, when removing the old nest to put this straight into a plastic bag and seal it before disposal.

Autumn marks the end of the breeding season when all nest boxes should be cleaned. Annual cleaning is best carried out in October and November when there is no chance of disturbing the previous occupants. By cleaning the box you will remove any ticks and fleas along with their eggs and help reduce the risk of diseases being passed on to the next season’s broods.

It is not unusual to find a small number of eggs that have failed to hatch, or some young that have died. Blue tits and great tits may lay over a dozen eggs to allow for such losses. Sudden cold snaps, food shortage, predation or simply inexperience can all lead to complete nest desertion, or limited survival rates.

We recommend the following 3 easy to remember steps for cleaning: 1) Remove all used nest material (if there are unhatched eggs or the remains of dead chicks in the nest see above advice). 2) Clean using boiling water to kill any remaining parasites and their eggs. You may also want to disinfect the box using a specialist veterinary recommended product which is completely safe for birds. Insecticides and flea powders must not be used. 3) Allow sufficient time to dry thoroughly before replacing the lid. Do not use any wood preservatives, fumes get trapped inside the nest chamber and may be toxic to birds.

16 You don’t need to put any nesting material into the box, but if you want to you can put some hay or sawdust in the bottom of the box, but not straw as it can harbour mold. You may find in the spring that you see birds taking this material out of the box, but that’s OK as it means they may be nesting soon and are just having a clear out, or they may just be using the material as the base for their new nest.

If birds do show an interest in the box, resist the urge to take a peek as it may put them off. Birds can check out a few potential nest sites before they choose the one they like, so they may start taking nesting material into the box and then give up. Hopefully, that won’t happen and they will make full use of your nest box and raise their young successfully. You can put nest boxes up at any time of the year, so you don’t need to wait for the spring. If you put boxes up that have different size access holes, you may have more than one species of bird nesting in your garden. If you have any open fronted boxes, which are excellent for Robins and Wrens don’t forget to clean these out in the same way as the small hole cavity boxes.

If you need any advice regarding appropriate types of nest boxes for your garden; choosing suitable locations for them; or simply how to make a box; please contact us at the email address below. We only have one small hole cavity nesting box in our garden but it has been occupied by house sparrows for the last 3 years with reasonably good breeding success. Let’s hope they return again next year. If you have had success with birds using boxes for nesting in your garden we would like to hear from you. Garry and Candice Barker ( [email protected] )

17 Final Half Muffled Quarter Peals: John Wheatley & William Crane

On 3rd & 19th October the final half muffled quarter peals of our four year project will be rung to commemorated the centenary of the deaths in the First World War of John Wheatley & William Crane. Below are the biographies of John & William.

Second Lieutenant John Charles Wheatley Died of Wounds 3rd October 1918 John Wheatley was the son of Charles Wheatley and his wife Sarah. Charles Wheatley was the village schoolmaster in Hoby but by 1918 had moved to Long Whatton to take up a similar post there. John had been born in Loughborough in 1899 and was 19 years old when he died of his wounds at Ramicourt in France on 3rd October 1918. He is commemorated on the memorial at the Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery. John did some initial officer training in Nottingham before enlisting in the 28th London Regiment, otherwise known as the Artists Rifles. This was a specialist officer training regiment responsible for providing replacements for the many junior officers killed on the Western Front. John Wheatley was a Corporal in the Rifles; he was then commissioned in the Sherwood Foresters on 26th June 1918 and posted to the 1/5th Battalion in France in July.

The battle at Ramicourt on 3rd October 1918 which cost him his life is famous in the history of the 1/5th Battalion as the one in which Sergeant William Johnson won the Victoria Cross. The area around the village of Ramicourt, north of St Quentin, was part of the Hindenburg Line system of trenches, fortified villages and gun emplacements which formed the last line of German defences on the Western Front. On the morning of 3rd October 1918 waves of allied soldiers were advancing behind an artillery barrage towards these well defended enemy positions.

Sergeant Johnson’s Victoria Cross citation describes his heroic actions on that occasion and offers an insight into the situation which will have faced John Wheatley as a platoon leader in the same location before he was fatally wounded: When his platoon was held up by a nest of enemy machine guns at very close range. Sergeant Johnson worked his way forward under very heavy fire, and single-handed charged the post, bayoneting several gunners and capturing two machine guns. During this attack he was severely wounded by a bomb but continued to lead forward his men. Shortly afterwards the line was once more held up by machine guns. Again he rushed forward and attacked the post single-handed. With wonderful courage he bombed the garrison, put the guns out of action and captured the teams.

19 Half muffled quarter peels at Hoby.

On the 1st September at 5pm as the Hoby and District Horticultural Show came to an end, the Framland Ringers, from Melton and the surrounding area rang the church bells at All Saints' for their 15th half muffled quarter peel (of 18) to commemorate and in memory of Private Sydney Graham who was born in Hoby and was killed in action on the 1st September 1918.

The ringers involved have rung for many of these quarter peels but one person, Wendy Saywell has rung for all of them so far, and plans to ring for all 18 of the rings.

The History Society are most grateful to the Framland Ringers for their dedication to this unique project and for ensuring that they have rung on the actual centenary of the death of all the men named on our war memorials.(The final two rings in October are covered elsewhere in this magazine.) 20 HOBY & DISTRICT WI ACHOLI BEADMAKING

Thursday October 4th 7.30pm Hoby and District Village Hall Join us for a talk, demonstration and hands on craft session led by Alison Rocket our speaker for the evening. Whilst teaching in Kampala, Uganda in 2005, Alison met the Acholi people living on the outskirts of the city. The Acholi people had been displaced from the north of the country due to the civil war and were eking out a living crushing stone in hazardous conditions. To help make ends meet the women sold homemade jewellery made from rolled up paper. Alison realised that there was potential for the Ugandan women to form a collective and to sell their jewellery in the UK thus, earning enough money to not only enable them to give up stone breaking, but also to improve their living conditions and send their children to school. At the meeting we will learn about The Acholi Beadcraft Collective whilst making beads for an item of jewellery to take home. There will also be bead jewellery on sale, which will directly help the Ugandan women. The WI is a great way to make new friends. The price for guests is £5. Everyone is welcome, but please let us know in plenty of time so that we have sufficient bead making materials and enough of our famous supper to go round: email:[email protected]; telephone: 01664 434370

We recently broke the British record for a Rolex Submariner watch sold at auction. On 11th October 2017 we sold an example made c.1964 with orange numerals for nearly £280,000 including premium. This achievement was reported in the national media. The owner consigned the watch to auction at one of our valuation events in the east of England. Many other star items have turned up at our events. We look forward to meeting the public in the area

38 The History of Halloween Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter. By 43 A.D., the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of “bobbing” for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

39 Greenpeace helping to tackle plastics Right now an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of plastic – everything from plastic bottles and bags to microbeads end up in our oceans each year. That’s a truck load of rubbish a minute. Travelling on ocean currents this plastic is now turning up in every corner of our planet – from Cornish beaches, to uninhabited Pacific islands. It is even being found trapped in Arctic ice. Our oceans are slowly turning into a plastic soup and the effects on ocean life are chilling. Big pieces of plastic are choking and entangling turtles and seabirds and tiny pieces are clogging the stomachs of creatures who mistake it for food, from tiny zooplankton to whales. Plastic is now entering every level of the ocean food chain and even ending up in the seafood on our plates.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Greenpeace is campaigning to end the flow of plastic into our oceans. We are calling on big corporations to act to reduce their plastic footprint and stop producing excessive plastic packaging that is designed to be used once then thrown away. We are also calling on governments to act to tackle this problem, by creating closed loop systems that allow us to recover and reuse materials rather than waste them. It’s not too late – if we act together now we can protect the world’s precious oceans for future generations. Indonesia - the world's second biggest plastics polluter after China - has pledged to reduce plastic waste into the ocean 75% by 2025, but some observers doubt legal rules are strong enough to make this happen. Plastic waste is also on the agenda for China Council - an influential high level dialogue in which world experts advise China's leaders on environmental issues. Kenya itself has banned single-use plastic bags, along with Rwanda, Tanzania and soon- Sri Lanka. Bangladesh has had controls for many years, especially to stop bags clogging up drains and causing floods.
