Reception – Home Learning Pack

Hello to any Reception pupils who are self-isolating at home right . Below are some ideas of things you can do at home with your grown up. Hopefully ’ve provided a range of activities for you to complete! These activities can be shared with me via class dojo or brought into school when you return.

Mathematical Development

• Count forwards and backwards to 20 • Count to 100 • Count in 2s to 10 and count in 10s to 100. • Count everything! Toys, pillows, shoes etc… • Practise writing numbers to 20. • Order number flashcards from 0 to 20. • Add two big numbers together. Lock the biggest number in your head and count on using your fingers. • Sing number songs e.g. 5 little speckled frogs • Recognising / matching / counting coins e.g. play ‘shops’ • Time – talk about day time / night time and morning/afternoon • Days of the week each morning and months of the year – What day was it yesterday? What day will it be tomorrow? • Seasons – Autumn, Spring, Summer Winter – could you go on a walk to look for signs of spring and new life? • Shape hunt – look for 2D shapes. Make a tally chart. • Hide objects under a blanket. ‘Close your eyes’. Take one away. How many are left? • Play Simon Says – Focus on forwards, backwards, right and left. ‘Take 2 steps forwards.’ ‘Jump 3 times to the left.’ • Sort objects – sort blue socks and red socks. Sort big shoes and small shoes. Sort coloured blocks. • Make repeating patterns using colours, toys, shoes, blocks – red car, blue car, green car, red car, blue car, green car … • Measure ingredients when cooking – heavy/light • Capacity – use the language full, half full, half empty, empty - jugs /cups/pots and pans in the bath/sink • Positional language - put the toy in/on/under/next to/behind/in front of a box • Use the language ‘long’ and ‘short’ e.g. “find me something longer than this” • Find things that are taller and shorter than you. • Measure objects in the house using lego blocks. How long is the /sofa/rug?

Language, Literacy and Communication

• Recognise family names • Write first name and second name • Sing Nursery Rhymes, e.g. Old McDonald, • Play with small world toys e.g. farm animals • Put on a birthday party for their favourite toy • Listening to a range of stories – ask children to point to a certain character or think what will happen next in the story. • ‘Kim’s Game’ – collect items on a tray and cover with a tea towel – how many objects can your child remember? • Learn tricky words and high frequency words • Read daily – traditional tales are on YouTube and the Cbeebies website. • Find rhyming words in stories • Illustrate a front cover for their favourite story • Match lower case letters to letters • Visit the library to take out new books! • Teach your Monster to Read • Phoneme Pop https://www.ictgames.com/phonicsPop/index.html • Foam Phonemes http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/foamPhonemes/index.html • Practise letter formation - http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/skyWriter/index.html • Ask questions – What? Who? Why? When? How? Where? • Keep a diary. Write a sentence about what you’ve enjoyed learning about every day. Draw a picture to illustrate your writing. • Play ‘Would you rather?’ e.g. ‘Would you rather eat slugs or spider’s legs? Why?’ ‘Would you rather have really long arms or really long feet? Why?’ • Can they copy your writing? Words they find around the house/on the fridge/on the TV/on books?

Creative Development

• Blow paint using straws. • Roll marbles over paint. • Make musical instruments from household items and recycling • Listen to different types of music – find out what everyone’s favourite song is. • Collage making (ripping and sticking) • Painting with unconventional tools e.g. forks, string, pasta, potato masher, leaves, twigs, stones, cotton buds, cotton wool etc. • Dance party in the living room! (lots of karaoke and dancing videos on YouTube). • Sing nursery rhymes and songs • Dying dry rice for messy play • Make a card for someone special • Shaving foam – write letters, numbers and name • Act out your favourite story • Thread beads onto string/shoe laces or pipe cleaners through holes in kitchen roll tubes • Pretend to be a character. Can you family guess who you are? ‘I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!’ Who am I? • Copy a repeating pattern of claps, jumps, taps on your knee etc… • Can you sing using a LOUD voice/quiet voice/DEEP voice/high pitched voice? • Hide an object around the house. Give clues to someone to find it by clapping fast when they are close and slow when they are far away (the hot and cold game) • Baking! What happens to the ingredients when you mix them together? How do they change?

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

• Point to body parts / sing heads, shoulders, knees and toes • Talk about ‘Special Times’ – Easter / a family birthday • Talk about ‘Special People’ – who is special in your family? Why? • Talk about ‘Special Places’ – church at Easter etc… Where is your special place? Why? Mine is down the beach with Bruno! • Go on a nature walk or colour hunt in the garden and collect items. Talk about signs of Spring in your garden. • Keep a weather chart each morning – link to days of the week • Taking care of the planet – how to sort the recycling bins at home • Freezing/Melting ice – which substances help melt the ice cubes the quickest? Salt, sugar, flour, vinegar, milk, water? • Add food colouring to ice lollipops and paint with them • Look through old photos and share memories / recognise familiar people • Talk about old and new • Talk about famous people in history • Talk about your locality – what’s in Loughor? How many different buildings can you see? • Follow a pirate’s map around the garden. Find golden coins where X marks the spot! • Look at your house using Google Maps. • Plant flowers/vegetables in the garden and watch them grow! • Go on a bug hunt! What minibeasts live in your garden? • Go for a walk – what can you hear/smell/taste/feel/see?

Physical Development & PSE

• Move in different ways around the garden – run, hop, jump, side step, crawl, bunny hops, foxes, soldier crawl • Balancing - Can you balance on 3 points? (a hand and 2 feet) Can you balance on 2 points? (1 hand and 1 foot) • Practise throwing and catching. • Can you develop your aiming skills? Throw a ball into a box/bucket. Make it harder but moving it further away. • Dressing up clothes – encourage children to use zips, poppers and un-do buttons • Cutting skills • Threading • Picking up small objects e.g. frozen peas • Den building • Parachute games with a bed sheet and ball • Play tennis with balloons • What do you like? What don’t you like? Make a healthy meal for a toy/Tedi Twt • Talk about what makes a good friend • Talk about what is fair • Turn taking games and sharing activities • All about me – make a poster about yourself, your likes and dislikes, hobbies, your family, pets, favourite food, favourite book, favourite TV show • Squiggle dancing • Why is it important to be honest? • Why is it important to be kind? • What is teamwork? • Emotions – Lucy’s Blue Day. • We are all different!
