Proclamation
IN RECOGNITION of “BEN CRENSHAW”
WHEREAS, Ben Daniel Crenshaw was born January 11, 1952, in Austin, Texas; he attended and played golf at Austin High School and the University of Texas before turning professional in 1973; and
WHEREAS, in 1973, Crenshaw became the second player in Tour history to win the first event of his career; he has posted 11 amateur wins and 27 professional wins which includes 2 majors- The Masters in 1984 and 1995; and
WHEREAS, in 1991, Ben Crenshaw was given the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf; and
WHEREAS, “Gentle Ben” was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002, is the 2006 Kappa Alpha Order Sportsman of the Year, and in 2007, he made the cut at The Masters Tournament; and
WHEREAS, Carl Jackson has caddied for Ben at the Masters every year from 1976 to present; and
WHEREAS, Ben Crenshaw is now a noted golf course designer, working in partnership with Bill Coore; and
WHEREAS, Ben is married to the former Julie Ann Forrest and they have three daughters, Katherine Vail, Claire Susan, and Anna Riley; and
WHEREAS, today marks the 10th Annual Mayor’s Masters Reception honoring Ben Crenshaw for his phenomenal contributions to the game of golf; in the words of Ben Crenshaw, “"If we are to preserve the integrity of golf as left to use by our forefathers, it is up to all of us to carry on the true spirit of the game."; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Deke Copenhaver, Mayor of the City of Augusta, do hereby proclaim April 7th, 2008, as “BEN CRENSHAW DAY” in Augusta, Georgia, and urge all citizens to recognize and applaud the efforts of this gentleman as he is legendary in the game of golf.
