TRUST UPDATE #14 Partial School Opening/Closure TRUST UPDATE #14 Partial School Opening/Closure Monday 29 June, 2020 MALTBYLEARNINGTRUST Exceptional Experiences. Successful Lives. MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATE MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Preparing for Life After Coronavirus With one announcement earlier this year life as we know it changed dramatically. Commutes to the office, visits to the local shops, drinks at the pub, celebrating birthdays with friends, holidays, gym classes, family visits, hugs and handshakes were all removed from our list of daily activities. The Coronavirus pandemic is history defining. It is the biggest crisis that the UK and many other countries have faced in peacetime, so the response has been unlike anything most of us have ever experienced. Over recent weeks we have seen signs of the lockdown easing and from the fourth of July the country will take another significant step towards normality. However, we must all recognise that our pre-pandemic life of last minute trips, walk in dinner reservations and large crowds at festivals are a long way off. If there remains a threat of the virus, even if it is much smaller than the first half of 2020, life will continue to be different. As a nation we need to be sensible and patient as we move into a life ‘Post Coronavirus’. We will all be able to broaden our daily activities and meet with family and friends, but it is key that we do this within the confines of the latest guidance. Only if we manage this next transition responsibly will we be able to move closer to normal life without the risk of a second spike and enforced local lockdown. Working together we can move out of this pandemic and enjoy a more positive experience over the coming months . In the last fourteen weeks we have seen people unite for the common good and show concern and support for the more vulnerable and less fortunate in our communities. It would certainly be refreshing if this lasted and people pulled together to deliver a local recovery plan. Keep safe and well. Dave Sutton MALTBYLEARNINGTRUST Exceptional Experiences. Successful Lives. MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATE POST-CORONAVIRUS BUCKET LIST You may recall that in week five of lockdown we highlighted a family who were inspiring their children to dream about post-Coronavirus adventures. During lockdown every time they wished they could do something, go somewhere, treat themselves, see someone they love, visit a new place, invite people to visit them, they wrote it down on a post it note and put it in a jar. When the Coronavirus lockdown ends, the family plan to work their way through their bucket list in the jar and be more grateful than ever for the little and lovely things in their lives. We thought it might be interesting to see what sort of things they had Celebrate captured on the post it notes. birthdays with Whatever you choose to do in the coming weeks please continue to family avoid large crowds and follow the latest government guidance. MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATE WIDER OPENING - MESSAGES OF SUPPORT FROM PARENTS/CARERS As we enter our third week of wider opening, one of the most heartening aspects of the work we have been PREPARED FOR THE doing has been the enthusiasm of the children for returning to school and the feedback we have received from CHALLENGE parents about the measures we have put in place. Pupil safety and wellbeing has been right at the heart of our OF CHANGE approach to this crisis and the positive comments you have sent us make the hard work on the part of all our teams worthwhile. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to share some of these messages we have received with you all. “I know everyone is trying their hardest to make it safe and I can't thank them enough. All the teachers have been amazing over this difficult time - thank you for all your support” “I was a little nervous about sending my child this morning but as soon as I got on to school grounds you could tell they’ve done everything possible to keep the children and staff safe! My child ran straight in with a massive smile on their face and didn’t even look back at me! Honestly, the school should be so proud!” “Thank you for the information with regards to the reopening of the school. I have found it very informative and encouraging that you have taken steps to protect our children and staff at this very worrying time.” “You're all doing amazing, you really are. I can't show my appreciation enough! “I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to staff and governors for all their knowledge, support and information during this unprecedented, unpredictable time. I have felt fully informed by both the school and the Trust.” “The school have kept parents updated of any announcements or changes. I particularly liked that there was a site tour to share with the children in order to allow parents to talk and prepare their children ready for them coming back. Also, I have enjoyed reading the weekly updates from the Trust and finding out about other schools within the Trust.” “My youngest son has gone back into school this week. He has been so excited to be back and has definitely still got that love for learning, which is fantastic to see. As a parent I just want my children to be happy and safe and as a school I feel you are playing a very important part, so thank you!” These are just some of the wonderful comments that we have received this week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your help, your patience and your support throughout this period. It has certainly demonstrated the strength of our communities. MALTBYLEARNINGTRUST Exceptional Experiences. Successful Lives. MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 14 UPDATE SIXTH FORM PROVISION WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE? We recognise how important it is for students to make the transition from from GCSE to Post 16 learning. Our sixth form provision will enable all students to leave armed with academic success and highly developed broader skills which will allow them to secure the best opportunities in higher education, work based training or employment. To ensure that this is achieved, we offer a wide variety of successful academic and vocational courses to enable students to build on the success they have achieved during Key Stage 4. Students study a smaller range of subjects in greater depth, often gaining valuable experience in the workplace. Students develop their personal learning and thinking skills through a variety of enrichment opportunities. The Sixth Form Community is warm and welcoming. Students are supported by a dedicated team of tutors and leaders as well as teaching staff who are passionate about their subjects. QUOTES FROM STUDENTS “The Academy Sixth Form is a forward-looking and ambitious learning community where aspirations are high and excellence is a common goal.” “Being in the Sixth Form makes you feel part of a team. I am pleased to announce the following Senior Student positions which will take immediate effect: HEAD BOY: Alex McEwan | HEAD GIRL: Millie Birch DEPUTY HEAD BOY: Matthew Saxton | DEPUTY HEAD GIRL: Charlotte Sutton SENIOR STUDENTS: Lucy Booth, Annie Cutler, Ben Fielding, Katie Hawksworth, Elli-Jane Little, Lewis Nuttall, Imogen Rooney, Charlotte Spiby, Elizabeth Tonge, Daisy Turton, Zerkif Yazigan MEET THE HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL ALEX MCEWAN (HEAD BOY) MILLIE BIRCH (HEAD GIRL) I made the decision to come to Wath Sixth Form as I I have been a student at Wath since Year 7 and have wanted to build on the positive changes that I had continued into the Sixth Form to study A-level Biology, made in recent years and to make further progress Psychology and BTEC Dance Extended Diploma.

TRUST UPDATE #12 Partial School Opening/Closure Monday 15 June, 2020 MALTBYLEARNINGTRUST Exceptional Experiences. Successful Lives. MALTBY LEARNING TRUST|WEEK 12 UPDATE MESSAGE FROM THE CEO MALTBY LEARNING TRUST: PROVIDING YOUR SCHOOL OF CHOICE In recent updates we have highlighted the importance of strong leadership and effective teaching in shaping a successful school. However, we all recognise that when you are considering a school for your children or even a place of employment you take much more into account in reaching a decision. Many of you will have gone through this process over recent years and undertaken your own due diligence on the schools in the Trust before making your final decision. Hopefully, this was a positive experience and you have seen firsthand how your children and adults can grow and flourish in our schools with the right levels of support and challenge. For students in Y6 and Y11 we recognise that the Covid-19 pandemic will impact on the planned transition activities this year, however we are committed to providing some time in the secondary school later this half term for all our incoming Y7 students and will do everything possible to ensure a successful progression in September. In the Autumn term we will have a number of children moving into their last year of school and thinking about the transition into the secondary school or post 16 education. At the moment it is unclear what September will look like for schools, but we will still find a way to support children and families through the admissions process. Please note that all three secondary schools in the Trust are regularly over subscribed and this year a number of parents living in the catchment areas were unable to secure a place at one of the Trust schools because they either failed to make the school their first choice or return the application form by the specified deadline.

STEM Ambassador Programme Case study: Engineering Extravaganza Overview The Engineering Extravaganza was hosted by the Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre Knowledge Transfer Centre in Rotherham on Thursday 12 March 2020. The event is now in its ninth year and aims to encourage 12 to 14-year-olds to take up a career in engineering. It provides a hands-on introduction to some of the career options open to students in the STEM subjects. The event is led by leading engineering institutions: • The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) • The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) • The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) • The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) • The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) The event is open to North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire schools and this was coordinated by the STEM Ambassador Hub North Midlands South and East Yorkshire managed by Derbyshire Education Business Partnership. Over 90 students and 15 teachers from the following schools were involved: • Clifton Community School • Forge Valley School • Outwood Academy Carlton • Rawmarsh School • Sheffield Springs Academy • Thrybergh Academy • Wath Academy • Winterhill School Page 1 STEM Ambassador Programme Before the event, students were encouraged to consider how many different types of engineers there are. This helped them gain an appreciation of the activities they were attending and the practical activities they were to be involved with. At the event, students moved in small groups through five of a possible six stations (ran by the professional engineering organisations, the venue and with support from STEM Ambassadors) as predetermined by the organisers.
