SERIES SHIFTS TO DENVER FOR GAME 3 The Avalanche's first-round series against the Nashville Predators shifts to Denver for Game 3 tonight at Pepsi Center. Nashville won the first two matchups at Bridgestone Arena. The Avs are in the postseason for the first time since 2014 and for the 14th time since moving to Denver. This is Colorado/Quebec’s 23rd appearance in the playoffs. The Avalanche/Nordiques are in their 46th playoff series in franchise history (25-20 record), their 31st since moving to Denver (19-11 record).

BEEN HERE BEFORE The Avalanche has battled back from an 0-2 deficit to win a series once before, as they rallied from 0-2 down to win four straight from the in the 1999 Western Conference Semifinal. The Avs actually lost the first two games at home that year. Prior to relocating from Quebec, the Nordiques rallied from an 0-2 deficit twice, the 1982 Adams Division Final versus Boston and the 1987 Adams Division Semifinal against Hartford.

FIRST THINGS FIRST The Avalanche scored on their first shot in both Games 1 and 2 of this series, the first team to do so in consecutive playoff contests since Boston in Games 2 and 3 of the 2013 Eastern Conference Final at Pittsburgh.

PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE Duncan Siemens made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut in Game 2 on Saturday, the ninth Avalanche player to make his postseason debut this spring. Eight different players made their debut in Game 1 on Thursday: Sven Andrighetto, J.T. Compher, Samuel Girard, Tyson Jost, Alexander Kerfoot, Mikko Rantanen, David Warsofsky and Nikita Zadorov. Heading into the series, only half (14) of the Avalanche's 28 active players had participated in the playoffs, combining for 175 postseason contests, the fewest of the 16 playoff teams. Colorado's roster now has 213 combined games of postseason experience.

AVS & PREDATORS This marks the first-ever playoff matchup between the Avalanche and Predators. Besides the expansion Golden Knights, that leaves Calgary and Winnipeg as the only Western Conference opponents who have never faced the Avs in the postseason (and Winnipeg has only been in the West since 2011-12). Nashville won all four matchups during the 2017-18 regular season (Colorado was 0-3-1).

CONNECTIONS Gabriel Bourque, Samuel Girard, Vladislav Kamenev, Colin Wilson were all drafted by and played for the Predators. Wilson appeared in 502 regular-season contests and 47 playoff games with Nashville. Bourque skated in 242 regular-season contests and 15 playoff games with the Preds.

AVS, PREDS INVOLVED IN EARLY SEASON TRADE On Nov. 5, the Avalanche acquired defenseman Samuel Girard, forward Vladislav Kamenev and a second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft from the Nashville Predators, as well as forward Shane Bowers, goaltender Andrew Hammond, a first-round selection in the 2018 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in 2019 from the Ottawa Senators. In return, the Avalanche sent forward Matt Duchene to the Senators, and the Predators received Kyle Turris from Ottawa.

AVS ADVANCE TO PLAYOFFS WITH 5-2 WIN IN SEASON FINALE The Avalanche defeated the St. Louis Blues 5-2 in the final game of the regular season to clinch a playoff spot in a winner-take-all matchup in front of 18,087 fans at Pepsi Center. The Avs entered the night trailing St. Louis by one point for the final wild card spot, the first time since 2010 that two teams met in their final game of the season while competing for the lone remaining playoff berth in the conference. The Avs, needing a regulation win to advance, got a late first-period goal from Samuel Girard to take a 1-0 lead, three points from captain Gabriel Landeskog, and 32 saves from Jonathan Bernier to secure their first playoff berth since 2014.

WHAT A TURNAROUND The Avalanche ended the regular season with 95 points, a jump of 47 points from 2016-17 (48). Colorado is the first NHL team to post a 40-plus point improvement from one season to the next since the Pittsburgh Penguins also jumped 47 points from 2005-06 (58) to 2006-07 (105). In fact, Colorado’s turnaround is tied for the fourth-highest year-to-year improvement in NHL history (80+ game seasons only).

BEDNAR JOINS ELITE COMPANY Jared Bednar guided the Avalanche's 47-point turnaround, leading the club to a 43-30-9 record after a 22-56-4 mark a year ago. Bednar joined Harry Sinden as the only coaches in NHL history to record at least 20 more wins in his second season as an NHL head coach than he did in his first (with his first year being a full season). Sinden led the Bruins to 37 victories in 1967-68 after winning 17 games in 1966-67.

HOME SWEET HOME Colorado finished 28-11-2 on home ice, tying their franchise record for most home victories set by the 2000-01 Stanley Cup championship team. The Avs finished the year 18-4-1 in their last 23 games at Pepsi Center, a run that included a franchise record- tying 10-game home win streak, 13 wins in 16 home games for the first time in Colorado history, and the Avalanche’s best-ever 20- game home stretch in a single season (16-3-1).

YOUTH MOVEMENT Colorado ended the 2017-18 campaign as the NHL's youngest team (25.8 average age) and also opened the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs as the youngest club in the postseason (25.8). Although team averages fluctuate daily, the Avs were the youngest squad for much of the regular season at around 26 years of age. The Avalanche dressed 11 different rookies in 2017-18, second in the NHL (Ottawa 12), and the most in Avalanche history. This current group of rookies combined for 419 games, tops in the NHL, and the most ever by an Avalanche rookie class. Colorado’s 122 points (49g/73a) from rookies tied for fourth in the NHL, while the Avs and Devils were the only two teams to feature three rookies with 10-plus goals.

DRESSED TO KILL Colorado finished fourth in the league in penalty killing (83.3%) and first at home (91.7%). The Avs surrendered only 10 power-play goals in 121 short-handed situations on home ice, the fewest ever allowed at home during an 80+ game NHL season. The previous mark was 11 PPG yielded by the 1998-99 . The Avalanche’s 91.7 home PK percentage was the second highest ever behind the 1998-99 Bruins (92.4). Colorado’s fourth overall PK ranking was the club’s best since 2001-02, when they finished second.

POWER PLAY Colorado scored 65 power-play goals—third in the NHL behind Pittsburgh (68) and Tampa (66)—and the most by an Avalanche team since 2006-07 (79). The Avs finished eighth in power-play percentage (22.0%) and were also eighth at home (25.0%). Colorado had a league-high 296 man-advantage opportunities. The power play unit converted at a 31.3% clip (25-for-80) over their last 24 contests, the second-best percentage in the NHL since Feb. 20 (Toronto, 39.3%).

LET’S GO STREAKING Colorado was the first team with a 10-game overall winning streak and a 10-game home winning streak in the same season since the Anaheim Ducks in 2013-14. The Avalanche won 10 consecutive games from Dec. 29–Jan. 22, the second-longest winning streak in franchise history (12 in 1998-99). The 10-game streak tied for the longest run by an NHL team in 2017-18, as Nashville and Columbus also won 10 in a row. The only other team in NHL history to post a double-digit winning streak in one season after finishing last in the league the previous year was the 1926–27 Canadiens, who won 11 straight. The Avalanche tied a franchise record with a 10-game home winning streak from Dec. 29–Feb. 14.
