SEATTLE THUNDERBIRDS (6-1-1-0) PRE-GAME REPORT The Giants will get Captain Tyler Benson back into their lineup tonight. The 17-year-old Edmonton native has yet to play this season after undergoing pre-season surgery to repair a lower body ailment. Benson is projected to be a first round pick in next summer’s NHL Draft after tallying 45 points in 62 games in his rookie season in the WHL last year. The G-Men are coming off a 6-4 loss to the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday. Vancouver still holds the top ranked power play in the league (35.3%). The Thunderbirds haven’t lost in regulation since falling 3-2 to the Giants in their first game of the season back on September 25th at the Rink on Renfrew. As a result, the Seattle club has the league’s highest winning percentage (0.813). New York Islanders first round draft pick Mathew Barzal, who hails from Coquitlam, has been back in the Seattle lineup for five games since returning from NHL training camp. Over that span, Barzal has netted two goals and six assists. 2014/15 SEASON SERIES VS. SEATTLE 2015/16 SEASON SERIES VS. Blues’ O’Reilly Wins Frank J. Selke Trophy St. Louis Blues center Ryan O’Reilly has won the Frank J. Selke Trophy, recognizing “the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. O’Reilly garnered 1,001 voting points, including 48 first-place votes, to edge second-place right wing Mark Stone of the Vegas Golden Knights (881 voting points). Center Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins, a Selke finalist for an unprecedented eighth consecutive year and owner of a record-tying four Selke wins, finished third with 809 points. O’Reilly led the NHL in face-off wins for the second consecutive season (1,086), joining Bergeron (2013-14 through 2016-17) as the only player to post 1,000+ face-off wins in four straight seasons since the statistic was introduced in 1997-98. O’Reilly’s face-off win percentage (56.9%, min. 750) ranked seventh in the NHL. He led the Blues in plus-minus (+22) and topped all St. Louis forwards in average ice time per game (20:46). The 28-year-old native of Clinton, Ont., captured the third individual NHL Trophy of his career, following his Lady Byng Memorial Trophy win in 2014 and recent Conn Smythe Trophy selection as MVP of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He is the second Blues player to capture the Selke, joining Rick Meagher (1990). For a list of past Frank J. Selke Trophy winners, click here. 2018-19 Frank Selke Trophy Voting Pts. Marner Working to Avoid Sophomore Slump After an impressive rookie season, Toronto Maple Leafs center Mitchell Marner has been flying under the radar, which has many worried about what the 2017-2018 season will hold. Marner was selected fourth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft after playing two impressive seasons with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. His junior accolades form a lengthy list that includes finishing second among OHL rookies in scoring, being named the 2016 Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year and helping London win the Memorial Cup. After being drafted, Marner went on to play for Canada in the 2016 World Junior Championship where he tied for the team lead in scoring. With such an impressive résumé, many expected the center to make a big impact on the Leafs. He didn’t disappoint. As one-third of the rookie trio, Marner racked up 61 points (19 G, 42 A) in 77 games played. This number was good enough to tie for third place in scoring on the team and his 42 assists set a new rookie record. What the young leaf lacks in size, he compensates for with his speed, passing ability and playmaking skills. As the 2017-2018 season rolled around, Leafs fans and coaches had high hopes for the trio of Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner. All three were quick to make an impact by scoring a goal in the team’s first regular season game against the Winnipeg Jets. As the season rolled on, Matthews and Nylander continued to make their presence known while Marner slid into the background.

Clustering and Analyzing 5v5 NHL Shot Location Data Twitter: @BrendanKumagai Website: kumihockey.com Brendan Kumagai, McMaster University / University of Toronto Email: [email protected] Results Introduction Key Facts Problem: Heatmap-style visualizations are a common and intuitive way to display patterns How do you read this? 10 clusters in shot location data for individual players or teams. However, analyzing these shot maps The tree diagram at the top becomes exponentially more difficult as the number of players/teams increases. For represents how the players 3 subgroups example of this issue, zoom in on the shot heatmaps on the right, now try imagine were split with Ward's linkage Home plate forwards analyzing these and about 360 more players at once. That will get difficult really quickly. hierarchical clustering, resulting Perimeter forwards in 10 colour coded clusters.
