1 Standard wildflower mixture

This mixture will give you good colour in the first year from the Cornfield Annuals and from then on you will start to see more and more of the other species. Suitable for most soil types. The companion grass is of standard nature to suit most situations. % Wildflower species colour Height (cm) 1.5 Birdsfoot Trefoil Lotus corniculatus Yellow 5-60 5 Black Medick Medicago lupulina Yellow 4.5 Common Knapweed nigra Purple 50-90 5 Corn Chamomile Anthemis arvensis Yellow 60-80 14 Corn Cockle Agrostemma githago Purple 20-60 5 Corn Marigold Chrysanthemum segetum Yellow 15-60 6 Cornflower Centaurea cyanus Blue/purple 40-90 0.5 Cowslip Primula veris Yellow 5-10 2 Field Forget-Me-Not Myosotis arvensis Blue 1.5 Field Poppy Papaver rhoeas Red 20-80 2.5 Foxglove Digitalis purpurea Pink 50-180 2.5 Goatsbeard Tragopogon 2.5 Greater Knapweed Centaurea scabiosa Purple 30-90 1.5 Hoary Plantain Plantago media Pink 10-40 4.5 Lady’s Bedstraw Galium verum Yellow 10-80 4 Meadow Buttercup Ranunculus acris Yellow 30-100 2 Musk Mallow Malva moschata Pink 30-75 3.5 Night-flowering Catchfly Silene noctiflora Pink 2 Ox-eye Daisy Leucanthermum vulgare White 20-100 4.5 Red Campion Silene dioica Red 20-80 2 Ribwort Plantain Plantago lanceolata White/pink 10-40 5.5 Salad Burnet Sanguisorba minor ssp minor Red/purple 20-90 3.5 Self Heal Prunella vulgaris Blue/purple 5-50 3.5 Sorrel Rumex acetosa Red 10-80 3.5 White Campion Silene alba White 30-100 2.5 Wild Carrot Daucus carota White 20-100 3.5 Wild Clary Agrimonia Yellow 30-150 1.5 Yarrow Achillea millefolium White 10-100 % Companion grasses 5 Common Bentgrass Agrostis castellana 22 Crested Dogstail Cynosurus cristatus 26 Sheep’s Fescue Festuca ovina 10 Small Leaved Timothy Phleum bertolonii 7 Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass Poa pratensis 30 Strong Creeping Red Fescue Festca rubra rubra 100% Wildflowers at £88 per kg + VAT 80% Grass 20% Wildflowers £46 per kg + VAT Sowing rate 3-5 grams per m2

2 Old English meadow mixture

This traditional old English mix is based on common and well known species, traditionally multiplied up by late hay production. A good general purpose mix, like most wildflower meadows in the summer should not be grazed by livestock.

This mixture is suited to calcareous soils and all light loamy ground. It also lends itself to banks and steeper sides. Like most wildflower meadows it takes a few years to establish but will provide a really good show of species.

Sandy soils are usually free draining and prone to drying out over the summer months. 11 Cornfield annuals

These fast growing brightly coloured annuals provide extensive cover all summer long and will look a picture in the first two years. Because this mix is made up from annuals, they rely on dropping their seed for growth in the following year. After the first year, it is a good idea to lightly cultivate the land to promote early new spring growth. The cornfield annual mix generally lasts one to three years depending on management.

Blaze is a blend of extremely colourful annual flowers perfect for brightening up areas of the farm, estate or large garden. With their striking mass of flower heads they attract many different insects and invertebrates. Any prospective land owner should have an area where this can grow and it never fails to impress! Sown in early spring, these colourful flowers will start producing at the end of June and flower through to October. Although most of the species are annuals this mix could last up to three years depending on how they are looked after. 14 Brush harvested seed and service

Brush harvesting of wildflower seed is a responsible and sustainable way of harvesting wildflower meadows and an excellent way of replicating good mixtures. We brush harvest local county seed from native wildflower downland and meadows which is available for sale. The seed we harvest is certified by Natural England and can be used under most environmental stewardship schemes or where local and native providence is important. Because of the nature of the wildflower meadows, the seed which we take off can be all different sizes and therefore becomes a mixture very difficult to regulate and clean. The brush harvested seed will contain small grass stems so therefore drilling the seed is not possible and is best mixed with sand and broadcast. We also offer our brush harvesting service and would be happy to quote for local work which can include harvesting, cleaning and drying. 18 Sowing and management instructions for wildflowers

Site and soil preparation Try to avoid high fertility soil. Usual sowing rate approx: 3-7 grams per m2. One of the most important things to remember is to start with a -free seed bed to reduce the weeds from competing with the wild flowers. Cultivate the ground and, if possible, leave until you get a really good show of weed growth. Then spray off with Glyphosate following the manufacturer’s instructions. In an ideal situation you should do this twice. 1 Cultivate and spray off any weeds. 2 Mix the seed well in the bag/box before planting. If you have problems drilling or broadcasting by hand you can mix with a fine dry sand to give some weight to the seed. 3 Broadcast or drill the seed into a clean weed-free seedbed. 4 Roll the ground before (preferably ring roll) then flat roll after planting.

Important maintenance Once you have sown the mixture, it is very important to manage the growth for the first year. This includes cutting and weeding if possible. If sowing in the autumn, cut the sward when the grass gets established and keep it down to help the flower seeds to germinate. If sowing in the spring, again keep the grass low for the first growing season. Whenever you cut, it is vital to remove all the material.

After establishment maintenance Very easy: in the spring, cut to 10cm and remove the cuttings. Cut again after flowering in the autumn. Job done!
