From the desk of the Principal/Officer-in-Charge Education is essential and a right to all. Situated In a remote area, Jhargram Raj College takes the challenge to impart education to the students coming from families where higher education will ensure financial, social and cultural empowerments. Quality teachers and good infrastructure of the college will make these possible. We are ready to accept the challenge with all sincerity. Our mission will be fulfilled if we collectively make an effort to turn this institution into a Centre for Potential Excellence. Apart from academic activities, the institution encourages many co-curricular programmes enabling the students to shine in multiple fields. Students are the strength of any academic institution. About the College Jhargram Raj College is situated at the town of Jhargram, the District Head Quarters of the newly created District of Jhargram. The area is a place of natural beauty. The college is set in a huge campus of 313 acres amid the serene and verdant forests of primordial trees such as Mahua, Sal, Piasal etc. It has registered a spectacular growth over the years since its inception. In 1949, the young of Jhargram, Raja Sir Narasingha Malla Ugal Sanda Deb, OBE, KBE, at the request of Pramathanath Banerjee, the then Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, made a bequest of Rupees One Lakh in cash and 450 bighas of land for the first agricultural college of at Jhargram. The Khaira Professor of Agriculture Dr Pabitra Kumar Sen who was the first principal of the college, helped with the Khaira Endowment Fund. The building was raised in 1951 and Jhargram Agricultural College was promoted to the degree standard with a two-years’ B.Sc. course. However, Calcutta University could not meet the financial requirements for long and in 1953 the college was handed over to the Government of West Bengal with the teaching of Agriculture retained only up to the I.Sc. standard and teaching of B.Sc. in Agriculture was taken over by the Government Agricultural College at Tollygunge, Calcutta. Founded in 1949 as Jhargram Agricultural College, Jhargram Raj College grew into a hallowed centre of higher learning, offering to the undergraduate students a whole array of subjects from three disciplines of Arts, Commerce and Science. Initially affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the college came under affiliation of in 1985. On 8th May, 1999, the college celebrated the completion of 50 years of its glorious existence. In 2005, the college introduced its first Postgraduate course in Chemistry. Gradually, Postgraduate courses in Zoology and Bengali also came into being from 2006 and 2008, respectively. Different minor and major research projects funded by different government agencies are carried out by the faculty members of various departments of the college. The faculties regularly participate in seminars, workshops etc. and their research papers are regularly published in reputed journals and periodicals. These activities lead to involve and motivate the students, especially those who are pursuing postgraduate courses in this college, to a research career. In its sixty-eight years of existence, the college has witnessed the changes with time and it has been prepared accordingly to cope with the changes and offer better education to its students. Many of the alumni of the college are at the top positions of various government and non-government organisations. Many are reputed academicians. Many have made names in the field of art, music, literature etc. While the college takes pride in them, it busies itself with the duty of grooming the present students and looks forward to a brighter future for the coming generations.

Mission & Vision

The college since its inception has been serving the districts of Medinipur and the greater portions of (comprising of the districts of and ). Trees, shrubs and bushes and, hills and hillocks amidst a red earth and, the tribes living here are what distinguish this area from other parts of the state. Jhargram Raj College pays homage to Henry Vivian Louis Derozio as well as to Pandit Raghunath Murmu. Both strived for quest of knowledge and both inspired students to ask questions and look for the truth. Jhargram Raj College welcomes ideas, inventions and, innovations.

Jhargram Raj College being a government college offering quality education programmes at UG as well as a few PG levels takes a special place in the area. Many students of this college come from extremely poor families and under-privileged sections of the society and, are often the first-generation learners. Their requirements are quite different from that of the students belonging to middle class and comparatively well-to-do families. To achieve what is required of it, Jhargram Raj College functions accordingly to impart good and quality education in particular and contribute towards social welfare in general.

The college consistently works towards:

• Spreading education and awareness. • Making youths socially responsible and able to undertake the social responsibilities that are demanded of a good citizen. • Grooming students as sensitive men and women. • Providing a process of learning via activities that cross-links the society with education. • Imparting values that lead to accountability for the society at large. • Inculcating a sense of understanding for self as well as for others.

Facilities available at the College:

➢ Library:The college has got a library rich in books and journals. The students are issued the library cards which enable them to borrow books. The cards are non-transferable and must be returned at the end of the session. A two-storeyed library extension building is available to accommodate all the students for reading. The students are required to contact the Librarian or follow notice board for library related notifications. Digital cataloguing is in progress. ➢ Hostel Accommodation: The college provides separate hostel accommodation (two boys’ hostel and one girls’ hostel) to boy and girl students. Application for hostel accommodation has to be made in the prescribed form to be obtained from the hostel office. ➢ Sports and Games: The college holds regular sporting events and students do actively participate in athletics, badminton, volleyball, cricket and football tournaments held at university level every year. The college has its own playground, volleyball, badminton and basketball courts. The college also boasts of a State-of-the Art modern gym. ➢ N.S.S.: The college has four active National Service Scheme (N.S.S.) units which regularly undertake various social works like cleanliness drive, health awareness campaigns, tree plantation and blood donation programmes, special camps, social work at adopted villages etc. all around the year. ➢ Canteen: The college offers canteen facility to students and staff. ➢ Scholarship/ Free Studentship: As per existing Government rules, merit-based scholarships from Govt. of West Bengal and Govt. of are allotted among meritorious, poor, Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste students of the college. Apart from that, initiatives would be undertaken to grant free and half-free studentship to needy and meritorious students subject to approval of the same from the Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal. ➢ Co-curricular Activities: Co-curricular activities like annual sports, cultural programmes, wall magazine, quiz, debate, students’ seminar etc. are organised by different departments as well as by the Students’ Union on a regular basis.

ANTI-RAGGING POLICY 1. Our institution has zero tolerance for harassment or ragging of the students in any form. 2. It is mandatory for all the students to give declaration at the time of admission that he/she will neither tolerate nor participate in any kind of ragging activities. 3. Following types of activities are considered as ragging ▪ Physical Abuse ▪ Verbal Abuse ▪ Forced Activity ▪ Lifestyle Restrictions ▪ Conversational Mind-games. ▪ Or any kind of harassment on part of the students. 4. According to the direction of the Supreme Court if any instance of ragging is brought to the notice of the administration or the faculty, it is legally binding on us to report the matter to the local police. 5. Seniors are given directives so that any interaction on their part, with the freshers might remain friendly and welcoming in nature. Discipline

• Loitering and lounging on the corridor are prohibited. • Admission to the college binds a student to abide by the College rules and all the directives that may be issued from time to time by the college authorities. • Students absent from class lectures for more than three consecutive days have to produce a letter by parent or guardian (whose signature appears on application form during admission) explaining the cause of absence. • A formal letter accompanied by a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner is necessary in case of sickness for over a week. All leave applications addressed to the Principal / Officer-in-Charge (forwarded through respective Heads of the Departments in case of Honours students) should be deposited at the students’ section of the College. Students’ attendance is regularly monitored by the College and displayed on occasions in the notice board for necessary remedial measures by the students concerned. • The name of a student who has been absent for 15 consecutive working days of the College in any subject will be struck off from the register without intimation.

General Information:

• A student is advised to go through the notice board regularly. • Students are required to address their teachers and all other members of the teaching and non- teaching staff with due respect and politeness and are expected to behave properly. • Any kind of disobedience or objectionable behaviour may result in penal action leading even to expulsion from the college. • Strict action may be taken if college property including library books is wilfully damaged or destroyed. • Students should not enter the Principal’s chamber without permission. However they can meet the college officials at 1.30 pm and onwards from Monday to Friday. • Routine needs of the students are met usually by the staff in the students section of the office. • Application to be forwarded by the Principal / Officer-in Charge must be submitted in duplicate to the College. • Applications to be forwarded within a certain date must be submitted at least three clear working days ahead of that date. • Prayer for character-certificate or any other document by any current or ex-student is also to be made at least three clear working days ahead of the date by which it is required. Such application should clearly state the name, academic session, year, subject and roll no. of the candidate. • All such applications should be submitted to the College office, and in urgent case, to the Principal / Officer-in Charge or the Heads of the Departments concerned directly. • Any change in address/ telephone number/ guardian-status should be immediately brought to the notice of the College office for necessary change in the records. • No one, other than parents / guardian whose signature appears in the application form during admission is allowed to sign in any other document or represent them on their behalf in any case.

Courses Offered: The college offers the following courses at the undergraduate level: ➢ B.A. (Honours) in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sanskrit. ➢ B.Sc. (Honours) in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Physiology and Zoology. ➢ B.Com (Honours) in Accounting and Finance (Morning Section). ➢ B.A. (General) in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Physical Education Political Science and Sanskrit. ➢ B.Sc. General (Bio) in Botany, Physiology and Zoology. ➢ B.Sc. General (Phy.) in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Physics. ➢ B.Com (General) -Morning Section.
