Your guide to the wonderful world of Thoroughbred horses RACING IN ZIMBABWE is not all about betting Get a free eBook template, like the one used to create this book from http://theWebalyst.com Your Your guide to the world of racing and Thoroughbred horses Have you noticed.... that people who love racehorses talk about them a lot? If you haven't fallen for these brave and beautiful athletes, yet, you probably wonder why racing fans are so obsessed. This e-book aims to explain that, and introduce you to a world where you will always have something to talk and think about. Horses come in all shapes and sizes and almost everyone who comes in close contact with them finds they are noble and kind. However we are primarily interested in thoroughbred racehorses – a breed with a proud history, developed by careful breeding over hundreds of years. Racehorses combine speed with stamina, and are bred by putting the best to the best. The racing industry has grown, world-wide, based on this concept. It provides entertainment and employment for millions of people. 2 Your Your guide to the world of racing and Thoroughbred horses In this guide we cover the history of racing, finding your way around the racecourse, what goes on behind the scenes, the people involved, how to bet, and why you don't need to bet because studying form and following your favourite racehorses is actually the best mind game of all. A racecourse needs local support... People who live in Harare have every reason to be proud of their racecourse because it is one of the best in Southern Africa – an asset to be appreciated and enjoyed.

  • 2017 Summerhill Stud Sale of Mares and Weanlings
“As One Door Closes, Another One Opens…” There is never a good time to do this, more so as it involves the dispersal of the families that have brought international recognition to Summerhill. When our former stud manager John Slade, was assisting with our mating plans last July, he was charmed by the layered evolution of our broodmares through generations of the leading stallions Northern Guest, Home Guard, Liloy, Rambo Dancer, National Emblem, Fard, Kahal and Muhtafal, all of them “top ten” luminaries, several of them national champions in one category or another. While this is an emotional time for all of us, it’s an opportune one for our colleagues. Our good friend Graham Beck, laid the foundations for his stellar successes at Highlands and Maine Chance through his legendary “raids” on their stock, as well as those of the Noreen, Scott Bros. and Hartford studs. For our own part, the partnerships we’d assembled in 1987 were dispersed on their maturity in 1998, and we were left with just 26 mares on the farm; seven years later, through our re- investment in those families, we’d won the first of ten national premierships. Famously, the dams of Jet Master, Royal Chalice, Angus and Pierre Jourdan, among many others, were acquired right here, as was Varsfontein’s “Blue Hen”, Secret Pact. While Summerhill’s successes owe much to the stallions that’ve decorated our barn over the decades, it’s arguable that we’ve never been better served than in the outstanding young sprinter-milers currently doing duty here, Act Of War, Capetown Noir, Willow Magic and Linngari; they comprise the bulk of the covering sires in the catalogue.

It’s probably a many-layered answer: 123 Years of Tradition One thing the world’s great events share is history - an unbroken heritage stretching back through time. The Vodacom Durban July spans three centuries, first run in 1897, and every year since. Big money at Stake That first running in 1897 was contested for a prize of 500 sovereigns. Big then. Big now. For the past three years, the big race has beeen contested for a stake of R4.25 million, but reduced to R1.5 million for 2020 due to the impact of the current coronavirus pandemic.

TEAM VALOR INTERNATIONAL HAS WON 12 RACES IN THE MONTH OF JUNE, STABLE IS IN THE MIDST OF ITS HOTTEST WINNING STREAK IN ITS HISTORY And the wins just keep on coming for Team Valor International, which has been on the hottest winning streak in stable history. “Everybody’s got the right to win, but I fear we are abusing the privilege,” laughed Barry Irwin, sole proprietor of the international stable that through yesterday had gained 12 of its 31 wins this season in the month of June. “It is unbelievable and it is fun. It is always nice when things worth out. This business is a lot like farming. You plant your seeds. You hope like hell the weather and the bugs don’t compromise your crop and you sit back and keep your fingers, toes and eyes crossed, hoping things will come right. Well, during the past 20 days or so, things have definitely blossomed for us.” This week, Team Valor picked up 5 more wins. • Daveron, bought more than a year and a half ago as a gangly yearling filly in Germany, broke her maiden first time out like an Oaks candidate this week in The Rhineland. • Collegiate, an unlikely debut maiden winner when bought at Saratoga last summer when she was already well over 16 hands tall, simply freaked yesterday at Belmont like a Breeders’ Cup filly. • Elegant Aspen closed with a rush on a wet course driving through a hard rain to get up late and score an allowance win over 9 furlongs in South Africa for The Snaiths.
