Throughout history, women in labor have been supported by other women. Midwives learned as apprentices, gaining skills and knowledge from older women. Eventually, formalized training for midwives was developed in Europe, but no professional training existed in the United States until 1939. In 1923 Mary Breckinridge organized the Frontier Nursing Service in Wendover, Kentucky, to meet the health needs of rural women and children. Breckinridge had become acquainted with nurse-midwives in France and Great Britain during World War I and later attended classes in London. She brought trained midwives from England, who made prenatal home visits on foot or horse. In 1939 the Frontier Nursing Service started the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, which still exists today. It is estimated that a quarter of all certified American nurse-midwives graduated from the Frontier School. In 1989 the school began offering a national distance-learning program to make it easier for nurses in small towns and rural areas to become nurse-midwives.

The man who came for me had no mule, and, as my patient had sent word for me to hurry, I left him behind with instructions to follow my trail. It is one of our few rules that no nurse rides alone at night, but I knew the man would never be far behind and we nurses are safe. Our uniform allows us to go anywhere in the mountains, and it is only fear of accident which prevents our riding alone at night.

    Training the Next Generation of Rural Health Care Providers By Robin Roenker 4 The Bridge KENTUCKY’S CONNECTION TO RURAL HEALTH ISSUES Members of the 2019 cohort of Frontier Nursing University’s Courier Program relax at the Bluegrass Festival in Hyden, Kentucky. The service-learning experience brought nine participants — eight from the U.S. and one from Canada — to rural Kentucky this past summer to see what it’s like to provide medical care to an underserved population. Anna Carey left her home near Rochester, New York, in 2003 to take part in Frontier Nursing University’s Courier Program — a rural public health learning experience that brings a small group of volunteers to Eastern Kentucky annually — not realizing the experience would be literally life changing. “I definitely didn’t plan on staying originally,” said Carey, who ended up relocating permanently to Hyden, in Leslie County, following her time as a Courier. “But I found that there were a lot of opportunities to do things in public health and health education in the area.” Carey — whose active and varied community service work over the past 16 years in Leslie County has helped place nurses and preventative health education programs in schools, established reading tutoring programs for students, facilitated mobile dental clinics, Courier Program and provided affordable pet spay and neuter services to residents, among other initiatives — looks back on her summer service as a Courier as the launching off point to her public health career. “The Courier Program is just a great
