www.frontier.edu 25 ACADEMIC APPAREL GOWNS The gown for the master’s degree – which is untrimmed – has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the sleeve base hanging down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front has an arc cutaway. The gown for the doctorate degree has bell-shaped sleeves. The material may vary from light to heavy, and black is recommended. The gown is faced down the front with blue velvet; three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. Facings and crossbars may be velvet of the color distinctive to the discipline, agreeing in color with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the particular doctoral degree. HOODS In all cases, the hood is black and must be the same material as that of the gown. Hoods are to be lined with the official color or colors of the university conferring the degree. The colors for Frontier Nursing University are blue and white. The length of the hood for the master’s degree is three and one-half feet; for the doctor’s degree, four feet. Only doctoral hoods shall have panels at the sides. The binding or edging of the hood is to be velvet or velveteen, three inches and five inches wide for the master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively; the color should be indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains. The color associated with Nursing – the discipline for this university – is apricot. In the case of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree, the dark blue color is used to represent the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship in any field that is attested to by the awarding of this degree and is not intended to represent the field of philosophy. CAPS In all cases, the cap is black and to be worn indoors and out – are made of cotton poplin, broadcloth, rayon or silk to match the gown; velvet is appropriate for doctoral degrees only. Mortarboards are generally recommended. A long tassel is to be fastened to the midpoint of the top of the cap only. The tassel should be black or the color appropriate to the subject, with the exception of the doctor’s cap that may have a tassel of gold. The tassel is worn on the right until the degree is conferred. It is then moved to the left front quarter. THE UNIVERSITY MACE Frontier Nursing University’s ceremonial procession is led by the Dean of Nursing carrying the University Mace. The Mace was hand carved from a walnut tree located on the property at Wendover, Ky near the Big House, which was the home of founder Mary Breckinridge. The Mace symbolizes the history of the University. It is 34 inches in length with a rounded top and the FNU logo on all four-sides. There is a brass plate near the bottom with the inscription “The thing that we most want-more than all plans-is to better the work we do now in the years to come”-Mary Breckinridge. PINNING CEREMONY The pinning ceremony is a time-honored tradition that symbolizes successful completion of the courses and clinical experiences required for taking the licensure exam. The pin identifies the nursing school from which the student graduated and is a symbol of the practice of nursing and their educational preparation. A faculty member presents the pin to a newly graduated nursing student as a symbolic welcome into the profession. CIRCLE-UP The Circle-Up is a time of reflection, an honored tradition that is part of the on campus experience at Frontier Nursing University. 26 Frontier Nursing University MARY BRECKINRIDGE A true American Hero, Mary Breckinridge was a driving force behind improving rural healthcare in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, as well as the development of nurse-midwives in our country. When Mary Breckinridge established the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) in Eastern Kentucky, she introduced the first nurse-midwives to the United States. Riding horses up mountains, through fog, flood, or snow, FNS nurses brought modern healthcare to one of the poorest and most inaccessible areas in the country. The Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery was started in 1939 by the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) as a part of its demonstration project in the care of the mother and child in rural areas of Kentucky. Frontier Nursing University has been in continuous operation since that time and has continued to change and adapt through the years. Frontier Nursing University (FNU) is a private, non-profit, non-residential graduate school of nursing offering community-based, distance-education programs. FNU offers a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with four tracks as options: nurse-midwife, family nurse practitioner, psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, or women’s healthcare nurse practitioner. Our mission is to provide accessible nurse-midwifery and nurse practitioner education to prepare competent, entrepreneurial, ethical, and compassionate leaders in primary care to serve all individuals with an emphasis on women and families in diverse, rural, and underserved populations. FNU fulfills this mission by operating accredited advanced practice nursing and midwifery programs, using a distance- education model, which allows nurses from across the nation and the globe to achieve their higher education dreams without leaving their work or their home communities. The primary tenet is health- care professionals who are educated in their own communities will remain to serve their community. Today over 6,000 Frontier graduates are providing primary healthcare to rural and underserved families in every state in the United as well as many foreign countries.

www.frontier.edu 27 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS Dr. Joycelyn Elders

Dr. Elders became the 15th Surgeon General of the United States when she was appointed to that post by President Clinton in 1993. She also was the first African American, and only the second woman to serve as the U.S. Surgeon General. Born in 1933 in the rural farming community of Schaal, Ark., Elders was the eldest of eight children. She graduated from Philander Smith College in Little Rock, then joined the Army and trained in physical therapy at the Brook Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In 1956, she enrolled at the University of Arkansas Medical School on the G.I. Bill. She married Oliver Elders in 1960. After studying pediatrics at the University of Minnesota, she returned to Little Rock in 1961 to do her residency. Over the next 20 years, she maintained a successful office practice while also researching pediatric endocrinology and becoming an expert in growth problems and juvenile diabetes. This research led her to realize that diabetic women face a health risk if they become pregnant too young. In 1987, then-Governor Bill Clinton named Elders director of the Arkansas Department of Health. Under her direction, 19 Arkansas schools opened health clinics. In 1989 the Arkansas State Legislature ordered the creation of a kindergarten-through-twelfth-

28 Frontier Nursing University grade curriculum including not only sex education but also instruction in hygiene, substance-abuse prevention, self-esteem, and equal sexual responsibility among both males and females. After serving as the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Elders returned to the University of Arkansas in 1995 as a faculty researcher and professor of pediatric endocrinology at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. In 1996 she wrote her autobiography, Joycelyn Elders, M.D.: From Sharecropper’s Daughter to Surgeon General of the United States of America. Now retired from practice, she is a professor emeritus at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and remains active in public health education. “It is a tremendous honor to have Dr. Elders join us as the keynote speaker for our 2019 commencement ceremony,” said FNU President Dr. Susan Stone. “Dr. Elders’ amazing journey and ground-breaking achievements inspire us all. We are so thankful and proud that she is sharing her story with our graduates and their families.” FNU’s commencement ceremony honors the nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners who have completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, Master in Science of Nursing degree, or Post-Graduate Certificate. In 2018, more than 1,600 people attended FNU’s commencement ceremony to celebrate the graduation of more than 800 nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners.

We also proudly recognize Dr. Joycelyn Elders as our 2019 recipient of the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Congratulations, Dr. Elders!

It’s in everyone of us to be wise, Find your heart open up both your eyes, We can all know everything without ever knowing why, It’s in everyone of us by and by .. It’s in everyone of us I just remembered it’s like I been sleeping for years, I’m not awake as I can be but my seeing is better, I can see .. through the tears, I’ve been realizing that, I bought this ticket and watching only half of the show, There is scenery and lights and a cast of thousands, Who all know, what I know, And it’s good that it’s so .. It’s in everyone of us to be wise Find your heart open up both your eyes, We can all know everything without ever knowing why, It’s in everyone of us by and by, It’s in everyone of us by and by.
