Alyssa Eisner Henkin HER OWN TWO FEET offers a story of hope and resilience in the face of hardship for a Rwandan girl.

At a very young age, Rebeka Uwitonze taught herself to walk on the tops of her feet. But she knew that as she grew older, her twisted feet wouldn’t be able to hold her weight and she would go back to living life on the red-dirt ground of Rwanda.

In 2012, when Rebeka was nine years old, she left Rwanda and came to Texas to undergo life-altering surgery on her club feet. The surgery ensured that she could walk for the rest of her life. Meredith Davis, her husband, Clay, and their three kids hosted Rebeka for nearly a year as she endured over forty hospital visits for casting, surgery, and physical therapy.

Clay Davis met Rebeka and her family while leading a business training seminar in Rwanda. When Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin, Texas agreed to treat her, the Davis family was asked if Rebeka could live with them, and the answer was an emphatic “yes.” It was in many ways a dream come true for the Uwitonze family to have their daughter treated at one of the best hospitals in the world. But it was also a huge culture shock for Rebeka to live with strangers and experience everything from indoor plumbing to trick-or-treating to a trampoline (like a giant fishing net, stretched tight). Rwawnda and her own family were all she’d ever known. In America, she would learn to read, learn to suffer and persevere through painful surgeries, and learn how to walk again on her own two feet.

16 POLLY FARQUHAR Holiday House February 4, 2020 ITCH Edited Manuscript Available A middle grade debut for Trident: UK & Translation readers who loved Lynda Mullaly Hunt's Fish in a Alyssa Eisner Henkin Tree and Jack Cheng's See You in the Cosmos

Told with piercing humor and quirky insight into the inner workings of sixth grade, this is the story of Itch, aka Isaac Fitch, and the lengths a kid will go to fit in in middle school.

After a tornado tears the cafeteria roof off like a band-aid, Isaac’s sixth-grade year is off to a rough start—particularly because he can’t do fractions, and his mother has left for a two-month trip to China. Plus, Isaac is still getting used to a new school where everyone calls him Itch because he has idiopathic angioedema. That’s a thing that makes him want to scratch all over and that he doesn’t even know how to control.

At least he has his job at the pheasant farm, and the guys at school and Sydney to hang out with when he’s not working. But when trading school lunches goes wrong and Sydney gets rushed away in an ambulance, Isaac knows it’s his fault. When you suddenly don’t have any friends, would you do anything— even things that are wrong—to get them back?

The novel offers an insightful and relatable look at just how hard it can be to fit in in sixth grade, and at the ultimate cost of being anything but true to ourselves.

Girls ages 6-9 will be empowered to celebrate their intrinsic worth, to take charge of their own narrative, and to be curious, brave, and independent. Each spread features a statement that serves as both affirmation and prompt so that a girl can write and draw about her own experience. For example, one spread reads, “I am Brave: I keep moving forward even when I am afraid,” and provides space for a girl to write about a time when she decided to be brave. The #metoo and the modern women’s movements have mobilized a wave of caregivers eager to build up the young girls in their lives by telling them their stories matter and helping them to process their emotions in a positive, healthy way. Melissa’s early success is a testament to the need for books like hers, and her new book answers this call.

Melissa Foley is the creator of the bestselling I AM CONFIDENT, BRAVE, AND BEAUTIFUL: A COLORING BOOK FOR GIRLS, which, has sold over 450,000 copies on Amazon and is routinely the top of its categories and in the top 50 books overall on Amazon.com. Target recently approached Melissa and they plan to make the coloring book available across the US in their stores early 2021. Before founding Hopscotch Girls, Melissa spent 10+ years working for social change by working with activists and students to help them utilize media in order to realize their full potential as changemakers. 46 FREDERICK JOSEPH Candlewick Press December 1, 2020 THE BLACK FRIEND:  SIX-FIGURE PRE-EMPT On Being a Better White Person Writing from the perspective of a Edited Manuscript Available friend, Frederick Joseph offers candid reflections on his own experiences Trident: Translation with racism and conversations with prominent artists and activists about Alexander Slater theirs, creating an essential read for white people who are committed anti- racists and those newly come to the cause of racial justice, as well as people of color who long to see their experiences validated.

“We don’t see color.” “I didn’t know Black people liked Star Wars!” “What hood are you from?” For Frederick Joseph, life as a transfer student in a largely white high school was full of wince-worthy moments that he often simply let go. As he grew older, however, he saw these as missed opportunities not only to stand up for himself, but to spread awareness to those white people who didn’t see the negative impact they were having.

Speaking directly to the reader, THE BLACK FRIEND calls up race-related anecdotes from the author’s past, weaving in his thoughts on why they were hurtful and how he might handle things differently now. Each chapter features the voice of at least one artist or activist, including Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give; April Reign, creator of #OscarsSoWhite; Jemele Hill, sports journalist and podcast host; and eleven others. Touching on everything from cultural appropriation to power dynamics, “reverse racism” to white privilege, microaggressions to the tragic results of overt racism, this book serves as conversation starter, tool kit, and invaluable window into the life of a former “token Black kid” who now presents himself as the friend many readers need. Backmatter includes an encyclopedia of racism, providing details on relevant historical events, terminology, and more. Praise for THE BLACK FRIEND

“The Black Friend is THE book everyone needs to read right now. Frederick Joseph has written an essential window into the movement toward anti-racism. Read it, absorb it, and be changed because of it.” —Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give

“Toward the end of THE BLACK FRIEND, Frederick Joseph writes that his book is ‘a gift, not an obligation.’ I respectfully disagree. This book should be an obligation for white people, especially white parents, because we must raise anti-racist kids who will never be perpetrators of or bystanders to white supremacy and who will never mistake tolerance or appropriation for respect. Don’t skip the painful parts—read every word.” —Chelsea Clinton, author, advocate, and vice chair of the Clinton Foundation

“With clear, powerful prose and a gentle dose of humor, THE BLACK FRIEND is essential reading for anyone wishing to be part of a better world. I absolutely loved this book.” —Julie Klam, New York Times best-selling author

THE MOTH GIRL is a heart-wrenching and imaginative YA debut novel which puts a magic realism twist on coming of age with a chronic illness.

Symptoms of lepidopsy include floating in the air, fluttering of the hands, and being drawn to sources of light— and 15-year-old Anna has a classic case. Before her diagnosis, Anna was an avid runner on the cross-country team and spent her free time listening to obscure music and hanging out with her friends. Now, she must navigate the strange world of doctors and hospitals as she tries to regain her health.

Anna doesn't want to give up the life she had before, so she pretends that everything is fine. But as her floating episodes grow more dangerous, and as the disease and its treatments transform her, it grows harder to pretend. All she wants is to be normal, but her life, body, and relationships are changing in irrevocable ways—and if she doesn't get her lepidopsy under control, she could float away entirely.

THE MOTH GIRL is a tender and raw examination of the complexities of friendship, the difficulties of transformation, and the confusion, isolation, and anxieties of living with a rare condition that will appeal to readers of Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything, Wendelin Van Draanen’s The Running Dream, Leslye Walton’s The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender, and the works of A.S. King

Heather Kamins grew up in New York and Massachusetts, and has an MFA in creative writing (fiction) from Mills College in Oakland, CA. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in Guernica, Betwixt, Luna Station Quarterly, and elsewhere, and her poetry chapbook, Blueshifting, was published by Upper Rubber Boot Books. AVOIDING TEMPTATION (#3) Fast forward to my senior year of college, and the THE SET UP (#4) new adjunct professor is the one and only Mrs. December 2019 Robinson. She's eight years older than me and smoking hot—and, did I mention she's divorced? Erica Silverman She looks at me like I'm trouble, and I'm only too happy to deliver on that promise.

AVOIDING TEMPTATION I hit on her first, realized she was Finn's sister second, and got a bloody nose third— compliments of Finn after he watched me nearly score with the new underclassman. After all, I did have a reputation on campus. Not only did I earn the attention of the worst sort of girl for me—my best friend's only sibling—but now she's out to seduce me. Me! One of the most famous Pleasure Ponies of them all! I can't shower — she follows me to the bathroom. I can't sleep—lucky me, she lives in the same dorm. And I can't focus on anything except her taunting eyes every single time something goes her way. I want her, but I dont want her to know I want her. Something's gotta give, and I have an inkling I should probably start writing my eulogy now because that something is probably going to be me.

THE SET UP The first day, when she was sitting by herself, I felt sorry for her. After all, it couldn't be easy wrangling all the testosterone at Wingmen Inc. as one of the only female office managers. The second day she literally counted her carrots during break—she had seven by the way, right along with seven sips of her drink in between taking seven tiny little bites of the first carrot. Now I'm not one to brag, but puzzles fascinate me, and this woman screamed puzzle. I'd like to think I took pity on her that day when, in fact, she was the one who took pity on me and asked if I needed a friend. Now, my bosses need someone to test the new Wingman Inc. app, and since I was the only single guy on the floor, I was nominated, right along with the only single woman—her. But she's decided she wants nothing to do with me, which makes beta testing a bitch. I only have thirty days to win her over and prove myself to my bosses. One thing's for certain: I'm going to have to buy a hell of a lot of carrots.
