XII Sleeping, turning in turn like planets rotating in their midnight meadow: a touch is enough to let us know we’re not alone in the universe, even in sleep: the dream-ghosts of two worlds walking their ghost-towns, almost address each other. I’ve wakened to your muttered words spoken light - or dark - years away, as if my own voice had spoken. But we have different voices, even in sleep, and our bodies, so alike, are yet so different and the past echoing through our bloodstreams is freighted with different language, different meanings— though in any chronicle of the world we share it could be written with new meaning we were two lovers of one gender, we were two women of one generation. Adrienne Rich, Twenty-One Love Poems (1978). AGRADECIMIENTOS. A Guadalajara, mi amor. ¡Venga, familia! Podemos cruzar todos los ríos. Mali, ponte los zapatos. i RESUMEN. Data were collected over a period of two weeks, wherein screen-captures were taken and saved twice a day at 10:00 am and pm.

(ie. how long have you been a fan?) 2) Why Lara Croft? What do you like/admire about her? What do you think drew you to her? 3) Can you describe Lara Croft's impact on your sexuality? (If not and/or you don't feel she's been an influence, that's fine too). 4) Do you have a Lara preference - Classic or Reboot? Name: Joshua B. Country: USA Age: 22 How you identify: Cisgender gay man --- 1) How and when did you come to the fandom? (ie. how long have you been a fan?) I've only been a fan for about a year! I got into the series in 2014 with Tomb Raider (2013). I later branched out and explored the classic series by Core Design and disliked them, but I was only really inspired/convinced to return to the Core games when my ex-boyfriend brought up a new viewpoint: people play Tomb Raider for puzzles, not for plot. And so I went back and I was hooked! A year later, here I am as a Tomb Raider fanatic. 2) Why Lara Croft? What do you like/admire about her? What do you think drew you to her? I really admired how 2013 Lara grew into this hardened “cool”-type character while still remaining grounded. I was drawn to her and I still think she’s a lovely woman, but classic Lara is my favourite.

  • Gay Subculture Identification: Training Counselors to Work with Gay Men
Article 22 Gay Subculture Identification: Training Counselors to Work With Gay Men Justin L. Maki Maki, Justin L., is a counselor education doctoral student at Auburn University. His research interests include counselor preparation and issues related to social justice and advocacy. Abstract Providing counseling services to gay men is considered an ethical practice in professional counseling. With the recent changes in the Defense of Marriage Act and legalization of gay marriage nationwide, it is safe to say that many Americans are more accepting of same-sex relationships than in the past. However, although societal attitudes are shifting towards affirmation of gay rights, division and discrimination, masculinity shaming, and within-group labeling between gay men has become more prevalent. To this point, gay men have been viewed as a homogeneous population, when the reality is that there are a variety of gay subcultures and significant differences between them. Knowledge of these subcultures benefits those in and out-of-group when they are recognized and understood. With an increase in gay men identifying with a subculture within the gay community, counselors need to be cognizant of these subcultures in their efforts to help gay men self-identify. An explanation of various gay male subcultures is provided for counselors, counseling supervisors, and counselor educators. Keywords: gay men, subculture, within-group discrimination, masculinity, labeling Providing professional counseling services and educating counselors-in-training to work with gay men is a fundamental responsibility of the counseling profession (American Counseling Association [ACA], 2014). Although not all gay men utilizing counseling services are seeking services for problems relating to their sexual orientation identification (Liszcz & Yarhouse, 2005), it is important that counselors are educated on the ways in which gay men identify themselves and other gay men within their own community.

My use of transcode, a term introduced by the semiotician A.J. Greimas and carried into the digital realm by Lev Manovich, refers to how cultural elements such as assumptions, biases, priorities emerge within programming code and software. It demonstrates how cultural norms persist across different mediums and posits that, in many ways, the capacity to be flexible defines cultural ideologies. At the software level, programming languages work like performative speech: grammar which produces effects. When cast as speech, coming from a body (or bodies) instead of hardware, information structures can be perceived as acting within regimes of corporeality; when cast as software, information structures demonstrate and advertise the capabilities of hardware. Although often aligned with veracity and stability in its proximity to (computer) science, software is not culturally neutral.

ReCently, a growing body of seX-positive literature has provided a counter-narrative that positions sex as something that is fundamentally good and healthy. However, the perspeCtives and experiences of sexual minority men have been critiCally absent from this disCourse. Grounded in empowerment theory and using a critiCal queer lens, this qualitative study aimed to extend seX-positive research to the topiC of sexual minority men’s sexual empowerment. The present study used interviews with sex workers, aCtivists, educators, therapists, and sexual assault survivors with a range of interseCting identities to shed light on the ways in whiCh these sexual minority men understand and experience sexual empowerment. Results of these interviews indiCated that partiCipants understood sexual empowerment to include elements of sexual selF-humanization, sexual liberation, sexual sovereignty, and belonging to a sexually empowering community.

Romero Program of Social Work, Ryerson University This paper will be looking at the influences of the creation of LGBTQ gaymer groups in the gaming world and within the LGBTQ communities itself. Through queering space and community development theory lenses, I look at how gaming that is dominantly viewed as being a straight, white, able bodied and a male space can be queered by the inclusion of LGBTQ players/gaymers. Using a critical ethnographic method through interviewing gaymer group leaders, I will explore how gaymer groups have had an impact on combating the harassment experienced by LGBTQ players/gaymers and how these groups have created their own communities that act as a form of queering up space and resistance to homophobia iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I express my warm thanks to my parents for their support as I enter this final phase of my academic education.

In fact, a survey of recent games found that while straight males and females account for 66% and 31% of characters respectively, the number of LGBT+ characters is just under 3% of the total 1. Each case is driven by three interlocking questions: How have people used technology to make queer identities? How can practices of re-using and repurposing media technology express queer identities? How can the identity of a given technology impact and influence these expressions? Drawing on key texts from gender studies, the history of sexuality and the philosophy of technology, this dissertation first offers a theory of how queer interactions with media technologies can make identities; which it applies to developments of queer identities from the 1890s up to 2018.
