MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETICS KENYA PRESIDENT

Ladies and Gentlemen! I give my warm welcome to all the Athletics Kenya Masters’ management committee, competitors, coaches, organizers and hosts of the 1st edition of Athletics Kenya Masters cross country meet, which I have gladly held under my honorary patronage. Eldoret has on a number of occasions demonstrated its outstanding capabilities as the host of prestigious sports events. Organizational experience, moderate facilities, and wonderful spectators all contribute to this success. I am happy that this has again been recognized and we will have the opportunity to host athletes from all over the East Africa, including a strong Kenya representation. The main strength of the “Masters” Athletics Championships lies primarily in the fact that they are open to a very broad group of participants. The attending competitors prove that regardless of the age one can always set new goals and overcome one’s own limitations and barriers. I would like to thank you, dear Competitors, for making physical activity an integral part of your life and thus inspiring others to follow your example. By pursuing your passion, you at the same time significantly contribute to developing the foundations of healthy and fit society. I am convinced that the 1st Athletics Kenya Masters cross country Championships will create an opportunity not only to test your strength with other sportsmen of the world, but also to discover the beauty of Eldoret and the city of champions and entire Rift Valley the cradle of athletics legends. Athletics Kenya Masters Brief History Background

INTRODUCTION Kenya is known around the globe for producing the best middle and long distance running for over half a century since Kenya participated in the world of athletics by its pioneer founding fathers of led by the legendary runners such as, Nyandika Maiyoro, Kanuti Sum, Kipketer Talam and Paul Boit in First African championships in Madagascar in 1948 and Empire Games in Vancouver Canada 1954. Kenya has shown its passion and commitment by competing in the World Masters Athletics Championships held in the coastal city of Malaga Spain, Perth Western Australia and Rades in Tunisia.

Kenya is gearing to participate in forthcoming World Masters Athletics Championships scheduled to take place in summer of 2020 in Toronto Canada, this will be the fourth time Kenya will be featuring at global stage. Masters are formerly known as veterans since the formation of Masters Athletics by European former athletes in mid 70s.

Masters Athletics Championship are designed for retired athletes from the age of 35 onwards for women and 40 years for men.

At the World Masters Athletics Championship in Australia in 2016, Kenya was the top placed African country but in position 18 overall out over 100 nations that participated in the championship that took place on October 26 to November 6 in Perth, 2016.

Kenya which was participating for the first time at the World stage in Australia two years ago, the country amassed ten medals which included three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Second outing for the national Team Kenya Master was in Malaga Spain 2018 World Masters Athletics Championship, where Kenya came to position 11 in over 70 countries participated.

COMPETITION The World Masters Athletics Championships formerly are the biennial championships for Masters Athletics events held under the auspices of World Masters Athletics formerly called the World Association of Veteran Athletes, for athletes over the age of 35 years.

Athletics Kenya Masters is a class of the for veteran athletes in the events of track and field, and . The competitions feature five-year age groups beginning at age 35. Men as old as 105 and women in their 100s have competed in running, jumping and throwing events.

World Masters Athletics (WMA) is the worldwide governing body for Masters Athletics. It provides a global standard of rule modifications (based upon the international rules for the sport created by the IAAF) for athletes of a certain age. Each individual country governs its own affairs with an organizational governing body that is an affiliate to WMA.

OBJECTIVES World Masters Athletics Championships is the testament to the vision, passion and determination of many athletes whom continue athletics throughout their lives and demonstrates that age is no barrier in the quest of excellence, good sportsmanship and lasting friendships.

Kenya being a global powerhouse in athletics, Kenyan veterans will have the opportunity of extending the country’s dominance in this age group competition at the world level. Retired Kenyan athletes will be able to rekindle Kenya’s fond memories of their glorious days as active participants by attempting to rule the world at old age. Kenya’s participation will be used to exhibit Kenya’s dominance in athletics from youth, junior, senior to veterans’ level. Kenya’s participation will be able to brand and sell the country’s brand at the international level by the heroics our World Conquerors dominate the championships which will be viewed by a viewership by millions of viewers. It is the tale of ordinary athletes and administrators achieving the extraordinary, using their skills and commitment for the benefit of their fellow athletes. The

championship will see an impressive mix of former Olympians, world and national record al holders all vying for the coveted title of world champion.

JUSTIFCATION The event will be televised worldwide and will receive wide coverage in all the modes of the media including electronic, print, social media and internet. The sponsorship of the athletes will give the corporate a platform of branding and selling its products. The sponsor will have a long term relationship with Masters Athletics Kenya and veteran athletes. Getting involved is part of promoting Kenya’s heritage by associating with veteran sportsmen and women who have brought glory to the country.

BENEFITS The sponsor will get brand visibility through the media coverage both locally and internationally. The sponsor will be appreciated for supporting the aged (Senior Citizens) as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) charity initiative

CONCLUSION Sponsoring the team is enhancing and preserving Kenya’s heritage by appreciating the veterans who have otherwise been overlooked despite placing Kenya on the world map which will have the sponsor have a legacy of the institution’s involvement with Kenya’s sporting heroes.

Who is Athletics Kenya Masters (AKM?) Athletics Kenya Masters is a national organization aimed at promoting sports participation for retired and veteran athletes to pursue active sports even after retirement. Our aim is to encourage, organize and manage athletics in 5-year age groups for Masters Athletes – men and women aged 35 years and over. Whatever you’re current level of fitness or age, there is a place for you in the true Kenya spirit.

Entries: Rules and Regulation Deadline for the receipt of entry forms is Saturday 26 April 2019. Entries post-marked or received after 25 April 2019 will be returned. No telephonic arrangements will be attended to. All monies to be paid in advance. No late payment of entry fees will be allowed. An athlete, who has not paid the entry fee and/or is not a paid-up member of a county and affiliated member of AKM, will not be allowed to participate under any circumstances. Athletes must therefore ensure that they are fully paid-up members of their region and AKM. Entry forms will be cross-checked against county and national membership lists.

Please make sure that we have received your entry form, as we cannot take responsibility for entries not received. AK Masters will confirm entries by a SMS/Whatsapp or an e-mail. If you have not received an SMS/Whatsapp or e-mail by 25 April 2019, contact AKM or TAACH FM to enquire about your entry. If you have not received an SMS/Whatsapp or e-mail and you bring your entry documents to the stadium, your entry will be checked and you will be allowed to participate, because entry data would have already been done and allocation to events made and therefore cannot be altered in any way.

There is no restriction on the number of entries. However, it is up to the individual athletes to ensure that their events do not clash.

Registration: Registration will take place on Thursday, 25 April 2019 (06h30 – 18h00) at Eldoret Polytechnic Sports Grounds and Friday/Saturday (06h45 – close of program).

Athletes will receive a registration envelope which will include a program, Bib and dinner/dance tickets (if booked) etc. Athletes must report to their respective events at least 30 minutes before the start of the event, except for corporate which is at least 45 minutes. No spikes will be provided, athletes to bring own spikes. If a previous event runs late, inform the officials at the next event prior to the starting time of such an event.

AKM Bibs numbers: 2019 AKM permanent Bibs numbers are compulsory and must be worn by all AKM athletes at the back and front. Bibs numbers at the cost of Kes 1000 will only be made available to foreign athletes. The temporary Bib number should be worn at the back of the vest. Please bring your own safety pins.

Age category tags: The wearing of two age category tags is compulsory as per prescribed rules and must be worn at the front and back of the vest. This is also applicable to foreign athletes wearing temporary bib numbers. Age category tags will also be available at the registration table (Kes 1000 per pair).

Participation rules: Participation as per AK / AKM / WMA / IAAF rules.

Cut-off times: As this is a National Championship cut-off times will be implemented. You will be asked to discontinue your event if you are jeopardizing the following event to start on time and if you have not met the AKM medal standard at that point in time.

Anti-doping: Anti-doping measures will be applied as per IAAF rules.

Dress code: AKM Athletes are to wear their sponsor colours and foreign athletes to wear their official national colours. Only under exceptional circumstances, or where county criteria require it, will athletes be permitted to wear their club colours. Remember this is your AKM championship, afford it the dignity it deserves.

Cancellation of events: An athlete may withdraw from an event(s), but will under no circumstances be permitted to enter another event during the championships. Thus, no event may be substituted for another event.

In the case of a change to an event(s), the following will apply: The technical official in charge of the specific event must be informed of the decision timeously, i.e. at least 30 minutes before the start of the event. Lane draws will not be affected in any way, thus the lane will be empty for the specific event. No event will begin before the time indicated on the official program. However, under circumstances beyond control, (e.g. rain/storms etc.) the events can be changed.

Practice attempts field events: Athletes competing in cross country events may only have practice warm up on the field under the control of a technical official.

Relays: A team manager or county representative from each province/country must be appointed to complete a list of their relay teams. A relay entry form for completion will be provided by AK Masters Athletics. Forms must be submitted to the event secretary at the registration table by 8.00am on Saturday. The athlete’s name and completed years in brackets must appear on the form. Cost per team (no restriction on number of teams entered, provided they meet the age-composition requirement), is Kes4000 per team in cash. Certificate will be awarded to the first six teams (men and women).

Composition of relay teams: Men - 35 - 69 years 180 (average cumulative ages). Women - 35 - 69 years 180 (average cumulative ages).

Medals: The first six finishers in each event will receive AK Masters Athletics Championship certificate (in accordance with the existing AKM medals standards). A secondary medal will be awarded to athletes, placed in the first six places, who did not meet the existing AKM medal standard.

If a foreign athlete is placed in any of the first six positions in an event, they will receive the AKM gold, silver or bronze medal. Similarly the first six Kenyan Athletes will also receive the same medals, irrespective of their positions when competing together with the foreign athletes, provided they meet the aforementioned criteria.

Only collect your certificate once the results have been announced. Athletes must collect their own medals. Alternatively, a form will be provided by AK Masters Athletics, giving an identified athlete specific and therefore signed permission to collect a medal(s) on behalf of another athlete.

Kenya Records: The onus is on the athlete to see that the paperwork is done. Remember that individual event records can be set during multi events (8km, 6km and 2km), regardless of whether the athlete completes the whole multi event or not. However, a record so submitted must comply with the rules for the individual event.

Opening Ceremony: Saturday, 27 April 2019 (6h45 – 14h30): Two representatives from each province/county will parade their banner/ flag. Other athletes of the counties are welcome to join the parade and walk behind their respective banners. Representatives must report at the start at 8h30 where they will form up behind the AKM banner. Once the parade is in position in front of the main stadium, the Kenya National Anthem will be played, followed by a minute silence and a few short speeches. The ceremony will not exceed 30 minutes.

Medical Services: Qualified paramedics will be on duty throughout the championship.

Security: Please ensure that no articles of value are visible in vehicles. Security will be on duty during the championship. Please tip generously. Be careful with your personal belongings throughout the championship as the organizers cannot be held responsible for any loss of possessions. Entry to the stadium will be controlled, no unauthorized people will be allowed to enter the ground.

Parking: Limited parking is available in front of the polytechnic athletics track, please also use the parking next to the track, entry from Kapsabet Road, opposite the open Restaurant club.
