THE AUSTRALIAN BALLET 1 2 SWAN LAKE MELBOURNE 23 SEPTEMBER– 1 OCTOBER SYDNEY 2–21 DECEMBER Cover: Dimity Azoury. Photography Justin Rider Above: Leanne Stojmenov. Photography Branco Gaica Luke Ingham and Miwako Kubota. Photography Branco Gaica 4 COPPÉLIA NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dame Peggy van Praagh’s fingerprints are on everything we do at The Australian Ballet. How lucky we are to have been founded by such a visionary woman, and to live with the bounty of her legacy every day. Nowhere is this legacy more evident than in her glorious production of Coppélia, which she created for the company in 1979 with two other magnificent artists: director George Ogilvie and designer Kristian Fredrikson. It was her parting gift to the company and it remains a jewel in the crown of our classical repertoire. Dame Peggy was a renowned Swanilda, and this was her second production of Coppélia. Her first was for the Borovansky Ballet in 1960; it was performed as part of The Australian Ballet’s first season in 1962, and was revived in subsequent years. When Dame Peggy returned to The Australian Ballet from retirement in 1978 she began to prepare this new production, which was to be her last. It is a timeless classic, and I am sure it will be performed well into the company’s future. Dame Peggy and Kristian are no longer with us, but in 2016 we had the great pleasure of welcoming George Ogilvie back to the company to oversee the staging of this production. George and Dame Peggy delved into the original Hoffmann story, layering this production with such depth of character and theatricality.

  • Rosalind Nugent-Williams Thesis (PDF 1MB)
Thespioprudence Australian film directors and Film performance “How do our directors work with actors on performance and what is the dominant approach to directing actors in Australian film?” Rosalind Nugent-Williams School of Film and Television Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology Thesis in partial fulfilment of Master of Arts by Research 2004 State of Original Authorship The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted for a degree or diploma at any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made. Signed: Date 2004 Acknowledgements I wish to thank Helen Yeates and John Hookham for their patience, generosity and wisdom as my supervisors. I also wish to thank my friends, Merran Lawler, Mark Thomas, Margaret-Mary Batch, Genevieve Thackwell-James, my teacher, Wayne Taylor, and my partner, Sean Riordan, for their support. Abstract “…we, directors and actors, put into practice the practice – we don’t practice the theory. I think that if there is no theory of acting, at least there are theoretical laws that we may find, curiously enough, in all traditions of acting. It is true that the term “theory of acting” does not seem fundamentally wrong, but it seems always somewhat imperialistic and pretentious. I prefer to use fundamental laws which we sometimes know but then sometimes lose and forget. It is only practice that all of a sudden can make law or tradition rise to the surface. I will not say then that there is no theory of acting; on the contrary, there have been many of them.

  • Place at the Coast Music Credits
music chris neal Composer Chris Neal: Composer Chris Neal had previously worked with director George Ogilvie on the 1985 'issues' film Short Changed. By the time Chris Neal did these two films with Ogilvie, he had become a prolific composer for film and television, and was no doubt happy that memories of his first feature film, the ill-fated Crosstalk, had been swept aside, though it was an early example of Australian feature film electronica. The Place at the Coast also shows some then modern stylings in the underscore. Coincidentally producer Ross Matthews had become the EP on Crosstalk during its tortured production path, and it was a New South Wales Film Corporation financed venture, another film, like The Place at the Coast, that was caught up in the Pepper distribution scandal. Neal also did the score for The City's Edge, the NSWFC funded 1983 straight to tape noir outing which had been co-written by Robert Merritt and the film's director Ken Quinnell (and yet another caught up in the Pepper scandal). Quinnell and Merritt then collaborated on the early drafts for Short Changed - Merritt ultimately took the final sole screenplay credit - Neal wrote the score for the film, and Matthews produced it for the NSWFC, making for a certain sort of symmetry in the production credits for all these films. Neal would go on to a long career as a composer of scores for film and television, and would again work with Ogilvie on the mini-series version of the D'Arcy Niland novel, The Shiralee.
