  • The Georgian National Academy of Sciences (GNAS) and Its First President
    The Georgian National Academy of Sciences (GNAS) and its First President On 10 February, 2011 70 years had passed since the establishment of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, and 120 years since the birth of its First President, Academician Nikoloz Muskhelishvili. It is envisaged to mark these significant dates by convening International Scientific Conferences. It is common knowledge that the development of scholarly and creative thought in Georgia has a rich past, as reflected in the highly intensive and fruitful activity of the Georgian people in the field of spiritual culture. Many centuries ago, outstanding figures of Georgian culture created remarkable translations and original works at enlightenment and scholarly seats, as the Philosophical-Rhetorical School in Colchis (4th c.), Centres of spiritual culture in Palestine (5th c.), Syria (6th c.), Greece (10th –15th c.) and Bulgaria (11th c.). It was at these seats that the best representatives of our nation familiarized themselves with Christian, as well as Oriental culture, scholarship and literature, paving the way for setting up of world-famous Gelati and Iqalto Academies in Georgia. The existence of hearths of higher education in Georgia is attested in the 12th century (and even earlier). These hearths were centres resting on advanced Hellenistic traditions of the time, offering Eastern and Western philosophy covering all the principal spheres of progressive scholarship and education of the day and pointing to the stable statehood and high cultural level of this country. Old Georgian culture is an expression of Hellenistic culture – a symbiosis of East – West Cultures – the culture of a country lying at the crossroads of the East and West traditionally uniting in itself streams of Eastern and Western civilizations.

    UDK 16 (497.6) Nijaz Ibrulj Faculty of philosophy University of Sarajevo BOSNIA PORPHYRIANA AN OUTLINE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOGIC IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA Abstract The text is a drought outlining the development of logic in Bosnia and Herzegovina through several periods of history: period of Ottoman occupation and administration of the Empire, period of Austro-Hungarian occupation and administration of the Monarchy, period of Communist regime and administration of the Socialist Republic and period from the aftermath of the aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina to this day (the Dayton Bosnia and Herzegovina) and administration of the International Community. For each of the aforementioned periods, the text treats the organization of education, the educational paradigm of the model, status of logic as a subject in the educational system of a period, as well as the central figures dealing with the issue of logic (as researchers, lecturers, authors) and the key works written in each of the periods, outlining their main ideas. The work of a Neoplatonic philosopher Porphyry, “Introduction” (Greek: Eijsagwgh;v Latin: Isagoge; Arabic: Īsāġūğī) , can be seen, in all periods of education in Bosnia and Herze - govina, as the main text, the principal textbook, as a motivation for logical thinking. The steady development of societies can be achieved when men and women have the equal power with equal opportunities and resources to shape their own lives and to contribute to their families, societies and countries. The internationally recognized indicators of aforesaid gender mainstreaming are the areas of Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. In Turkey, even though the legal basis of equality of women and men in these areas have been strengthened through legislative regulations enforced, the need to overcome the obstacles women face when participating to social life as complete and equal individuals and taking all precautions for this is still ongoing. In this study, gender equality in the Turkish higher education system was examined. For this purpose, the schooling rates in higher education, employment rates and participation rates in decision making mechanisms in management of women were examined in the light of gender equality indicators.

    Academician RADU MIRON at ninety Mihai Anastasiei, Constantin Udrişte and Vladimir Balan The academic community from Iaşi together with the Romanian mathematicians, as well as many geometers around the world will enjoy to celebrate in 2017 the 90-th anniversary of Academician Radu Miron. His vast and compact scholarly work has brought him international recognition and has established him as a leader of the Romanian school of geometry. A remarkable gifted professor, endowed with the grace of speaking, he has left an undeniable mark upon numerous generations of mathematics teachers. Being highly concerned with teaching geometry at all levels, he wrote books for pupils and students, as well as monographs having a high scientific level meant for researchers. He supervised 30 Ph. D. students, thirteen of which were from abroad: Japan, Italy, Hungary, Vietnam. Academician Prof. Dr. Radu Miron was born at Codăesti, in Vaslui County on October 3, 1927. He attended the courses of the primary school in his native village. Then he finished his high school studies at the technical school in Bîrlad. In 1948 he enrolled at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the "Al.I. Cuza" University in Iaşi. Here he drew the attention of the famous and exigent teaching staff, so that, at the beginning of the 3-rd year he was appointed instructor and shortly afterwards he was promoted to assistantship. A year after his graduation from the faculty he begin preparing his Doctor's Degree - the chosen specialty being Mechanics - at the Mathematical Institute of the Romanian Academy, the Iaşi branch, his main advisor being academician M.

Michael McGinnis, MD, MA, MPP, as the Leonard D. Schaeffer Executive Officer for the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). In this role, Dr. McGinnis will serve as the chief operating officer and will be responsible for managing the NAM’s programs and guiding its operations on a daily basis. He will also continue to direct the Leadership Consortium for Value & Science-Driven Health Care. Dr. McGinnis’s appointment is effective January 1, 2016. Dr. McGinnis currently serves as Senior Scholar and Executive Director of the NAM Leadership Consortium (formerly the Institute of Medicine [IOM] Roundtable) for Value & Science-Driven Health Care, which he has headed for 10 years. Under his tenure, the Consortium has launched and stewarded the nationally recognized Learning Health System Initiative, a program of collaborative action and publications dedicated to aligning science, informatics, incentives, and culture for continuous improvement and innovation in health. Its work is conducted through five national Innovation Collaboratives, which provide a trusted venue for information sharing and cooperation among stakeholder organizations with common interests. Prior to his work at the Academies, Dr. McGinnis was Senior Vice President at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, where he founded and directed RWJF’s Health Group. From 1977 to 1995, Dr. McGinnis served as Assistant Surgeon General, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, and Founding Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

    Science Diplomacy to Promote and Strengthen Basic Research and International Cooperation Workshop Virtual Workshop Dates: 12 March 9:00 - 13:00 EST 15 March 12:00 - 16:00 EDT 16 March 12:00 - 16:00 EDT The workshop will discuss the role of the Global Research Council (GRC) in science diplomacy to promote and strengthen basic research and international collaboration. The goals of the workshop will be: ● Describe institutional goals and structures currently available or being proposed for international basic research cooperation in a frame of science diplomacy; ● Consider areas within basic research that might be worth exploring in greater depth to better connect research funders and science diplomacy practitioners (e.g. diplomats, researchers); ● Explore opportunities for the Global Research Council and funder communities to work together on those areas and projects; and ● Discuss roles that multilateral organizations (e.g. International Science Council, SESAME, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) might play in contributing to international basic research cooperation.
