CHOIR SCHOOL for a Song! A first-class start for 7–13 year olds Patron: The Duchess of Kent www.choirschools.org.uk Choir schools need new recruits every year. This is an exciting option for any child who enjoys singing! he Choir Schools’ Association represents 47 schools T attached to cathedrals, churchesandcollege chapels, educating nearly 25,000 pupils, including more than 1200 boy and girl choristers. A number of foundations without their own choir school also belong to CSA. Some schools cater for children up to 13. Others are junior schools attached to senior schools through to 18. Many are Church of England but the Roman Catholic, Scottish and Welsh churches are all represented. Most choir schools are independent but three of the country’s finest maintained schools are in membership. Most choristers qualify for financial help with fees, from the school or foundation. Some receive additional help through the Government’s Choir Schools’ Scholarship Scheme which is administered by CSA. Being a chorister is a huge commitment for children and parents alike. In exchange they receive “an excellent musical training and first-class academic and all-round education” They also acquire self-discipline and a passion for music, both of which stay with them for life. It is rare to find a family with any regrets. “For me, being a Chorister is so much fun. I do lots of music and also lots of football – and we have been on TV this week.” Chorister Thomas HELP WITH FEES There is every chance financial help can be found for a child who sings well, who really wants to be a chorister and whose parents genuinely cannot find the money. Chorister places are heavily subsidised by the choral foundations and/or choir schools and most parents can expect to pay considerably reduced fees. The Government funding mentioned earlier comes through The Choir School Scholarship Scheme, part of the Music and Dance Scheme, which you can learn more about at www.dcsf.gov.uk/mds. Choir school staff will be pleased to talk to you about the financial implications of having a chorister in the family or you can contact CSA for further information. MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION The simple checklist below will help you decide whether a choir school would be right for your child. 1. Study the map on page 5 to see which schools you might consider. 2. Contact them for a copy of their prospectus and details of choristerships and voice trials. 3. Visit the school/s, remembering to check what is expected of new recruits academically as well as musically. 4. Discuss fees at this stage too. Most chorister places are considerably cheaper than the average cost for an independent school. Discounts vary from school to school. 5. Check too whether choristers need to be day or boarding pupils. A few schools offer the option. Don’t be put off if your family has no experience of boarding – the children love it! 6. If you are uncertain as to your child’s ability ask to have him/her assessed at an informal audition. “If you have a passion for music this is the most incredible way to fulfil it. The school and choir push you really quite hard, but if you love music you will emerge a more knowledgeable, independent and talented person.” Gus CHOIR SCHOOLS IN THE UK G = Junior Schools G = Senior Independent and Maintained Edinburgh Schools with Junior Schools or Departments G = Associate Newcastle Members upon Tyne Carlisle Durham Ripon Blackburn York Leeds Bradford Wakefield Manchester Liverpool Lincoln Grimsby Sheffield Southwell Lichfield Leicester Norwich Peterborough Coventry Wolverhampton Ely Worcester Warwick Cambridge Hereford Cheltenham Gloucester Oxford St Albans Chelmsford Llandaff Cardiff Windsor London Bristol Guildford Rochester Wells Croydon Salisbury Winchester Reigate Canterbury Portsmouth Chichester Exeter Truro www.choirschools.org.uk Choir Schools Association UK, Associate and Overseas Member Schools KEY: (C) = for Collegiate Church or Chapel (P) = for Parish Church (D) = for Day Pupils only (G) = for Girl Choristers* (RC) = for Roman Catholic (NC) = Foundation without choir school *Schools marked (G) educate all the girl choristers.
