Price Department of Biological Sciences Salisbury University This document is a pictorial reference of Maryland Scarabaeoidea genera (and sometimes species) that was created to expedite the identification of Maryland Scarabs. Our current understanding of Maryland Scarabs comes from “An Annotated Checklist of the Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) of Maryland” (Staines 1984). Staines reported 266 species and subspecies using literature and review of several Maryland Museums. Dr. Price and her research students are currently conducting a bioinventory of Maryland Scarabs that will be used to create a “Taxonomic Guide to the Scarabaeoidea of Maryland”. Their larvae (white grubs) are below-ground pests of turfgrass, corn, and other agricultural crops. In some regions, such as the Midwestern United States, they are among the most important pest of turfgrass, building up in high densities and consuming roots below the soil/thatch interface. Five species are known to be important pests of turfgrass in North America, including northern masked chafer, Cyclocephala borealis Arrow; southern masked chafer, Cyclocephala lurida Bland [for- http://jipm.oxfordjournals.org/ merly Cyclocephala immaculata (Olivier)]; Cyclocephala pasadenae (Casey); Cyclocephala hirta LeConte; and Cyclocephala parallela Casey. Here we discuss their life history, ecology, and management. Skelley1 INTRODUCTION: The Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera castanea (Arrow), has been a pest in the northeastern United States since the 1920s. Generally not as abundant or damaging as the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman), the Asiatic garden beetle is occasionally numerous enough to cause damage to turf, gardens and field crops, as well as simply being a nuisance. The discovery of the Asiatic garden beetle in Florida was not unexpected. This is the first report of this pest beetle in the lower southeastern U.S. coastal plain. IDENTIFICATION: Asiatic garden beetles (Fig. 1a-b) can be confused with native species of scarab beetles in the genus Serica. In general, Asiatic garden beetles are recognized by their robust body, 8-9 mm in length, reddish- brown color with iridescent sheen, hidden labrum, antenna with 10 segments (not 8-9), and strongly flattened hind tibia with apical spurs separated by the tarsal articulation. If in doubt, the long male genitalia with the large movable apical hook is distinctive (Fig. 1c-d, dissection required). Identification keys including adult Asiatic garden beetle can be found in Harpootlian (2001) for South Carolina and Evans (2002) for the entire U.S. Larvae are white grubs that are distinguished from other known U.S. scarabs by their maxilla being laterally swollen and bulbous. Identification of larval Asiatic garden beetles can be made with the key of Ritcher (1966). -

Fact Sheet Maladera castanea Arrow 1913 Taxonomy Sub family: Melolonthinae / Tribe: Sericini / Genus: Maladera Distinguishing Features Small oblong shaped beetles, body length 7-11mm. Body colouration brown, reddish brown to Maladera castanea dorsal view orange, with a iridescent sheen. Setae and scales absent on elytra. Antennae with 10 segments Photographer: and a 3-segmented club. Clypeus with apex appearing rounded to subquadrate, heavily upturned. Pia Scanlon Labrum indistinct, fused to the apical margin of the clypeus. Mesocoxae widely separated, metasternal anterior border rounded medially and not projecting forward of coxae. Metacoxae greatly enlarged. Penultimate ventrite and propygidium separated by a suture. Metatibial apical spurs separated, so that tarsi can move between them. Tarsal claws with a median tooth. The availabi- lity and status of each name is examined, discussed and an updated list of subspecies, available and unavailable synonyms is given. Agrilus bidentulus Ganglbauer, 1890 is considered a valid species and excluded from the synonymy of A. cyanescens; A. pratensis praeclarus Krogerus, 1925 is revalidated as a subspecies with the new synonym fennicus Obenberger, 1936. Key words: Taxonomy, nomenclature, synonymy, Coleoptera, Buprestidae, Agrilinae, Agrilus, Pa- laearctic Region Introduction This contribution belongs to the nomenclatural-taxonomic series of papers (Jendek 2002a, 2002b, 2002c) on Palaearctic species of the genus Agrilus Curtis, 1825 undertaken with the aim to clean up the synonymy from unavailable names. All names, whether available or unavailable, which were discovered in literature citations are treated herein. Although the primary effort was focused to treat the nomenclatural status of names, several taxo- nomic changes are performed in context with the changes in the nomenclatural status of particular names. Material and methods Abbreviations used: square brackets “[ ]” are used for my remarks and addenda; the mark “[sic!]” (= so, thus) denotes that a word, phrase, passage, etc., that may appear strange or incorrect has been written intentionally or has been quoted verbatim. -

Resumo Holdefer DR, Garcia FRM. 2015. Análise faunística de cerambicídeos (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) em floresta subtropical úmida brasileira. Entomotropica 30(13): 118-134. O trabalho objetivou caracterizar a assembleia de cerambicídeos presente em fragmento de Floresta Subtropical Úmida do sul brasileiro, através de análise faunística, e dos índices de diversidade. Também comparar a eficiência de amostragem dos modelos de armadilha Malaise e armadilha atrativa. No fragmento as armadilhas foram distribuídas na área central e de borda, entre outubro 2005/outubro 2006. Amostrou-se 63 espécies distribuídas em Cerambycinae (S = 28) e Lamiinae (S= 35). Verificou-se a presença de 37 espécies raras, pouco frequentes, acidentais e não dominantes e quatro predominantes: Nyssodrysina lignaria, Eurysthea lacordairei, Chydarteres dimidiatus dimidiatus e Batus hirticornis. A Malaise amostrou maior riqueza, enquanto a atrativa foi mais equitativa. A assembleia de cerambicídeos, através do grande número de espécies raras, baixa constância e dominância, apresentou-se rica e diversa dentro do fragmento em sucessão.
