Election Calendar 2014 You must be registered to vote in . Voter registration is closed during the 21 days before a regularly scheduled election, 6 days before special elec- tions for statewide offices and 13 days for others. Special elections are called to fill vacancies. Voter Registration You are eligible to register to vote if you are: • A citizen of the United States; • A resident of Virginia; • At least 18 years of age on or before the date of the next general election; • Not registered and planning to vote in another state; • and have not had your voting rights removed by a court. UPDATE: if you are already registered, you do not have to re-register unless you have moved or changed your name. However, to remain a qualified voter in all elections, you must notify your General Registrar of any change in name or address in a timely manner. You can check to see if you are registered by calling the Fairfax County General Registrar at 703-222-0776, or by going on- line to www.vote.virginia.gov, where you can also change your voter regis- tration name or address. HOW and WHERE: If you have a current Virginia driver’s license or ID issued by the DMV, you can register online by going to https://www.vote.virginia.gov/. You can also download and print the registration application form from that website or from www.sbe.virginia.gov and take or mail it to your voter regis- tration office (address on form). Voter Registration Application forms are also available at your voter registration office, DMV offices, most public libraries and state and local government offices. Complete and take the form in person or mail to your voter registration office. (See addresses below.) WHEN: Voter Registration Applications are accepted year round. The deadline to register or update your information is the 22nd day before the election date. Applications arriving between the 22nd day before the election and Elec- tion Day will be processed after that election. Contact your General Registrar for additional information.

2 THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF THE FAIRFAX AREA Important Information about Election Day • The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for all elections. • Voting information is available in Spanish in Fairfax County. • Check your current Voter Information Card for your correct polling place. You may also check with www.sbe.virginia.gov, or call 703-222-0776 in Fairfax County or 703-385-7890 in Fairfax City. • Election officers at all polling places are required by law to request your identification. Visit http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/VotinginPerson.html for current information on acceptable forms of identification for voting. • All polling sites offer “curbside voting” for voters at least 65 years of age or with a physical disability. Absentee Voting Registered voters who meet the eligibility requirements may vote by absentee ballot. Visit www.sbe.virginia.gov/absenteevoting.html or www.fairfax- county.gov/elections/absentee.htm or call your local Office of Elections for a list of the requirements. There are special provisions for military, overseas and emergencies. BY MAIL: The application for an absentee ballot to be sent by mail can be downloaded from www.sbe.virginia.gov. You may also request an application by contacting your Office of Elections by mail, Fax, or e-mail (absentee bal- [email protected] for County residents), or obtain one from local govern- ment offices and libraries. Applications may be submitted up to twelve months prior to an election, but must be received by your Office of Elections no later than 5 p.m. on the seventh day prior to an election. Voted ballots must be received in the Office of Election by 7 p.m. on Election Day. They are not accepted at polling locations. IN PERSON: Registered voters who meet the eligibility requirements may apply for, and vote, an absentee ballot in person in the Office of Elections be- ginning 45 days before a general or primary election or at designated satel- lite locations on a more limited schedule. In-person absentee voting is available through the Saturday before each Election Day.
