Our family went through some difficult times in these last years and there was no way that I would have managed to stay in Austin and work on this dissertation without their incredibly generous help with whatever was necessary. I’m very proud to be a member of such a family. The dates that I use in this dissertation are the ones used in the documents. This is important because many of the documents refer to the Julian calendar—abandoned by the Bolsheviks in 1918—rather than the Gregorian calendar used in the rest of Europe. Before 1900, a Julian-calendar date was twelve days before its corresponding Gregorian- calendar date. Beginning in 1900, a Julian date was thirteen days before its corresponding Gregorian date. I use the Russian names of cities and villages because most of my documents are in Russian. Using several names for each place would make the text unreadable, and as all the nationalities in question are currently politically independent, I feel that the previously prevalent fears of Russian linguistic imperialism are no longer justified. All of the translations in this work are mine. My transliterations drop the Library of Congress system’s soft and hard signs to better meet the contemporary reader’s expectations. v Structure of feeling and radical identity among working-class Jewish youth during the 1905 revolution Publication No. Inna Shtakser, PhD The University of Texas at Austin, 2007 Supervisor: Joan Neuberger This dissertation “’Structure of Feeling’ and Radical Identity among Working-Class Jewish Youth during the 1905 Revolution” examines the emotional aspects of revolutionary experience during a critical turning point in both Russian and Jewish history. Most studies of radicalization construe the process as an intellectual or analytical one. I argue that radicalization involved an emotional transformation, which enabled many young revolutionaries to develop a new ‘structure of feeling’, defined by Raymond Williams as an intangible awareness that allows us to recognize someone belonging to our cultural group, as opposed to a well-versed stranger. The key elements of this new structure of feeling were an activist attitude towards reality and a prioritization of feelings demanding action over others. Uncovering the links between feeling, idea, and activism holds a special significance in the context of modern Jewish history. When pogroms swept through Jewish communities during 1905-6, young Jews who had fled years earlier, often after bitter conflicts with their families and a difficult rejection of traditions, returned to protect their communities. Never expecting to return or be accepted back, they arrived with new identities forged in radical study circles and revolutionary experience as activist, self-assertive Jews. The self-assertion that led them away earlier proved them more effective leaders than traditional Jewish communal authorities. Their intellectual and emotional experiences in self-education, secularization, and political vi activism meant creating a new social status within the Jewish community legitimating a new Jewish identity as working-class Jewish revolutionary. vii Table of Contents Introduction – p. 1 1. When pogroms swept through Pale of Settlement towns and shtetls in 1905- 6, starting immediately after the Manifesto was published, young Jews who had earlier left the Jewish community, often after bitter conflicts with their families, returned to protect their homes. They returned with new identities, forged in radical study circles and revolutionary experience, as activist, self-assertive Jews. This dissertation seeks to explain their journey. The 1905 Revolution was the first mass upheaval against the regime in which people from multiple classes and ethnic groups participated. Different population groups joined together to express their specific grievances against the political establishment. Liberals demanded civil rights and parliamentary representation, non-Russian national organizations demanded equality for their languages and cultures, peasants demanded land and the workers demanded better working conditions and a right for representation both by labor unions and by their representatives in parliament. The tsar, frightened and confused by the unexpected popular outburst, agreed in his October 1905 Manifesto to parliamentary representation and a wide variety of civil rights including partial legalization of labor unions. But then, after satisfying the more moderate parts of the revolutionary movement, he began an onslaught against the revolutionaries who were not 1 satisfied with the Manifesto. Since most of the army proved willing to obey the government, the revolution was defeated. From the bloody repression of the workers’ uprising in Moscow in December 1905 to the June the 3rd 1907 dismantling of the allegedly too radical parliament (duma) by the tsar, so the 1905 revolution was gradually defeated. But it provided the empire’s population with some political experience and an enhanced sense of power and dignity. Although the 1905 revolution was a turning point in the lives of many workers,1 radically changing their views of themselves and of their environment, I do not focus on the external events of this revolution or even on revolutionary politics as such. My work deal with the emotional aspect of the revolutionary experience. I treat emotions as constructed and learned reactions such as moral outrage, joy, and pride in asserting a newly emerging personal and communal dignity. While

This article combines both aspects by examining the transnational network formation of one of the most important social movements in late imperial Russia, the Jewish Labour Bund. It furthermore introduces into historiography one of the most fruitful theories in recent social sciences, ‘‘actor-network theory’’. This opens the view on the steady recreation of a social movement and reveals how closely the history of the Bund in eastern Europe was interwoven with large socialist organizations in the New World. Based on a large number of sources, this contribution to migration and movement history captures the creation and the limits of global socialist networks. As a result, it shows that globalization did not only create economic or political net- works but that it impacted the everyday lives of authors and journalists as well as those of tailors and shoemakers. Repeatedly, the Russian Revolutions have attracted the world’s interest. But the emergence of this revolutionary movement was by no means only a Russian matter. Even before Red October, it had a great impact on movements and societies around the globe. Moreover, the Russian movement itself relied on actors who lived and worked far from Russian itself.

    69 National-Cultural Autonomy and ‘Neutralism’: Vladimir Medem’s Marxist Analysis of the National Question, 1903-19201 Roni Gechtman Mount Saint Vincent University Résumé Le présent article explore les points de vue sur la « question nationale » exprimés par Vladimir Medem (1879-1923) —dirigeant et théoricien notoire du Mouvement international des travailleurs juifs, dans la Russie des Tsars, puis, après 1918, dans la Pologne indépendante—, dans des discussions internes au Mouvement, ainsi que dans ses œuvres théoriques. L’article montre que Medem entendait élaborer un programme politique pour le Mouvement, mais aussi établir le fondement d’une analyse théorique complète de la nation vue sous un angle socialdémocrate (c.-à-d. marxiste). Medem, qui était fortement opposé au nationalisme sous toutes ses formes, a proposé comme modèle de rechange à l’État-nation (qu’exigeaient tous les mouvements nationalistes) l’« État des nationalités », où la citoyenneté, nationalement neutre, serait accordée équitablement aux ressortissants de toutes les nationalités. Medem suggérait en même temps que l’État protège activement les minorités nationales, en leur accordant à chacune une autonomie nationale-culturelle comportant un droit de juridiction limité sur les questions culturelles (et uniquement culturelles).     Appendix: The Sources Since the autobiographies referred to for this book are from the period of 1924–34, it was important to relate to some works dealing with that period and with its culture that must have affected the writers of the autobiogra- phies. As the writers all deal with their youth, it seemed especially important to examine the preferred images of youth in the revolutionary culture of the mid to late 1920s. Both Frederick Corney and Anne Gorsuch empha- size the self-image of Bolshevism as a youth movement.1 A model Bolshevik should be youthful in appearance and approach, active, uncompromising, energetic, a doer rather than a thinker and somebody totally committed to the party. I am careful, though, not to assume that similar self-depictions in the autobiographies were affected by the Bolshevik culture of the 1920s, mainly since I see, and describe in this work, similar attitudes among working- class revolutionaries during the 1905 Revolution. While Corney depicts such attitudes in the 1920s as part of a mass rather than an individual identity, my study shows that in 1905 these attitudes had a powerful individual self- asserting dimension. In fact, I suspect that the pre-existence of this identity among working-class revolutionaries was the source of its political strength when adopted by the Bolsheviks and of the advantage that it provided to the Bolsheviks over other revolutionary parties, as depicted by Corney. In general, the autobiographies need to be read with some caution even while not following the overall Bolshevik narrative of politicization prevalent at the time.

Lost Worlds of Labour: Paul Olberg, the Jewish Labour Bund, and Menshevik Socialism Håkan Blomqvist1 One of the darker sides of getting older, I feel, is that of having to outlive so many people one has known. Even here in Rome or in Milan, or wherever I happen to be, I recall those who no longer exist. Ever more seldom does one meet those people to whom one can say: Do you remember? These words of the elderly Ukrainian Jewish socialist, Angelica Balabanoff in Italy, were read out by Ture Nerman at the interment in Skogskyrko- gården’s Jewish burial ground in Stockholm, one day in May 1960.2 Paul Olberg was dead. He had been honoured from near and far with telegrams and flowers of condolence. “In the socialist world we feel deep sorrow and loss”, explained the Party Secretary of Sweden’s Social Democrats, Sven Aspling.     Jews in Wartime Urban Space: Ethnic Mobilization and the Formation of a New Community in Kyiv, 1914-1918 by Larysa Bilous A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Larysa Bilous, 2018 ABSTRACT This dissertation is a case study of wartime Jewish politics and social life Jewish life in Kyiv from 1914 to the end of 1918. The research engages the larger questions of Central and Eastern European history during the Great War in general, and of the Russian Empire in particular—mass mobilization, social engineering, and the emergence of new social and political communities. Kyiv, the capital of the South-Western region of the Russian Empire, was situated in the center of the Pale of Jewish Settlement. During the war, Kyiv was the closest major city to the South-Western front and as such became the transit city for Jews deported for resettlement. Philanthropic activity, developed to aid the Jewish refugees, – the Jewish “home front” – mobilized the Jewish population and significantly democratized communal life. I argue that relief work during the war created a new and officially- sanctioned Jewish public space that enabled the development of a Jewish civil society and established an imagined national community. The wartime turmoil, growing state anti-Semitism, and the activity of Jewish relief organizations all stimulated political activity and furthered the development of a civic collective identity, which enabled an impressive Jewish national movement from 1917–1920. The revolutionary events of 1917 changed Kyiv’s identity and its status in the region.

    Bundist Identity: Jewish Identity versus Marxist Identity Faith Alex Perkins Title: Bundist Identity: Jewish Identity versus Marxist Identity Bundist Identity: Jewish Identity versus Marxist Identity The Bund, a Jewish-Marxist group, was created during a period when many other Marxist and socialist groups formed due to disappointment with the monarchies. Formally, it was known as “Algemeyner Yidisher Arbeter Bund in Lite, Poyln un Rusland” or the General Jewish Labor Bund in Lithuania, Poland, and Russia, but it was called the Bund. The party had to create their own identity to separate themselves from the others and attract potential members to their party. Their dual-identity as Jews and Marxists allowed them to mobilize Jewish workers who had been left out of the larger socialist movement. The Bund advocated for a group that was largely forgotten by the Marxist movement due to the Marxist focus on a single-classless identity. They began as a party with a neutral stance on Jewish rights and later became the strongest advocate for Jewish rights in the Russian Empire. The Bundist ideology changed in the years leading up to the 1905 revolution in reaction to societal pressure and in reaction to the Russian Social Democratic Workers’ Party. Marxist ideology, Jewish culture and identity, and the RSDWP influenced the Bundist identity, and this dual- identity as Jews and Marxists allowed them to attract both groups to their party. The Russian-Jews lived segregated, unassimilated lives in the 19th century. The “Jewish area” of the Russian Empire was called the Pale of Settlement situated in modern day Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, and Lithuania.
