On behalf of us all I extend sympathy, not only to the loved ones of all those who have died of COVID-19, but also to everyone who has been bereaved during this pandemic. Not being able to give loved ones the funeral we would really want to give them is one of the most heart-breaking aspects of the current times. Much in my prayers and yours, have been those who are ill with COVID-19 and all others whose other illnesses have been compounded by the strictures of these times. In a different way, Leaving Certificate students and their families have been much in my thoughts and prayers. -

Belgooly WWDL APPLICATION –SECTION F ATTACHEMENTS (PART 1 AND 2) PART 1: Habitats Directive Assessment (Screening Report) in respect of Application by Cork County Council to the EPA for Wastewater Discharge License for Belgooly Agglomeration. 1 Introduction 1.1 Belgooly, a town of approximately 500 people is located on the R600 national secondary route which connects the City of Cork to Kinsale. It is situated just over 6.0 kilometres to the northeast of Kinsale on the River Stick, which on flowing through the village becomes the Belgooly River which is tidal. Kinsale is one of the busiest ‘hub towns’ in South County Cork. Increased development in Kinsale has had a direct impact on the development of outlying villages. The location of Belgooly has attracted much of this development in the form of housing which has seen the village grow over five fold in the past five to six years. 1.2 The wastewater generated in Belgooly currently discharges to the Belgooly River. The sewage generated by the new housing developments is receiving some secondary treatment from private ‘package treatment units’ . Older village areas (pre 2000) do not receive any treatment. National Archives Church of Ireland Parish Registers SURROGATES This listing of Church of Ireland parochial records available in the National Archives is not a list of original parochial returns. Instead it is a list of transcripts, abstracts, and single returns. The Parish Searches consist of thirteen volumes of searches made in Church of Ireland parochial returns (generally baptisms, but sometimes also marriages). The searches were requested in order to ascertain whether the applicant to the Public Record Office of Ireland in the post-1908 period was entitled to an Old Age Pension based on evidence abstracted from the parochial returns then in existence in the Public Record Office of Ireland. Sometimes only one search – against a specific individual – has been recorded from a given parish. Multiple searches against various individuals in city parishes have been recorded in volume 13 and all thirteen volumes are now available for consultation on six microfilms, reference numbers: MFGS 55/1–5 and MFGS 56/1. Many of the surviving transcripts are for one individual only – for example, accessions 999/562 and 999/565 respectively, are certified copy entries in parish registers of baptisms ordered according to address, parish, diocese; or extracts from parish registers for baptismal searches. Many such extracts are for one individual in one parish only. Some of the extracts relate to a specific surname only – for example accession M 474 is a search against the surname ”Seymour” solely (with related names). Many of the transcripts relate to Church of Ireland parochial microfilms – a programme of microfilming which was carried out by the Public Record Office of Ireland in the 1950s. -

The Kilmichael Ambush - A Review of Background, Controversies and Effects (Seamus Fox – September 2005) On the cold wintry evening of Sunday 28th November 1920, two Crossley tenders, each with nine cadets of the Auxiliary Division of the RIC on board, were travelling from their base in Macroom towards Dunmanway when they were ambushed about 1.5 miles south of the village of Kilmichael, Co Cork by the Flying Column of the 3rd (West) Cork Brigade of the IRA, led by Column Commander Tom Barry. While a number of details remain unclear and many others are disputed, what is clear and undisputed is that by the end of the ambush, nineteen men lay dead. Sixteen of the dead were Auxiliaries and three were IRA men. (For the casualties and details of the personnel – both Auxiliary and IRA involved, see Appendix. Also given in the Appendix is the disposition of the ambushers – the disposition assumes importance when the controversies that arose from the Kilmichael ambush are discussed below.) This essay will look at (1) The background to the ambush (2) The controversies that arose from the ambush and (3) The effects of the ambush. 1.0 Background The Auxiliaries1 arrived in the town of Macroom in early September 1920 (Twohig 1994, pg 126). According to Hart, they arrived in a "district whose police chief declared it to be 'practically in a state of war'. … Almost all the outlying police barracks had been evacuated and burned down … The [British] army had stepped in in May [1920] to try to restore order and found itself embroiled in a vicious little war in the Muskerry hill country west of the town with the Ballyvourney I.R.A.
