Dedicated to the memory of ELMER DREW MERRILL Dedication The completion of the sixth volume of this Flora gives me the privilege to dedicate this to the memory of ELMER DREW MERRILL, a man who has achieved more for the knowledge of the Malesian flora than individual botanist. any other It is neither my intention to give nor is it the proper place for a full biography of this most distinguished American scientist, as it would for the greater part be duplication of his own ROBBINS and the vivid life sketch ‘Autobiographical’ (1953), the scholarly essay by (1958), by SCHULTES (1957), which together give the story of his life, his ambitions, his personality, his immense drive, his multiple interests, his capacity for establishing botanical periodicals as well as of successfully filling the posts of Dean of a Faculty of Agriculture, director the Bureau of Science at Manila, directorofthe New York BotanicalGardens, and administrator of Botanical Collections of Harvard University. It is my purpose to review MERRILL'S aims and vision, ambitions and achievements in the light of his time, to explain the value ofhispioneer works for Indo-Malesianbotany, how he used opportunities and had to bow to unforeseen events and circumstances which in no mean way influenced his career. Naturally MERRILL'S personality pervades the story, that of a straight- forward, righteous person, unbiassed in scientific matters, appreciating any progress in bio- logical science. It is of course especially his great achievements with regard to the knowledge of the Malesian florawhich are the main theme and I will try to elucidate several aspects which he pursued. -

This change took place over the course of the eighteenth century, when nature, from being conceived of as a settled state subject to cyclical change, came to be seen as mobile and mutable. The sense of a mobile, mutable nature--the dissertation's central trope--arose from the experience of travel and discovery, which was accompanied from the first by a vigorous process of transplantation. Plants and seeds were carried across oceans, having been dug up on one continent to be replanted often in another. From being static and predictable, plant life therefore became, for scholars and poets alike, dynamic, mutable, and adaptable. I focus on the writings of a small group of men in the Anglo-American world, including John and William Bartram, Peter Collinson, Alexander Garden, John Ellis, and Carl Linnaeus, who were engaged in the work of transporting, planting, writing about, and classifying botanical objects. -

Introduction The purpose of this group of essays and formal papers is to focus attention on some aspects of bibliography in the service of natural history, and possibly to stimulate further studies which may be of mutual usefulness to biologists and historians of science, and also to librarians and museum curators. Bibli• ography is interpreted rather broadly to include botanical illustration. Further, the intent and style of the contributions reflects the occasion—a meeting of bookmen, scientists and scholars assembled not only to discuss specific examples of the uses of books and manuscripts in the natural sciences, but also to consider some other related matters in a spirit of wit and congeniality. Thus we hope in this volume, as in the conference itself, both to inform and to please. When Edwin Wolf, 2nd, Librarian of the Library Company of Phila• delphia, and then Chairman of the Rare Books Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, asked me to plan the Section's program for its session in Lawrence, June 25-27, 1964, we agreed immediately on a theme. With few exceptions, we noted, the bibliography of natural history has received little attention in this country, and yet it is indispensable to many biologists and to historians of the natural sciences. -

The Linnaean Collections Introduction In its creation the Linnaean methodology owes as much to Artedi as to Linneaus himself. So how did this come about? It was in the spring of 1729 when Linnaeus first met Artedi in Uppsala and they remained together for just over seven years. It was during this period that they not only became the closest of friends but also developed what was to become their modus operandi. Artedi was especially interested in natural history, mineralogy and chemistry; Linnaeus on the other hand was far more interested in botany. Thus it was at this point that they decided to split up the natural world between them. Artedi took the fishes, amphibia and reptiles, Linnaeus the plants, insects and birds and, while both agreed to work on the mammals, Linneaus obligingly gave over one plant family – the Umbelliforae – to Artedi “as he wanted to work out a new method of classifying them”. -

E. D. Merrill, From Maine to Manila Ida Hay Twenty-two years of adventure in Southeast Asia preceded E. D. Merrill’s career as director of several important botanical institutions, among them the Arnold Arboretum. His knowledge of the flora of Asia and the South Pacific was encyclopedic, and it was said he could name more species at sight than any other American taxonomist. Botanik, Gärten und die Zirkulation von Ding- wissen«. The development and management of planted spaces in Northwestern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries depended on the possibilities for circula- tion in the republic of letters of the Dutch golden age. Circulation was accom- panied by questions of managing space, information and “epistemic things” (Rheinberger) for botanists. Against the conceptual backdrop of “circulation” (Raj), “circulatory regimes” (Saunier) and “ensembles of things” (Hahn), this pa- per analyses, first, flowerbeds as a script for managing information that shaped botanical gardens across Europe in Leiden, Uppsala, Coimbra, and as far as Ba- tavia according to Linnaean principles. -
Nature, Colonial Science and Nation-Building in Twentieth-Century Philippines

Pagunsan This article examines colonial nature-making in twentieth century Philippines. It par- ticularly looks into natural history investigations of the American-instituted Bureau of Science and the ways in which it created a discursive authority for understanding the Philippine natural environment. These biological investigations, the article argues, did not only structure the imperial construction of the colony’s nature, but also provided a blueprint for imagining notions of national integration and identity. The article inter- rogates the link between colonial scientific projects and nation-building initiatives, emphasising the scripting of the archipelago’s nature and the creation of a national science through biological spaces. In the aftermath of the Pacific War in the Philippines that brought ‘total destruction’ to the country’s ‘exceedingly valuable and irreplaceable natural history collections’, Eduardo Arguelles Quisumbing (1895–1986), the longest-serving director of the Philippine National Museum (PNM), embarked on a ‘colossal’ mission to rebuild the Natural History Museum of the newly independent Philippines. He rendered a sense of national urgency to the mission, arguing that the museum was an essential ‘repository’ not only for scientific specimens but also, and more importantly, for ‘the Philippine cul- ture’.1 As director of the PNM from 1934 to 1961, utilising his official and overseas con- nections, he headed the relentless project of collecting, mounting and identifying natural history materials, in particular botanical specimens. -
