La familia Lamiaceae es muy diversa en México y se distribuye con preferencia en las zonas templadas, aunque es posible encontrar géneros como Hyptis y Asterohyptis, que habitan en zonas secas y calientes; es una de las familias más diversas en el país, de la cual no se tenían datos actualizados sobre su diversidad y endemismo. -

PERENNIAL FOOD CROPS Achira (Canna edulis) Native to the West Indies and South America. Edible starchy rhizomes. 5 ft tall and 3 ft wide. Needs full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil and regular water. Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) Native to the Mediterranean. Flower scales delicious, leaves used medicinally. 3-5 ft tall and 3 ft wide. Needs full sun and grows well in all soils with compost. Drought tolerant once established. We offer Green Globe and Imperial Star varieties, both producing abundant large chokes. Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) Native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia. Spring spears are tasty raw or cooked, high in antioxidants. 40-60 in. tall, spreading underground. Needs full sun and deep, well- drained soil with regular water. Wait two years before harvesting spears. We offer the heirloom variety, Mary Washington. Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana) Also called Golden Berry or Poja in Hawaii where it’s grown extensively for market, Cape Gooseberry is native to Peru and Chile. It produces many delicious orange husked tropical- tasting fruit that can be nibbled fresh in the garden, baked into pies and tarts, cooked into jams or dried to make Golden Berry “raisins”. It grows 2-4 ft tall and 3-4 ft wide and can perennialize if protected from frost. It prefers full sun and any well-drained soil with compost. You- and your kids- will love this plant! Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) Native to the Mediterranean. Mid-ribs of leaves delicious cooked- tastes like artichoke hearts! Cosmically delectable in baked gratins or pureed into spreadable pates or dipping sauces. -

Dedicated to the memory of ELMER DREW MERRILL Dedication The completion of the sixth volume of this Flora gives me the privilege to dedicate this to the memory of ELMER DREW MERRILL, a man who has achieved more for the knowledge of the Malesian flora than individual botanist. any other It is neither my intention to give nor is it the proper place for a full biography of this most distinguished American scientist, as it would for the greater part be duplication of his own ROBBINS and the vivid life sketch ‘Autobiographical’ (1953), the scholarly essay by (1958), by SCHULTES (1957), which together give the story of his life, his ambitions, his personality, his immense drive, his multiple interests, his capacity for establishing botanical periodicals as well as of successfully filling the posts of Dean of a Faculty of Agriculture, director the Bureau of Science at Manila, directorofthe New York BotanicalGardens, and administrator of Botanical Collections of Harvard University. It is my purpose to review MERRILL'S aims and vision, ambitions and achievements in the light of his time, to explain the value ofhispioneer works for Indo-Malesianbotany, how he used opportunities and had to bow to unforeseen events and circumstances which in no mean way influenced his career. Naturally MERRILL'S personality pervades the story, that of a straight- forward, righteous person, unbiassed in scientific matters, appreciating any progress in bio- logical science. It is of course especially his great achievements with regard to the knowledge of the Malesian florawhich are the main theme and I will try to elucidate several aspects which he pursued. -

He graduated with high honors from the Indiana University School of Music with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music and an Outside Field (Spanish) in 2003 after writing a thesis titled “Resonances of Faulkner in La muerte de Artemio Cruz.” He began at Brown University’s Department of His- panic Studies in 2005 and received his Master’s Degree in 2008; the title of his major paper was “El realismo grotesco en Rayuela.” After receiving a competitive dissertation fellowship, Kyle began work on this dissertation in 2009 and completed it in November 2012. Kyle has taught Spanish at Brown University’s Department of Hispanic Studies and the College of the Holy Cross’s Department of Spanish. -

UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI PISA Dipartimento di Farmacia CORSO DI LAUREA MAGISTRALE IN FARMACIA Tesi di Laurea Analisi dei costituenti volatili emessi in vivo da specie del genere Salvia facenti parte di una collezione dell'Orto Botanico di Pisa mediante la tecnica SPME in GC-MS Relatore Candidata Dott. Guido Flamini Roberta Ascrizzi Correlatrice Dott.ssa Lucia Amadei Anno Accademico 2013-2014 Ai miei genitori. Riassunto Trenta specie del genere Salvia, facenti parte di una collezione dell’Orto Botanico di Pisa, sono state analizzate in vivo tramite la tecnica della Head-Space Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (HS- SPME) abbinata alla GC-MS (gas-cromatografia accoppiata alla spettrometria di massa). Sono stati identificati oltre 300 composti organici volatili (VOC). Il profilo di emissione di tali composti è stato sottoposto ad analisi statistica mediante il clustering gerarchico, effettuato sia sui singoli VOC, sia sulle classi chimiche dei composti. È emersa una discreta correlazione tra le similitudini rilevate dal clustering gerarchico e la provenienza geografica delle specie raccolte. In ragione dell’habitat originario delle diverse specie, infatti, il profilo di emissione in vivo dei VOC muta: piante provenienti da una stessa area geografica tendono ad avere pattern di emissione simili tra loro, sia in termini di prevalenza di composti individuali sia di classi chimiche. Non ho rintracciato nella letteratura studi effettuati su un numero così esteso di Salvie, né studi sulle emissioni volatili spontanee da parte di campioni analizzati in vivo, non sottoposti ad alcun trattamento di essiccamento, macinazione o distillazione. 1. Luerss. (1882), tribù delle Mentheae Dumort (1827), sottotribù delle Salviinae (Dumort.) Endl. (1838). Sono state classificate sinora più di 900 specie di Salvia (ciò ne fa il più numeroso nell’ambito della Lamiaceae), a cui si aggiungono decine di ibridi (di origine naturale o non) e centinaia di cultivars. Le caratteristiche distintive del genere Salvia rispetto agli altri generi delle Lamiaceae risiedono nell’androceo, la parte maschile degli organi sessuali, dove si ha la riduzione a 2 del numero degli stami (rispetto ai 4 tipici della famiglia), la trasformazione dei due stami fertili in strutture a bilancere e la riduzione a 1 sola teca fertile per stame; tali modifiche sono adattamenti evolutivi all’impollinazione incrociata, causata in genere da insetti, ma in America anche da piccoli uccelli. Il genere Salvia è presente allo stato spontaneo in tutti i continenti eccetto l’Australia (in cui si trovano alcune specie naturalizzate), con diffusione nelle regioni temperate e tropicali dei due emisferi ed escursione altitudinale dal livello del mare a oltre 3400 m.
