Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever, Billie Lourd, Lisa Kudrow Booksmart showcases two young rising stars: Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird’s best friend, and younger sister of actor/director Jonah Hill) plays the ambitious, bossy high school student Molly, a performance which earned her a Best Actress Golden Globe nomination; Kaitlyn Dever (also Golden Globe nominated, for her role in the acclaimed Netflix TV series Unbelievable), her best friend Amy. The film is director Olivia Wilde’s debut feature after a 10 year unofficial apprenticeship acting on TV and film sets, learning her craft from filmmakers including Spike Jonze & Martin Scorsese. Her break came when friend and producer Jessica Elbaum suggested she direct a script which after revisions (four screenwriters, all female, are credited as co-writers) became Booksmart. MAC staff is still unpacking (literally and figuratively) from our 2019 Annual Meeting and Capacity Building Training. There was so much good conversation that centered on how we need to be individually and collectively caring for ourselves. We will continue to have those conversations and, as a staff, we are intentionally discussing the culture we want to cultivate at MAC. A couple of months ago I wrote about my commitment to become more flexible and to understand when and why I struggle with flexibility. As we have spent a lot of time in the last few months exploring occupational identity and our individual strengths, I am becoming more aware of why I struggle and the things I need to work on if I want to grow in this area.
