North Main Street), The Meeting Place (209 W. South Main Street) and the Waxhaw Water Tank (113 McDonald Street). Benefits of Local Landmark Designation: Local Historic Designation of structures provides economic benefits, tourism and placemaking benefits, and community‐building benefits. The Town of Waxhaw wishes to preserve the unique character of Waxhaw for generations to come—including its historic buildings. Historic buildings are integral to an excellent Waxhaw visitor experience. Historic structures that are aesthetically cohesive and well promoted can be a community’s most important attraction and reinforce Waxhaw’s unique sense of place. The retention of our historic structures is a way to attract tourist dollars that contribute to the local economy. Waxhaw Local Landmarks: There are currently three designated local historic landmarks in Waxhaw. These are the Waxhaw Woman’s Club (200 E. South Main Street), the Cockinos Building/Antique Mart (portion of the 100 block of W. South Main Street), and the downtown overhead pedestrian bridge over the CSX railroad line. Local Landmark Designation vs. National Historic Registry Listing: National Historic Registry listings are mostly honorary and do not impose any restrictions that prevent private property owners from making changes to their buildings or demolishing them. -
It May Seem Incongruous That One of the Most Insightful and Vital Films
It may seem incongruous that one of the most insightful and vital films about culture, place and legacy in 2020 is such a quiet piece of work, and one about folk music at that, given the necessary volume surrounding Black Lives Matter uprisings in the midst of a pandemic and the (constantly) unnecessary noise of so called discourse on the Internet. But, then, 2020 has been that kind of year. Filmmakers Rob Curry and Tim Plester have followed up The Ballad Of Shirley Collins, their brilliant portrait of the folk legend of the title, with a project whose roots lay in that film’s genesis and release. Southern Journey (Revisited) sees the filmmakers following in the footsteps, almost literally, of Collins and her collaborator Alan Lomax on the late 1950s cross-North America pilgrimage that resulted in the capture and release of some of the most spellbinding indigenous music ever committed to tape. Over the course of the film, audiences spend time with the descendants of the original musicians and those keeping the folk flame alive. It’s a beautiful piece of poetic portraiture and one of the remarkable aspects of it is how it folds and refracts time through a variety of filmmaking devices. There’s a relaxed approach to the film that echoes both the feeling of the original recordings and the places that the film visits. There’s no statement as to the purpose of the trip, just some context of the original trip and the result is a film that isn’t politically overt in any sense and is all the more moving and powerful because of that. -

The History and Evolution of Clogging An Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) by Lindsay Schultz Thesis Advisor Ball State University Muncie, Indiana Presented: December 2009 Graduation: May 2010 · .::: 'I Abstract Dancing is a wonderful way for people to express themselves. There are so many styles of dance in our world today, and each ofthese dance styles had to evolve from something before it. That is how a new dance is born. Old styles of dance are changed or combined to form something new and different. In order for everyone to appreciate dance, it is important for them to be exposed to many styles of dance and learn how it evolved. This helps people understand why each dance style is special and unique. Clogging is one style of dance that is not as well known in the United States by most people in the general public. This thesis project is made to showcase this wonderful style of dance as well as educate the public about what clogging is and where it came from. I will present the findings from my research about the evolution of clogging, show a video of traditional Irish dancing (which greatly influenced clogging), as well as perform a modem clogging routine I choreographed myself. I want everyone to hear about the history as well as see what clogging looks like today in order to gain a greater appreciation for this special dance style. 2 Acknowledgments -I would like to thank Mr. Greg Lund for working with me as my advisor on this project. Abstract The Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank, the first wetlands mitigation bank in the Blue Ridge Province of North Carolina, was created to compensate for losses resulting from highway projects in western North Carolina. The overall objective for the Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank has been to restore the functional and structural characteristics of the wetlands. Specific ecological restoration objectives of this Phase I study included: 1) reestablishing site hydrology by realigning the stream channel and filling drainage ditches; 2) recontouring the floodplain by removing spoil that resulted from creation of the golf ponds and dredging of the creek; 3) improving breeding habitat for amphibians by constructing vernal ponds; and 4) reestablishing floodplain and fen plant communities. -

Our world has experienced unprecedented disruption since we last gathered in the spring of 2020 in our beautiful venues to witness exquisite music, dance, and theatre together. Throughout these many long and painful months of separation and isolation, I have been yearning for the time when we can be together once again. It appears that time is finally now upon us! I am absolutely thrilled to share our plans for celebrating the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s historic 25th anniversary season throughout the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022. Our silver anniversary season will feature a variety of acclaimed guest artists—some new to us and some returning favorites—with an equally wide variety of personal life experiences. They will come to us from across the United States and several different countries. Their experiences inform their work, and we will, for a brief moment in time, commune together as the universal languages of music, spoken word, and movement unite us in hope and healing. Not only has the world changed significantly since we first opened our doors 25 years ago, it has changed dramatically in the last year as we have endured the devastating impact of a global pandemic, social injustice, political uncertainty, and any number of other things. -

Ma performs his innovative program A Distant Mirror, and is joined by CSO cellists Loren Brown, Richard Hirschl, Katinka Kleijn, CSO principal cello John Sharp, CSO principal percussionist Cynthia Yeh, Silk Road Ensemble cellist Mike Block and percussionist Shane Shanahan, and guest cellists Jeffrey Zeigler and Ashley Bathgate. Ma curated A Distant Mirror to explore similarities between the cultural landscape of the 16th and 17th centuries and our own times. The intriguing, cello-centric program of new music is a modern response to the era’s cultural accomplishments and newly-found interest in curiosity, foreshadowing the Age of Enlightenment. The program also celebrates the impact of new ideas from the period's biggest literary figures, Shakespeare and Cervantes.
