- 1 - Dungannon Music and Drama Festival 2012 Adjudicators

Elizabeth Bicker MBE, LRAM, ARAM

Elizabeth Bicker's career in Music has been varied and always challenging. After four years' study at the Royal Academy of Music, London, she first became known as an accompanist, working with professional and amateur musicians, and with a special interest in mentoring our talented young musicians.

Professional engagements have taken her to all regions of the British Isles as both Accompanist and Adjudicator and she has broadcast on BBC and RTE television and radio. BBC N.Ireland made a documentary programme for television, about her rare Pleyel Double-Grand piano and its restoration.

In the role of Chorus Master, Elizabeth spent ten years with N.I. Opera Trust, working with an amateur chorus, professional soloists and orchestra in many performances in the Opera House and in concerts throughout the Province. The reopening of the Opera House in the early 1980s (after bomb damage and refurbishment) was a special time. Elizabeth has been a piano tutor and accompanist in the Music Department of QUB and was a guest lecturer in their Institute of Continuing Education. She is much in demand as a Festival Adjudicator and is an enthusiastic supporter of the Festivals movement and the unique effort made by private teachers and Festival volunteers, who together make it possible for young performers to develop their skills.

Jill O'Hare BA.: Theatre Studies, LGSM, LLAM. Cert FE. GODA. PGCA.Hons. FLAM

Jill O'Hare trained at The Guildhall School of Speech and Drama. She has run her own Drama Studio, taught drama, communication skills and A-level Theatre Studies at schools and specialist colleges. As an experienced examiner and lecturer of the Arts she travels extensively.

Jill is a professional actress and director and enjoys playing and directing in London's West End and Fringe theatres and for television. Her favourite TV experience was working with Patricia Routledge and Clive Swift in "Keeping Up Appearances".

She is an adjudicator member of The British and International Federation of Festivals and has officiated in the UK, Hong Kong, Kenya, California and Sri Lanka. Jill is also a busy member of The Guild of Drama Adjudicators for one and full-length play festivals and has a special interest in Youth Theatre and all Festival work. She is the author of two recently published acting anthologies for young people.

Jill greatly appreciates all the hard work from organisers, teachers, parents and of course the "performers" that all contribute to creating such a worthwhile event. She is so looking forward to meeting you all and being part of your Festival.

- 2 - - 3 - Dungannon Music and Drama Festival 2012

Audrey Behan M.A., LGSM., LLCM.(TD)

Audrey is a native of Dublin and a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London and University College Dublin, where she was awarded an M.A. in Modern Theatre Studies and Performance Theory.

She began her career in Speech & Drama at the tender age of five years when she won 1st prize for Verse Speaking at Dublin's Feis Maitiu! Her performance skills embrace theatre, musicals and film. For more than 30 years Audrey has taught all aspects of the work in private practice, and at Primary, Secondary and Third Level Education. She has worked extensively with teachers and her penchant for Shakespeare has brought her skills and expertise to practitioners and students from all over Ireland. She actively promoted the art of Choral Verse in schools and won many accolades for her work in this area. She runs a successful private practice where many of her students have pursued careers in the theatrical, education and media spheres.

An Adjudicator for more than twenty years, Audrey is a member of the British and International Federation of Adjucicators. She is Senior Speech & Drama Examiner with the Royal Irish Academy of Music and her work in these areas takes her the length and breadth of Ireland and beyond.

- 2 - - 3 - Dungannon Music and Drama Festival 2012 CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

DUNGANNON MUSIC AND DRAMA FESTIVAL ASSOCIATION

CHAIRMAN: Miss V. Leckey SECRETARIES: Mr F. Nesbitt Mrs E. Hill TREASURER: Mr T. Forsythe

VENUES: St Anne’s Church Hall and Presbyterian Church Halls, in Dungannon. DATES: Music Week 5th to 9th March 2012, Verse Speaking Week 12th to 16th March 2012.

The following policy informs you the parent/guardian/carer or teacher of your responsibility throughout the duration of the Festival.

1 PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF ORGANISATION :

The Dungannon Music and Drama Festival Association ( the Association) exists to promote the study and cultivation of Music, Drama & Verse Speaking in the area, to provide a platform for amateur performance and to hold an annual festival ( the Festival) consisting of Non-Competitive and Competitive classes adjudicated by professional musicians and speakers. Entries are accepted from children under 18 years and from adults of 18 years and over.

2 THE FESTIVAL ENVIRONMENT :

The Festival organisers consist of a committee of volunteers drawn from the members of the Association. They seek to provide, as far as is reasonably practicable, a safe environment for all participants. The policy of the Association is to involve parents, guardians, carers and teachers to achieve this. It should be noted that the Festival organisers are not responsible for the supervision of participants on Festival days. Participants should be accompanied by a parent, guardian, carer or other responsible adult to, from and within the Festival environment.

3 TO WHOM DOES THIS POLICY APPLY :

This policy relates to children under the age of 18 years and also those vulnerable adults of any age who are identified to the organisers prior to their arrival at the Festival. This should be done by contacting the address or telephone number on this document. In recognising the needs of children from minority ethnic groups and children who are disabled, the Festival actively seeks to meet needs notified to the Festival organisers by a parent, guardian, carer and/or teacher.

4 FESTIVAL PERSONNEL :

Festival personnel are all volunteers and consist of members of the Association plus others who are recruited on the recommendation of committee members.

- 4 - - 5 - Dungannon Music and Drama Festival 2012

Anyone wearing a name badge may be approached by a parent or child at any time during the Festival. Records are kept of those Committee members/Stewards in attendance on each Festival day. Should any problem be reported, it will be taken seriously and will be documented and dated.

5 PREPARATION FOR ATTENDANCE AT THE FESTIVAL :

Parents, Guardians and/or Carers will receive a copy of the Association’s Child Protection Policy from the participant’s teacher, prior to the Festival By providing this policy to all parents/guardians/carers, the Festival ensures that they are able to make all participants aware of the contents of this policy.

6 PERFORMANCE AREAS AND CHANGING AREAS :

The Association does not provide changing rooms or practice rooms during Festival days. Festival Committee members and Stewards will be present in performance areas while sessions are in progress.

7 PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEOTAPES & PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY :

The use of Video or other cameras is prohibited. Official Photographers may be present on occasions. This policy makes it clear that, where parents do not wish their children to be photographed, then the responsible adult attending with children should ensure they are not included.

8 THE LEGISLATION AND GUIDANCE THAT SUPPORTS THIS POLICY :

Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults {NI} Order 2003 ( presently being read) ; The Protection of Children Act 1999 ; The Care Standard Act 2000 ; Statutory Instrument No. 417 {NI} ; Statutory Instrument No. 439 {NI}.

9 POLICY REVIEW :

The Association will constantly review this policy, improving and enhancing it as necessary. In doing this they will look to The British & International Federation of Festivals for support, and that body, in turn, will look to other agencies for good practice, most notably the NSPCC and the Arts Council of policy guidelines.
