The Tryout Process

Tryouts are judged by judges from professional spirit organizations. There will be three judges. The squad’s coach will sit in on the tryout as well. Expect to see the advisor working the door and getting the students in and out of the gym.

Before you enter the Main Gym, the clinic teachers from your group will demonstrate the material they have taught you during the week of clinics for the judges. By doing this, the judges know what to expect even before anyone actually tries out.

The judges are also given the following guidelines: *Girls are judged individually, not as a member of the group *The number of points awarded to a girl in any category is their call. *If any corrections are made on the score sheet, please initial next to the correction.

After the judges have been prepped for a group’s tryout, the first group will enter the foyer of the Main Gym. There, you will initial a sheet verifying that your name and the number you are wearing match. After you are prompted to do so, you may rally in and arrange yourselves in number order from left to right from the judges’ perspectives. Stand in your spot until you are directed to begin. The judges will identify you by the number you are wearing. This is why it is important to verify that you are wearing the right number as soon as you enter the Main Gym.

When you have completed your tryout, you will exit through the northwest doors of the Main Gym and proceed to the pavilion or quad. Do not loiter around the Main Gym, as it is distracting for other groups trying out.

After you have completed your tryout, the score sheets are collected from the judges and given to staff members to total. One person adds the numbers using an adding machine, while the second person adds the numbers using a calculator and then writes the total at the bottom of the page. After score sheets have been totaled, all numbers are transferred to an electronic tally sheet, so that all scores are side by side. Below is an example of what the tally sheet looks like with all possible points

Tryout Administrative Score Judge #1 Judge #2 Judge #3 # (Paperwork and Clinic Score) 5 100 100 100 100

After all of the scores from a group are tallied and transferred to the master sheet, the total numbers are put in descending order and the natural break is determined. This master list and all clinic scores sheets are strictly confidential and will not be shown to anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q-How many girls will make it for each squad? A- This all depends on the natural break. The natural break refers to the point in the range of scores where there is a “break”. For example, if 10 girls receive a total score of 350 or above and the next closest number to 350 is 320 that would be the natural break. So, the answer is that we never know from year to year how many girls will be on a squad because we don’t know where the break will lie. Q- Who does the judging? A- We will hire 3 judges. Judges are hired from United Spirit Association, Sharp, as well as other professional cheerleading organizations and advisors from surrounding schools. Q- Who is in the room when I try out? A- The members of your tryout group, the judges, the coach of the specific squad Q- What do I do if I am sick or injured on the day of tryouts? A- There is no make up date for tryouts. Injuries will be handled on an individual basis. No one may question how injuries are handled. The Advisors and School Administration will have the final say on all issues surrounding injuries. Q- Should parents be present during clinics and tryouts? A- Parents are encouraged to drop off their students for clinics and tryouts and then pick them up when they are done. Parents and other friends and family members often create a distraction for those trying out. Q- Can I participate in an outside Cheer team or Squad? A- As long as the athlete is able to maintain their Pep Club responsibilities, we will not discourage an athlete to be a member of an all-star team.
