We accordingly started from Florence . 7th 1 4 83 . H uron County , Oh io . on the o f May , These were from ! N the Florence branch elson Higgins , Hyrum Blackman , Asey - i h - Fields , and Milo Andrus . My brother law , James Daley , went a s s h with us far a Mans field , Richlan d County , Ohio , w ere we me t with the Prophet Joseph . hi s brother Hyrum and the rest o f the camp from the east . Ou r leader was El der Orson Hyde . There was one ci rcums—tance th at occurred before we j oined the w of . main camp orthy notice As stated before , I had bought my time from my father, and had pai d hi m the amount agreed - n upon , but still I was not twenty one by ten months . O thi s a c count and as he was so opposed to my going with the “ Mor mons , as he called them , he made an effort to stop me . A s we had to pass h is house on ou r way , we learned h i s intention to stop ! e me at th e county seat , N orwalk and B rother Hyd had learned - t h is plan , he went in and made inqui ry about a road tha we did m not intend to travel , and then B rother N elson H iggi ns and y sel f were di r eot ed to go around the city and take the road to

Mansfield , and he and the sheri ff thinking that we woul d move c slow , d i d not want to overtake u s until we had camped , a cord d i ngly father , sheri ff and driver rank freely , and when they t a d b started they ook the road to Ti ffin , that h een inquired after t a to mislead them , and they drove until long af er d rk , the team becoming ti red they gave up the chase an d heard of us the next t h morning forty miles on e road to Mans fiel d . and they felt as though they had been badly sold , and gave up an d went home . 11th On the of May , we j oined the mai n camp west o f Mans 12th field , and on the the camp was organi zed , and the law o f consecration was fo r the fi rst time presented and we shelled out ' to the last cent , and ou r money went into a commissary s han ds and ou r suppl ies were bought by h im . I shall not try to name the particulars o f thi s j ourney . We j ourneyed on causing con r bl e and sid e a excitement , receiving much good instructions from th e the Prophet Joseph . A fter we got into state o f M issouri , o r rather , before our company ha d crossed the Missi ssi ppi River , a nd we we nt into the dense forest as a company , there o ffered up to the Lo rd ou r fervent prayers , that H e would spare our l ives , an d permit us to return to our famili es , and we felt that it so would be , an d thanks be to the Lord not one o f us were taken by the cholera that visited the camp that a fternoon .

There is one thi ng that I would here relate , that was a great j oy i me w h en to , an d that was the H oly Ghost was poured out on El the Elders , I saw fi re descend an d re st on the heads o f the

. ders , and they spoke with tongues , an d prophesied n On ou r retur to Ki rtland from the mission in the east . I

went to school in Ki rtlan d, studied grammar , and then studied ! Hebrew under P rofessor o f N ew ork . F O C On going back to lorence, h io . in M issouri . I n th e the fal l , after I had and fever for two months - chills

and not able to scarcely walk , I was sent on a mission to Canada , e but owing to the Patriot Wa r, we were not p rmitted to go to O Canada , an d I spent the w inter preach ing i n the S tate o f h io 1840 returned home in the spring o f . an d spent my t ime in labor i ng and preaching in the counties around N auvoo until the O w spring o f 1844 . I was then sent to the state o f hio ith Elder O John Loveless . We traveled in the south pa rt of hi o for two h month s , w en we heard of the assassination o f the Prophet Joseph

and his brother Hyrum . We went home as quick as steam would

. w t John Taylor , who was wounded in the j ail Then ent o Adams u County , where my fam ily had fled for safety . Fo nd them well but much alarmed . A fter we had mou rned the loss o f ou r Prophet and Patriarch a few weeks , du ring wh ich t ime I was chosen one o f the N auvoo pol ice , I helped to watch the city by night and j — worked on the Temple by day got it so that the work o f the 1845 1846 endowments commenced in the fall of and winter o f .

I spent six weeks of the time i n the Temple and was much blest .
