bibliography 159 1- introduction statement of the problem the study of utahs territorial development has revealed an abanabun dance of written material both published and unpublished despite the existence of this material only one historian leonard J arrington 4 has published articles dealing exclusively with the school of the pro- phets an institution of great importance in utah between the years 1867 and 1874 most writers have been content to discuss and explore the outward manifestations of events places and people while few scholars have examined the intricate workings of utahs unique church state relationship but to really understand why and how many of the territorial policies functioned throughout the territory during this six and a half year period a basic understanding and knowledge of the school of the prophets becomes necessary scope of the study joseph smith originally established the schoolschoul of the prophets in kirtland ohio during the year 8318333.3 functioning in the fall and win- ter months during a four year period this school became the means for educating church members in both temporal and spiritual matters with its closing in thithe spring of 1837 the school of the prophets did I11 2 bifuieuteuif not again resume until brigham young reorganized it in december cf sv 1867 the school of the prophets betweebetweenn Decdecemberembr 1867 and august f 1872 developed into one of the largest church organizations in utah IJ its membership included nearly everyery adult priesthood holder consid- ered faithful and obedient to church standards beginning as a theo- logical class of the university of Desdeseretdeserctgeretcret this school became intri- cately involved in the co operative movements of 1868691868 69 and also influenced the ecoccoeconomicnomic political ardand religious affairs of the terri tory however it soon expanded to the point where difficulties aroe 4 in keeping members obediobedientnt to its rules therefore brigham young dissolved it on august 3 1872 three months later brigham young reorganized a second school of ththe prophets in salt lake city with a veryry cexclusive and limited mcmbershipmembershipmemberdhip it functioned in the realms of economic politi calcaicalicaiscalsand religious affairs until its assimilation into the salt lake united ordordrondrr in june of 187418740 president john taylor organized another school of the prophets in tafthfthe fall of 1883 in the salt lake endowment house and ir the st george tempietempleits organization adhered strictly to the formatformalfcrnnaa o-ouicutoutut lined in section 88 of the doctrine and covenahcovenatcovenantsftsats objectiveobaobj e c t ive ofofthoaththee studaudrsudr the cobjective of this study wil bcb to xamineexaminec- amine all four schools of 3 the prophets to determine their roles in utahs development because of the lack of information available concerning the schools organized x by joseph smith and john taylor th-thesethegere schools will be covered only briefly this study will deal almost exclusively with iccihcthe two schools organized by brigham young in the late 18608 and early Grant came of age, Mormonism was as much a part Aof the Utah landscape as the territory's dusty valleys and vaulting mountain walls. Young Heber met religion everywhere—in his Salt Lake City home and neighborhood, at the Tabernacle on Temple Square, in the offices of Church and civic leaders where he some­ times ventured, and certainly in his native Thirteenth Ward, one of the most innovative and organizationally developed Latter-day Saint congregations of the time. Slowly young Heber internalized his reli­ gious culture, but not before encountering the usual perils of adoles­ cence and coming of age. The process tells not only a great deal about Heber himself, but also about the beliefs, rituals, and worship patterns of early Utah Mormons. Heber J. Grant was a second-generation Mormon, born Novem­ ber 22, 1856, at Jedediah Grant's imposing Main Street home.

    D&C LESSON #23 “SEEK LEARNING, EVEN BY STUDY AND ALSO BY FAITH” INTRODUCTION: On December 27, 1833, Joseph Smith received the revelation now incorporated in the D&C as section 88. In part, the revelation instructed the Prophet in . the order of the house prepared for the presidency of the school of the prophets, established for their instruction in all things that are expedient for them, even for all the officers of the church, or in other words, those who are called to the ministry in the church, beginning at the high priests, even down to the deacons–(D&C 88:127) The revelation went on to give instructions on many aspects of the conduct of the school. In accordance with this revelation, Joseph Smith organized the School of the Propehts on the 22nd and 23rd of January, 1833. It was unusual enough at this time in Ohio for anyone to organize any kind of school. The country had not yet awakened to the importance of public education, and those fortunate enough to be educated had rarely progressed beyond the elementary level. But that someone should organize a School of the Prophets must have been considered incredible by the Gentiles. Some divinity schools had adopted the title School of the Prophets, based on Old Testament terminology, but Joseph really meant to organize a school and fill it with men possessed of the spirit of prophecy and revelation. This school was the first formal attempt of the Church to educate its members. It began quietly in an upper room on the second floor of the Newel K.

    Does Vote-by-Mail Cause Voters to Gather Information About Politics?∗ James Szewczyk Department of Political Science Emory University [email protected] June 28, 2019 Abstract In this paper, I examine the effects of vote-by-mail on voter behavior and voter knowledge. I argue that vote-by-mail electoral systems result in a more informed electorate, because voters have additional time with their ballot and access to resources to conduct research about races on the ballot that they know nothing about. I present the results of two empirical studies that support this prediction. First, I find that all-mail elections in Utah cause a 6.368 percentage point decrease in straight ticket voting. This is con- sistent with the logic that voters spend more time with their ballots when voting by mail relative to when they are voting at a polling place. Second, I estimate the effects of vote-by-mail on voter knowledge using an original repeated cross-sectional survey that was fielded during the 2018 general election in California. The research design exploits the implementation of the California Voters Choice Act (VCA), which resulted in five counties in the state switching to an election system in which all voters in the counties are sent a mail-in ballot. I find that the VCA causes an increase in voter knowledge and an increase in time that voters spend gathering information about the election. Past experience in providing reference assistance to researchers and historians di eta ted the focus of this source guide. Na r ra ti ves of ocean travel and shipboard life of Mormon emigrants and missionaries found in published and unpublished letters, reports, and journals were included. These were further limited to primary accounts of voyages across the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean to America. Accounts of voyages in large organized companies, small groups, or single Mormon individuals were included. Accounts of the ocean travels of Mormons departing from American ports to other countries were not included in this guide.

However, centuries before, prehistoric peoples lived in the area, obtaining obsidian for arrow and spear points from the Mineral Mountains. Later, the area became home to Paiute Indians. Franciscan Friars Dominguez and Escalante passed through the area in October 1776. The Mormon settlement of Beaver devel­ oped at the foot of the Tushar Mountains. In 1859 the community of Minersville was es­ tablished, and residents farmed, raised live­ stock, and mined the lead deposits there. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the Mineral Mountains and other locations in the county saw extensive mining develop­ ment, particularly in the towns of Frisco and Newhouse. Mining activities were given a boost with the completion of the Utah South­ ern Railroad to Milford in 1880. The birth­ place of both famous western outlaw Butch Cassidy and inventor of television Philo T. Farnsworth, Beaver County is rich in history, historic buildings, and mineral treasures.     St. Louis Luminary: The Latter-day Saint Experience at the Mississippi River, 1854–1855 Susan Easton Black he St. Louis Luminary, an LDS newspaper printed in St. Louis, was Tshort lived but is a key to chronicling the status of the Church on the American frontier in 1854 and 1855. Although it was only one volume, the newspaper contained fifty-two issues, each spanning four pages in length with each page divided into five columns. This translates into approximately twenty-six hundred single-spaced pages on 8½" x 11" paper. From the first issue on Wednesday, November 22, 1854, to the last issue on Saturday, December 15, 1855, its masthead proclaimed the paper a “light [shining] in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not,” a refer- ence to the gospel being published in the Luminary in the “gentile” city of St. Louis. A new book, The Best of the St. Louis Luminary, gives an in-depth history of the newspaper and its contents, and includes a DVD of scans of the entire volume of the newspaper in a searchable format. This article is excerpted from that book. Because of the years in which this newspaper was printed, it played a significant role in the national discussion of polygamy, which had not been publicly announced until 1852.1 The paper printed an unrelenting defense of polygamy against a backdrop of exaggerated reports and sensational claims that stemmed from the halls of Congress and from eastern newspapers. Editor Erastus Snow did not hesitate to confront politicians, newspaper col- umnists, or even the president of the United States on the issue.
