LACMA Public Programs September 2014
Music, Film, and Education ^ LACMA Public Programs September 2014 Talk: The Art of Wine: Wine in Music: An Afternoon with the Ahn Outdoor Session: Photography Family Dynamic: Ingrid Calame the Age of Expressionism Sook Sun Ensemble at LACMA and Shelby Roberts with Willa TALKS & COURSES Symposium: Locating Expressionism Saturday, September 6 | 10 am –4 pm Sunday, September 7 | 10 am –4 pm Free and open to the public Noted art historians and scholars convene in this two-day symposium on the occasion of the exhibition Expressionism in Germany and France: From Van Gogh to Kandinsky to shed new light on the extraordinary response of artists in Germany and France to key developments in modern art in the early 20th century. For the first time in a major museum exhibition, LACMA presents Expressionism not as a distinctly German style, but as an international movement in which artists responded with various aesthetic approaches to the work of modern masters. The German side of the story has been less well known in the United States until just recently, and LACMA's groundbreaking exhibition provides visitors and scholars alike an opportunity to explore the nuances of the interrelationship between a group of artists that includes not just Van Gogh and Kandinsky, but Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Andre Derain, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and many others. Sponsored by the museum and the Historians of German and Central European Art, topics presented explore in depth the relationship between French art and Germany artists, Cubism's impact, and the impact of non-Western art on European art from this era. -

Investigating sound: Visual and aural style from Broadchurch to Gracepoint AMANDA KEELER: Marquette University ABSTRACT Using Broadchurch and its American version Gracepoint as a case study, this article explores the aesthetic relationship between these two television programmes through an analysis of their visual and aural styles. The increasing proliferation of television-to-television adaptations and remakes necessitates revisiting the terminology to assess how it accommodates methodological approaches that extend beyond cross-cultural analyses. As narrative content and style are inextricably connected, this article attends to the complexity of employing existing terms to analyse the new version of a programme that simultaneously replicates and departs from the style and tone of its predecessor. KEYWORDS Television, adaptation, remake, format, sound, aesthetics In March 2013 ITV began airing the crime drama Broadchurch (2013–17), which television critic Mike Hale describes as ‘a moody, slow-moving, complicated crime story with damaged heroes and not much redemption to go around’ (2013). -
The Impact of Broadchurch on Businesses in West Dorset
THE IMPACT OF BROADCHURCH ON TOURISM BUSINESSES IN WEST DORSET APRIL-OCTOBER 2013 A REPORT PREPARED FOR WEST DORSET AND WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND SHARED SERVICES PARTNERSHIP JANUARY 2014 PREPARED BY DR JOANNE CONNELL The Impact of Broadchurch on Business in West Dorset 2013 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author would like to thank staff in the Tourism team at West Dorset and Weymouth & Portland Shared Services Partnership for their support in completing this project, and in particular, James Maidment for assistance in distributing the questionnaires for this project and for providing relevant information to inform this study. In addition, the contribution of businesses in completing questionnaires was much appreciated. 2 The Impact of Broadchurch on Business in West Dorset 2013 THE IMPACT OF BROADCHURCH ON BUSINESS IN WEST DORSET 2013 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Achieving viewing figures of between 7-10 million per episode during an eight-week period in early 2013, Broadchurch was a highly successful TV drama series filmed in part in and around the West Bay area. The series stimulated huge interest in the filming location from the viewing public and the national media, alongside a number of initiatives set up by West Dorset and Weymouth & Portland Shared Services Partnership to harness the marketing opportunities presented by the portrayal of the locality on national television. Anecdotal evidence identified a rise in the number of people visiting Bridport and West Bay seeking the ‘real’ Broadchurch. The profile of the area as a visitor destination increased significantly and with immediate effect. This study reports on the extent to which Broadchurch impacted on tourism-related businesses in West Bay, Bridport and the surrounding area. -

In 1998, he became Writer in Residence with GRiP Theatre Company. He later participated in the Royal National Theatre Studio, and his play Kiss Me Like You Mean It, developed and produced at Soho Theatre, was shortlisted for the Meyer-Whitworth Award. In 2001, Chibnall developed (with writer Nigel McCrery) the drama series Born and Bred— which ran on BBC 1 from 2002-2005, with Chibnall serving as Head Writer, Consulting Producer, and subsequently as Executive Producer. Chibnall later worked with the series creators of the International Emmy-award-winning BBC 1 time traveling police drama Life on Mars (2006–2007), which also won the 2007 BAFTA Audience Award. In 2005, Chibnall served as Head Writer/Co-Producer of the science-fiction drama series Torchwood—a spin-off from the cult series Doctor Who. Torchwood was nominated for Saturn and Hugo Awards, and was the recipient of the Best Drama Series award in 2007 at the BAFTA Cymru1 Awards. Chibnall returned to Doctor Who for the 2010 season, after a 1-year stint as the showrunner/developer for Law & Order: UK (co-produced by Dick Wolf Productions). Chibnall was also the showrunner/adapter of Camelot for Starz, before segueing to his luminous masterwork, the 1-hour drama series, Broadchurch, which premiered to unanimous critical acclaim in March 2013. -
