2/20/12 Rocky Anderson: Overthrow the 'dictatorship of money' | The Bloomington Alternative WAR | SOCIAL ACTIVISM | POLITICS | PEACE | OCCUPY! | ENVIRONMENT | ECONOMIC JUSTICE | ALTERNATIVE PARTIES Rocky Anderson: Overthrow the 'dictatorship of money' Justice Party candidate says it's time to occupy the elections, overturn Citizens United by Steven Higgs February 5, 2012 Rocky Anderson is always deferential to Occupy Wall Street when asked about the movement, most recently in a Jan. 31 interview with the online environmental magazine Grist. Occupy has been a "very healthy thing in this country," and there’s an "enormous convergence" between its concerns and his. But for inspiration, the Justice Party candidate points to Tahrir Square, not Zucotti Park. "One of the great inspirations for us was what we saw in much of the Arab world, where people were intent on overthrowing their nations’ dictators," he told Grist's special projects editor Greg Justice Party presidential candidate Rocky Anderson says President Obama Hanscom during a wide-ranging Q&A. The American people are disgusted with Congress, hold President Barack Obama in low regard and are ready for fundamental change.

9/23/2015 Rocky Anderson vs. NSA & FBI | 5 Spot | Salt Lake City Weekly Rocky Anderson vs. NSA & FBI Former SLC mayor recently filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government By Jerre Wroble[1] @JerreWroble[2] click to enlarge [3] Rocky Anderson When former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson reactivated his law license, it appears he also reactivated his activism. Long a civil-liberties defender, he decided to call out the federal government after reports surfaced in 2013 that the NSA and FBI allegedly conducted illegal surveillance on Salt Lake- area residents before and during the 2002 Winter Games. He recently filed a lawsuit (that two City Weekly staff joined) seeking damages from the U.S. government for unlawful invasions of privacy. Anderson explained the purpose of his lawsuit below: The Winter Olympics were so 13 years ago. Why sue now? Apparently, no one outside the NSA and FBI knew of the blanket surveillance over Salt Lake City during the 2002 Olympics until The Wall Street Journal broke the story in an article on Aug. 20, 2013. The information would probably never have been known to the public if one or more courageous sources hadn't provided the information. The 9/11 attacks took place less than six months prior to the 2002 Winter Olympics. Wasn't safety a huge issue, serving to justify such drastic measures? As mayor during the Olympics, my greatest concern, even before 9/11, was safety. The former mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah expects to launch the new Justice party this month. Photograph: Douglas C Pizac/AP As a progressive former Democrat in Utah, the most reliably conservative state in the country, Rocky Anderson is no stranger to long odds or short shrift. Among other things, Anderson has been a fierce opponent of the Iraq invasion, supports gay marriage and is an ardent environmentalist. (Think former London mayor Ken Livingstone surrounded by conservative Mormons.) As the former mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah's capital and largest city, he also has a knack for framing an agenda in search of the broadest possible audience. "We don't talk about gay liberation in Utah," he told me in an interview in 2005. "We talk about healthy families and strong communities and say that in the most intimate aspects of our lives the government ought to butt out." He served two terms before bowing out voluntarily. In the next year, he'll have to harness both that experience and savvy for the task he has now set himself: launching a new political party, the Justice party, and running for president in 2012.

Some could be influential; ballot access will be a key factor by Steven Higgs February 19, 2012 Americans' faith in the two-party system of governance may have plummeted to the point where alternative candidates and parties like Dr. Jill Stein and the Green Party, former Democratic Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson and his new Justice Party, renegade Republican Congressman Ron Paul and/or his former Libertarian Party, or the Socialist Party USA just might have a impact. "The mood of the country is toxic," Daily Beast contributor Douglas Schoen wrote on Feb. 14, 2012, echoing a growing conversation about the roles "third parties" might play in this year's presidential election. The day before, Huffington Post bloggers Sheri and Allan Rivlin posted what they called a "bold" prediction that there will be multiple alternative party surges before votes are finally cast on Nov. 6. "There will not be one 'third party' candidate in 2012," they wrote, stressing that the phrase is a misnomer anyway. "There will be lots of minor party and independent candidates for president.
