Meaning of Terms

Postulator General: The person who has the job of gathering all the pertinent documents and preparing the ‘Positio’ to present to the Holy See.

Theological Censors: Three priests who study the documents and give a theological judgement on the orthodoxy of the person presented for their consideration.

Relator of Cause: The person who is charged by the Holy See to follow the work of the postulator, give advice, and support the Cause when everything is ready.

Positio: Is the large volume (or volumes) in which a total description of the person is given, his actions, his virtues, his writings, (and the interpretation of his genuine thought).

Nihil Obstat: Literally ‘nothing prevents’ e.g. the way cleared for proceeding.

Relatio et Vota: The ‘positio’ is judged first by the historical censors and afterwards by the theological ones. They then give a relatio (report) and a vote (affirmative, negative or abstention).

Ponens: At the end when all the reports are 2/3 positive, there follows the final judgement of the Cardinals and Bishops. The job of presenting the character of the Servant of God and of defending his heroic virtues is given to a Bishop who places (ponente) the whole matter before all those present and asks for their judgement (there are eleven judges). If the judgement is largely positive, the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation of the Saints submits the matter to the Holy Father for his signature. The latter signs the ‘Decree’of heroic virtues and then the Servant of God receives the title of ‘Venerable’.
