Star Trek’s tele-transportation system could soon be here, according to high-profile Australian physicist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki; after scientists isolated the Higgs boson sub-atomic particle.

This microscopic speck - interacting with an invisible energy field that stretches throughout the universe, enabling matter to attain mass - has been given the nickname “God-particle.”

Scientific research is constantly uncovering more secrets of our universe. Yet instead of crowding God out, research keeps revealing the intricacy and interaction of his planning and his balance within all we see – and within all we are still to discover.

That’s because science and faith are allies, rather than rivals, in helping us to understand life. Science for its focus on the “how,” and faith for its focus on the “why” issues that invite healthy relationships with God and with others. For science and faith become lopsided and dangerous if they exclude each other.

Unravelling the specialised fields of science is best left to those with high IQs, while faith opens doors that even children can explore. And far from reducing our understanding, faith invites us to relax in God’s understanding of us.

Faith helps us to detect God’s love, an invisible energy field that also embraces the universe, so we may recognise each other’s value and interdependence. Yet God broke through the invisibility by sending Jesus into our world, so we may get to know him personally and accept his grace and wisdom in helping others to discover the difference that he can also make for them.

The Golden Plains Arts Trail Advisory Committee met on 18 July to discuss the future of the Golden Plains Arts Trail and to reform as Golden Plains Arts - a new, peak body for the arts in our Shire.

The meeting agreed that incorporation will enable the group to seek and manage grants, and assist in the better organisation of the Arts Trail. This will continue to be the main focus of the group, however the peak body will now be able to be involved in advocacy, organisation and promotion of all art forms.

After some discussion it was decided to retain March as the best time of year for the Arts Trail due mainly to more reliable weather and the need for consistency. Funding will be available in the 2013/14 financial year and the next Golden Plains Arts Trail will be held 15/16 March 2014.

To maintain interest, it was suggested that a series of events at artist's studios be held during 2013. An artists' picnic or similar event is planned to be held in March 2013. These events will be promoted through the Golden Plains Arts Trail website www.artstrail.com.au, Golden Plains Arts Trail Facebook page, the GP Arts newsletter and Council's website.

The new Golden Plains Arts Inc will next meet at 6.30pm, Wednesday 15 August at Meredith Community Centre, 4 Russell Street, Meredith. New people are encouraged to participate and take on roles, so do feel free to come along.

CATHERINE KING MP URGES NOMINATIONS FOR AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS

The Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, today encouraged individuals and organisations across Ballarat and region to shine a light on people whose achievements or contributions they admire by nominating them for an Australian of the Year Award.

“The next Australians of the Year could be people living in our part of the world and I encourage everyone to look for the true heroes in our community, the people who inspire and motivate us, and show them that we appreciate and admire them,” Ms King said.

“I know that we have people here who fit the bill. Let’s tell the rest of Australia about them.” Anyone can submit a nomination and have a say in who should be honoured. People can nominate someone they know in one of the following categories:

Australian of the Year Senior Australian of the Year (those aged 60 years or over) Young Australian of the Year (ages 16 to 30) Australia’s Local Hero

Ms King said it is an opportunity for local heroes and heroines to join the likes of last year’s winners: Geoffrey Rush (Australian of the Year), Laurie Baymarrwangga (Senior Australian of the Year), Marita Cheng (Young Australian of the Year) and Lynne Sawyers (Australia’s Local Hero).

Nominations close on 31 August 2012.
