Allegany County Government Official Proclamation Sam Perlozzo Week WHEREAS, Samuel Benedict Perlozzo, a native of Allegany County, was raised in Cumberland - - - Perlozzo was respected as a natural athlete and was a baseball and football star at Bishop Walsh; and WHEREAS, Perlozzo was awarded a full baseball scholarship to George Washington University in Washington, DC, and excelled there - - - during his collegiate years Perlozzo was an Academic All-American, led the nation in stolen bases, and was named the baseball team’s MVP; and WHEREAS, Perlozzo graduated from GW in 1973 and was inducted into GW’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and GW’s Sports Executive Hall of Fame in 2007; and WHEREAS, Perlozzo made his major-league baseball debut on September 13, 1977, with the Minnesota Twins and, due to physical injuries, played his last major-league baseball game as a San Diego Padre on September 13, 1979; and WHEREAS, described as “a solid baseball man” and “a very committed baseball professional,” Perlozzo joined the Baltimore Orioles in 1996 as the Third Base Coach and became the Bench Coach in 2001; and WHEREAS, “a dream come true,” the pinnacle of Perlozzo’s professional baseball career was being named the Manager of the Baltimore Orioles, a leadership position he held from August 2005 to June 2007; and WHEREAS, Perlozzo coached in three All-Star Games and two World Series - - - he was the Third Base Coach for the 1990 World Series Champions, the Cincinnati Reds - - - the Reds swept the World Series in four games winning over the defending champions and heavily favored Oakland Athletics; and WHEREAS, Perlozzo is a record six-time winner of the top award given by the Dapper Dan Club of Allegany County: The George W. Stevenson - Nicholas A. Perlozzo Memorial Award - - - Perlozzo has declared “I love the game,” and brought and continues to bring positive national media attention to Allegany County. NOW THEREFORE, we, The Board of County Commissioners, wish to highly commend Samuel Benedict Perlozzo, highlight his life, and proclaim the first week of the 2017 professional baseball season, Sunday, April 2, to Saturday, April 8, as Sam Perlozzo Week in Allegany County and encourage all individuals to reflect on the achievements and contributions of this native of Allegany County. Morris also played in the College World Series for the University of Michigan, and knows how special it is for these young ballplayers to be playing in their own World Series. In his 1990 World Series championship season, Morris hit .340 on the year, which, at the time, was the third-highest batting average by a rookie in 50 years. His sacrifice fly in Game 4 turned out to be the series-winning RBI. He retired from playing in 2000 with a career batting average of .304. From 2012 until 2016, he was the director of professional scouting for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Steilberg, architect Lake Merritt has been the gem of the city from Oakland’s early days. From Victorian mansions to high-rise apartments and office buildings, the Lake has always been a desirable location for living, working and playing. As mayor of Oakland, Samuel Merritt had a dam built across this arm of the San Antonio Slough in 1869, creating the lake and establishing the first National Wildlife Refuge in 1870. In 1906 Mayor Frank Mott began to develop Lakeside Park, purchasing the Camron-Stanford House and adding the Boat House, the Canoe House, the McElroy Fountain, and the Edoff Memorial Bandstand within the next 12 years. The Embarcadero Pergola and Colonnade were designed by Walter Steilberg in 1912 in a Mediterranean style. The Lawn Bowling Clubhouse, Necklace of Lights, Rotary Natural Science Center and Duck Islands and Children’s Fairyland are later additions to the Lake’s wonderful amenities. Most recently, gondola rides on the lake offer a new Mediterranean touch. Gondola Servizio offers an authentic Italian experience during their cruises. Their charming gondoliers have learned Venetian rowing, traditional songs, history and legends to combine both an informative and entertaining experience for all passengers.
