Sam Perlozzo Week

WHEREAS, Samuel Benedict Perlozzo, a native of Allegany County, was raised in Cumberland - - - Perlozzo was respected as a natural athlete and was a baseball and football star at Bishop Walsh; and

WHEREAS, Perlozzo was awarded a full baseball scholarship to George Washington University in Washington, DC, and excelled there - - - during his collegiate years Perlozzo was an Academic All-American, led the nation in stolen bases, and was named the baseball team’s MVP; and

WHEREAS, Perlozzo graduated from GW in 1973 and was inducted into GW’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and GW’s Sports Executive Hall of Fame in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Perlozzo made his major-league baseball debut on September 13, 1977, with the and, due to physical injuries, played his last major-league baseball game as a San Diego Padre on September 13, 1979; and

WHEREAS, described as “a solid baseball man” and “a very committed baseball professional,” Perlozzo joined the in 1996 as the Third Base Coach and became the Bench Coach in 2001; and

WHEREAS, “a dream come true,” the pinnacle of Perlozzo’s professional baseball career was being named the of the Baltimore Orioles, a leadership position he held from August 2005 to June 2007; and

WHEREAS, Perlozzo coached in three All-Star Games and two - - - he was the Third Base Coach for the Champions, the Reds - - - the Reds swept the World Series in four games winning over the defending champions and heavily favored ; and

WHEREAS, Perlozzo is a record six-time winner of the top award given by the Dapper Dan Club of Allegany County: The George W. Stevenson - Nicholas A. Perlozzo Memorial Award - - - Perlozzo has declared “I love the game,” and brought and continues to bring positive national media attention to Allegany County.

NOW THEREFORE, we, The Board of County Commissioners, wish to highly commend Samuel Benedict Perlozzo, highlight his life, and proclaim the first week of the 2017 professional baseball season, Sunday, April 2, to Saturday, April 8, as Week in Allegany County and encourage all individuals to reflect on the achievements and contributions of this native of Allegany County.
