CLASSICAL AND FOLK DANCES IN INDIAN CULTURE Palkalai Chemmal Dr ANANDA BALAYOGI BHAVANANI Chairman: Yoganjali Natyalayam, Pondicherry. INTRODUCTION: Dance in India comprises the varied styles of dances and as with other aspects of Indian culture, different forms of dances originated in different parts of India, developed according to the local traditions and also imbibed elements from other parts of the country. These dance forms emerged from Indian traditions, epics and mythology. Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy for performing arts, recognizes eight distinctive traditional dances as Indian classical dances, which might have origin in religious activities of distant past. These are: Bharatanatyam- Tamil Nadu Kathak- Uttar Pradesh Kathakali- Kerala Kuchipudi- Andhra Pradesh Manipuri-Manipur Mohiniyattam-Kerala Odissi-Odisha Sattriya-Assam Folk dances are numerous in number and style, and vary according to the local tradition of the respective state, ethnic or geographic regions. Contemporary dances include refined and experimental fusions of classical, folk and Western forms. Dancing traditions of India have influence not only over the dances in the whole of South Asia, but on the dancing forms of South East Asia as well. In modern times, the presentation of Indian dance styles in films (Bollywood dancing) has exposed the range of dance in India to a global audience. In ancient India, dance was usually a functional activity dedicated to worship, entertainment or leisure. Dancers usually performed in temples, on festive occasions and seasonal harvests. Dance was performed on a regular basis before deities as a form of worship. Even in modern India, deities are invoked through religious folk dance forms from ancient times. -

ISSN. 0972 - 8406 The NEHU Journal, Vol XIII, No. 1, January-June 2015 , pp. 21-31 Shadows Speak: A Need to Revive the Shadow Theatres of India ARTI N IRMAL 1 Abstract The Shadow Theatre or Shadow Puppetry or ‘Chhaya Natak’ of India is an ancient yet powerful example of folk theatre. On the basis of available evidences it has been found to be a predecessor of human theatre. This ancient form of leather puppetry in India is surviving through ages but it is sad to note that today in the age of film, television and internet, it is merely alive in few regions in India. Since these ‘Shadow Theatres’ signify our Indian culture, it becomes our duty to preserve and promote such art forms for generations to come. Against this background, the present paper aims to highlight the significance of shadow theatres in modern India with special reference to ‘Ravana Chhaya’ of Orissa. Keywords: Folk Theatre, Shadow Theatre, Leather Puppets, Ravana Chhaya, Liminal Zone. hadow Theatre is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulate figures to create the impression of moving Shumans. Shadows might seem transitory and temporary in nature, but they can be a powerful mode of artistic and theatrical representation too, if utilized artistically. Technologically, in Shadow Theatre the articulated figures are illuminated from behind the screen to create an illusion of moving characters. And then this illusion is adjusted skillfully to depict various stories from the Ramayana , the Mahabharata , the Puranas , and the folktales. In this way, they not only enhance our understanding of the Indian cultural tradition but also cast a profound social appeal on the viewers. -

India is known for its rich cultural heritage has harnessed the energy of theatrical forms since the inception of its civilization. A rich cultural heritage of almost 3000 years has been the nurturing ground for Theatre and its Folk forms. Emerging after Greek and Roman theatre, Sanskrit theatre closely associated with primordial rituals, is the earliest form of Indian Theatre. Ascribed to Bharat Muni, ‘Natya Sastra or Natyashastra’2 is considered to be the initial and most elaborate treatise on dramaturgy and art of theatre in the world. It gives the detailed account of Indian theatre’s divine origin and expounds Rasa. This text becomes the basis of the classical Sanskrit theatre in India. Sanskrit Theatre was nourished by pre-eminent play-wrights like Bhasa, Kalidasa, Shudraka, Vishakadatta, Bhavabhuti and Harsha.3 This body of works which were sophisticated in its form and thematic content can be equaled in its range and influence with the dramatic yield of other prosperous theatre traditions of the world like ancient Greek theatre and Elizabethan theatre. -

Professor In Sanskrit PERFORMING ARTS • KOODIYATTAM • CHAKYAR KOOTHU • NANGIAR KOOTHU • KRISHNANATTAM KOODIYATTAM Koodiyattam, also transliterated as Kutiyattam, is a traditional performing artform in the state of Kerala, India. It is a combination of ancient Sanskrit theatre with elements of Koothu, a Malayalam performing art which is as old as Sangam era. It is officially recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Koodiyattam (Kutiyattam), meaning "combined acting" in Malayalam, combines Sanskrit theatre performance with elements of traditional Koothu. It is traditionally performed in temple theatres known as Koothambalams. It is the only surviving art form that uses drama from ancient Sanskrit theatre. It has a documented history of a thousand years in Kerala, but its origins are unknown. Koodiyattam and Chakyar Koothu were among the dramatized dance worship services in the temples of ancient India, particularly Kerala. Both Koodiyattam and Chakyar Koothu originated from ancient south Indian artform Koothu which is mentioned several times in ancient Sangam literature, and the epigraphs of the subsequent Pallava, Pandiyan, Chera, and Chola periods. Inscriptions related to Koothu can be seen in temples at Tanjore, Tiruvidaimaruthur, Vedaranyam, Tiruvarur, and Omampuliyur. They were treated as an integral part of worship services, alongside the singing of Tevaram and Prabandam hymns. MIZHAVU Traditionally, the main musical instru ments used in Koodi yattam are mizhavu, kuzhitalam, edakka, k urumkuzhal, and sankhu. Mizhavu, the most prominent of these is a percussion instrument that is played by a person of the Ambalavas Nambiar caste, accom panied by Nangyaramma playing the kuzhithalam (a type of cymbal). -

Ancient Sangam literature, particularly the epic Shilppadhikaram, gives clues to the rich theatre culture of south India. When the Sanskrit theatre began to decline in northern India, It travelled to the south and flourished there from 8th century until the present. Koodiyattam is the local style of staging Sanskrit plays that has been flourishing in the temple theatres of Kerala since the 10th century. It is considered to have been derived from a much earlier from known as Keota or chalkier Keota. The classical dramatic traditions remained confined to theatres called Koothambalams, while the folk tradition manifested in the ritualistic and non-ritualistic theatrical forms such as Teyyam, Kali dance-drama and Bhuta dances. Most often the classical and the folk forms mingled to create varied new forms such as Kathakali, Bhagwat Mela, Kuchipudi, Terukoothu, Yakshagana, Veedhi Bhagwatam and Chakkiyar Koothu.This paper is a research study of the theatre forms of south India Key words: Sangam, Shilppadhikaram, Koodiyattam, Teyyam, Kathakali, Bhagwat Mela, Kuchipudi, Terukoothu, Yakshagana, Veedhi Bhagwatam and Chakkiyar Koothu.
