APPROVED WARRICK COUNTY SCHOOL CORPORATION SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES JUNE 21, 2010 The Warrick County Board of School Trustees met in regular session on June 21, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Center with all members present. President Dorothy Kroeger called the meeting to order. A moment of silence was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Recognition of Retiring Board Member Eric Conner Superintendent Brad Schneider said it is an honor to recognize Mr. Eric Conner, who has served on the Board of School Trustees for 16 consecutive years. He was elected in May of 1994, and started his term in July of 1994. Mr. Conner served as Board President from July 1998 through June 2000. He is currently Vice-President of the Board. Many accomplishments, improvements, and changes have taken place during Mr. Conner’s tenure on the Board. Some of these accomplishments include renovations and additions to many of our schools, the building of Castle South Middle School, moving Warrick County schools to the middle school concept, and continued advances in technology including the wireless network, security cameras which will be in all buildings by the end of the summer, and two-door secure entry-ways at schools involved in renovation projects. On the Curriculum & Policy Committee, he helped establish the No Tobacco Policy for our entire school corporation. Also, he was instrumental in creation of the non-traditional student education which takes place at the Warrick Education Center and the purchase of the new building and grounds for the Warrick Education Center. During Mr. Conner’s tenure, Warrick County School Corporation students continued to succeed and achieve some of the highest accomplishments on the ISTEP tests to date. Superintendent Schneider presented Mr. Conner with a plaque honoring his years of service as Board President, and a clock commemorating his years of service on the Board. Recognition of past Board President Alvin Holder Superintendent Schneider next recognized Mr. Alvin Holder for his past service as Board President from July 2000 through June of 2005. Recognition of Retirees Superintendent Schneider first recognized Dr. John Helfen, retiring Executive Director of the Gibson-Pike-Warrick Special Education Cooperative. He said Dr. Helfen has always been considered a Warrick County administrator. Dr. Helfen has been the only director of the GPW, being named to that position in l973, and serving for 37 years. Dr. Helfen has been a great advocate for all students, but especially special needs students in the Warrick County School Corporation. Board President Dorothy Kroeger presented each retiree with a clock that had an engraved plate stating their years of educational service to the Warrick County School Corporation. He thanked them for their professional and dedicated service. Superintendent Schneider next recognized the following support staff retirees and Board President Dorothy Kroeger presented each retiree with a clock that had an engraved plate stating their years of service to the Warrick County School Corporation. Anne Rust, President of the Warrick County Teachers Association, came forward and congratulated Mr. Eric Conner and Dr. John Helfen. She next recognized the retiring teachers for their dedicated service to the students of Warrick County. She also recognized that many of these retirees also served as dedicated association representatives. She next acknowledged the support staff retirees, and the over 1000 years of combined service by all of these retirees. She thanked all of these retirees on behalf of the Warrick County Teachers Association. President Dorothy Kroeger also added her thanks to all retirees for their dedicated service to the Warrick County School Corporation Consideration of Routine Items A motion was made by Gary Hachmeister and seconded by Ben Stilwell to approve the following Routine Items, as listed: A. Approve the minutes of the School Board meeting of June 7, 2010. B. Approve Claims 1 - 229 and sign the docket. C. Approve the Requests for Professional Leave. Motion carried. Consideration of Items for Board Action A. A motion was made by Candace Nance and seconded by Brenda Metzger to grant permission to advertise the 2011 budget, which includes the Capital Projects and Bus Replacement Plans, as presented. Motion carried. B. A motion was made by Eric Conner and seconded by Candace Nance to approve change order PR-6 to replace 10 exterior doors with hardware at Castle High School School Board Minutes – June 21, 2010 – Page Four at a cost of $44,985.31, and change order PR-8 to renovate 9 entry-ways at Castle High School at a cost of $52,935.19, as presented. Motion carried. C. A motion was made by Candace Nance and seconded by Jim Eifler to grant permission to advertise for bids for up to sixty-eight (68) bus routes with the flexibility to go to a four (4) or six (6) year contract, as presented. Motion carried. D. A motion was made by Candace Nance and seconded by Eric Conner to approve the transfer of Bus Route #46 from Carolyn Smith to Edwin Helms, as presented. Motion carried. Consideration of Personnel Recommendations Mr. Rick Reid, Director of Personnel, presented recommendations for employment of personnel. Upon his recommendation: A. A motion was made by Candace Nance and seconded by Brenda Metzger to employ Brandon Kline as a language arts teacher at Castle High School beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Motion carried. B. A motion was made by Ben Stilwell and seconded by Candace Nance to employ Heidi Slavkin as a language arts teacher at Castle High School beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Motion carried. C. A motion was made by Candace Nance and seconded by Gary Hachmeister to employ Brian Kilgour as an industrial technology teacher at Boonville High School beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Motion carried. D. A motion was made by Candace Nance and seconded by Brenda Metzger to employ Jacob Scheller as a language arts teacher at Boonville High School beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Motion carried. E. A motion was made by Brenda Metzger and seconded by Ben Stilwell to employ Lauren Ellmers as the 21 st CCLC Site Coordinator at Chandler Elementary School beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Motion carried. Mr. Rick Reid reported on the following resignations: A. Jennifer McKinney – Site Coordinator, employed through the 21 st Century Learning Center Grant for 2010-2014, effective Friday, June 11, 2010. B. Melissa Byers, 3.75-hour cafeteria employee at Castle North Middle School, effective Wednesday, June 16, 2010. C Lauri Frailley, 6.5-hour cafeteria employee at John H. Castle Elementary School, effective Thursday, July 1, 2010. Mr. Rick Reid next reported on the following retirement: Wanda Johnson, Library Aide at Tennyson/Yankeetown Elementary Schools, effective at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
