Abstract Orofacial Clefts (OFC) are common congenital facial anomalies. The study seeks to determine the status of care for OFC patients in Ghana. Currently, in addition to the Ministry of Health, there are six Non-Governmental Organizations, which are dedicated to the provision of logistics for the management of cleft patients. As it is possible there could be OFC endemic areas in Ghana, sensitization of the population of the condition and management of this anomaly should be promoted. Persons of OFCs are faced with known challenges, which result in negative self-image that affect their quality of life. Hence educating the general public, in particular pregnant women who access antenatal care in health facilities may reduce ill effects associated with the anomaly. Genetic studies of the anomaly should also be encouraged to help decrease the incidence. Underserved patients with these facial differences lack access to medical care, surgical expertise, prenatal care, or psychological support. Moreover, the disease results in significant economic strains on patients and their families. While surgical outreach programs have attempted to fill this void, significant challenges facing international comprehensive cleft care persist. Objective: Propose a path toward international sustainable cleft care based on the Global Smile Foundation experience. Results: International sustainable comprehensive cleft care can be achieved by regulating surgical outreach programs. Regulation of these missions would ensure standardized care and encourage stakeholders to cooperate and adequately allocate funding and resources. Capacity building can be achieved through “diagonal” cleft care delivery models, multidisciplinary workshops, fellowship programs, research and quality assurance, as well as leveraging emerging technologies such as Augmented Reality. Conclusion: International comprehensive cleft care requires continuous collaborative efforts between visiting and local teams as well as international and national organizations. Standardizing and regulating current practices as well as promoting capacity building initiatives can contribute to sustainable cleft care.

    Transforming Faces Media Kit TRANSFORMING FACES: AN INTRODUCTION Transforming Faces, Transforming Lives Transforming Faces is a Canadian charity that provides free multi-disciplinary cleft care for children and adults in developing countries. We work in partnership with local cleft specialists, building and funding community-based medical teams that are committed to meeting all the needs of children with cleft lip and palate and their families. We advocate strongly for comprehensive cleft care, meaning wherever possible our cleft teams include: audiologists, dentists, nurse co-ordinators, orthodontists, social workers, speech therapists and surgeons. Why We Are Unique • Transforming Faces is dedicated to closing the gap in cleft care. • We know every child is beautiful – before and after their cleft care. • We see first-hand how our unique long-term approach, which is supported by the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA) and hospitals in North America, transforms the lives of children born with cleft lip and palate. • A private charitable foundation funds our low administrative costs, so 100% of all donations are used to support and transform children’s lives. Donations of $200+ or $20/month are also matched by a private charitable foundation. Results • Transforming Faces is currently working with local partners in Argentina, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Peru, Laos and Thailand. • Since its inception in 1999, we have transformed the lives of over 10,000 children and adults with cleft lip and palate.
