Roland White Band
The Roland White Band Roland White Bluegrass mandolin master Roland White has played in some of the most influential and popular groups in the music's history, and has played a notable part in creating that history. Springing from a large family of musicians, Roland and his younger brothers Eric and Clarence first played together as youngsters in their native Maine. Moving to southern California in 1955, The Country Boys (later to become The Kentucky Colonels) won talent contests, appeared on local television shows and even landed appearances on The Andy Griffith Show. They toured the country during the folk music boom of the early 60's, creating a sensation among coffeehouse, festival and college audiences with their instrumental virtuosity, traditional brother vocal harmonies and rhythmic innovations. The Kentucky Colonels' influence far exceeded the band's short tenure as an active band. Their "Appalachian Swing" album remains one of the most important albums of that era, a landmark in the history of bluegrass. Moving from The Kentucky Colonels into a position as guitarist for Bill Monroe in the late 60's, Roland absorbed the traditional feel and repertoire from his mentor, the Father Of Bluegrass, which remains a strong element in his music today. From Monroe's band, Roland joined that of another bluegrass pioneer, Lester Flatt, playing mandolin and recording several albums as a member of The Nashville Grass from 1969-1973. In 1973 a short-lived reunion of The White Brothers was brought to an untimely end due to Clarence White's tragic death. Of this brief reunion came two concert recordings that capture the excitement of the White Brothers' sound fully matured, after Clarence's excursions in country rock with the Byrds and Roland's studies with the Monroe and Flatt. -

So with that introduction, we are pleased to announce that as of this issue, the gazette formerly known as AllAboutJazz-New York will now be called The New York City Jazz Record. It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. But, echoing Shakespeare’s idea, the change in name Interview: Johnny Mandel will have no impact whatsoever on our continuing mission to explore new worlds 6 by Marcia Hillman and new civilizations...oh wait, wrong mission...to support the New York City and international jazz communities. Not only is the 26th the late trumpeter’s birthday but many of his most enduring works were New York@Night recorded during this month, including the Charlie Parker All-Stars (1948); the 4 Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet’s run in Paris (1949), most of the Workin’, Steamin’ and Relaxin’ triumvirate by the quintet with John Coltrane (1956), Miles Interview: Vince Giordano Ahead and At Carnegie Hall, both with the Gil Evans Orchestra (1957 and 1961 6 by Michael Hittman respectively); and the bulk of Miles in the Sky (1968). Now in May 2008, another chapter to the Miles Legacy will be written with an ambitious concert at Town Artist Feature: George Garzone Hall May 9th, “Miles From India”. A companion concert to a just-released album 7 by Matthew Miller of the same name, the concert brings together musicians who played with the legend throughout his career as well as a number of classical Indian musicians for Label Spotlight: Les Disques Victo what is billed as a “cross-cultural summit meeting”. Our Encore this month, 8 by Kurt Gottschalk guitarist Pete Cosey, is participating in what is sure to be a monumental event. Eric Lugosch Bio Musical Beginnings Eric’s involvement with music started before he ever played the guitar. As a youngster, he was a first soprano in the Philadelphia Boys’ Choir. His mom sang in nightclubs and played piano. “She was French and would burlesque around the house imitating Edith Piaf and singing French folk songs,” Eric muses. Eric’s oldest brother was influential early on and seeded his interests in music. “While my brother was in Vietnam, I had access to his record collection - the jazz greats like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Dave Brubeck.” It was after his brother returned and started to take guitar lessons, that Eric began to play. “I would sneak into his room, pick up his guitar, and figure out the tabs on my own. That was my introduction to Mississippi John Hurt, Reverend Gary Davis, Doc Watson and Pete Seeger.” Achievements In 1983 Eric won third place at the prestigious National Fingerpicking Championship in Winfield, Kansas. Inspired by his competitors, he came back the next year along with some of his original compositions and won first place. At age 25, he was the youngest winner at the time. The win gave a boost to his burgeoning career as a fingerstyle guitarist, which launched him into the national, and later international, spotlight. Soon after, Eric released his first recording, Strike, which is an original suite for guitar, flute and bass. Then in 1988, Eric moved from Philadelphia to the Midwest and started teaching at the renowned Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago where he remained for 25 years teaching fingerstyle guitar classes and private lessons.
