Environmental changes have led to cellular adjustment and adaptation in plant growth. External factors have, for example, influenced the growth pattern of Gynura procumbens plants and led to production of specific secondary metabolite internally for the purpose of differentiation and conditional interaction. These developmental patterns and production of metabolites are expressional characteristics of the plant, and so growers can have only a restricted range of movement or limited control over their reaction to environmental changes compared to their reaction to human or animal interactions. Even though metabolite production is pervasive among the plants, the need to explore abiotic control strategies for regulating the patterns of growth of Gynura procumbens as well as their accumulation of metabolites has been shown to be significant in recent studies of plant-abiotic interactions. Mountains of the Moon
MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON Some names just resonate with mystery and one such place that does that for me is the Rwenzori or Mountains of the Moon, a spectacular equatorial range that straddles Uganda and the DRC. It has that ‘heart of Africa’ appeal, truly somewhere off the beaten path - and given the effort required to get there it’s no surprise so few tourists come here. Without doubt it is the domain of the serious trekker and climber, the trails penetrate dense mossy forests and climb steeply to breathless heights above the treeline, where the reward is some of the most remarkable alpine flora to be found anywhere. I undertook my own journey with a university friend. We walked first through sweaty sub-tropical forests where the striking orange tubes of Scadoxus cyrtanthiflorus stood out from the dense undergrowth. Heavy bamboo dominated above this and then it was into the subalpine zone where the otherworldly stuff began. Gorgeous broad corymbs of Helichrysum formosissimum appeared, with silvery phyllaries blushed pink - surely the ultimate everlasting daisy. Then we reached the alpine zone. Dendrosenecio adnivalis Interestingly, as with the Espletia of the Scadoxus cyrtanthiflorus northern Andes, the alpine equivalent here also belongs to Asteraceae. The dominant species in the Rwenzori (with similar species in other east African mountains) Dendrosenecio adnivalis, a magnificent plant that formed dense forests in places, clothing whole mountainsides. The most obvious difference between the two genera is Dendrosenecio branch and Espletia do not. I remember seeing a specimen of a Dendrosenecio at Kew, sitting beneath a strong sunlamp. -

KNox2 AND ROBERT R, KOWAL Herbarium and Department of Biology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-1048; and Department of Botany, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706-1981 The gametophytic chromosome number for the giant senecios (Asteraceae, Senecioneae, Dendrosenecio) is n = 50, and for the giant lobelias (Lobeliaceae, Lobelia subgenus Tupa section Rhynchopetalumi it is n = 14. Previous sporophytic counts are generally verified, but earlier reports for the giant senecios of2n = 20 and ca. 80, the bases for claims ofintraspecific polyploidy, are unsubstantiated. The 14 new counts for the giant senecios and the ten new counts for the giant lobelias are the first garnetophytic records for these plants and include the first reports for six and four taxa, respectively, for the two groups. Only five of the II species of giant senecio and three of the 21 species of giant lobelia from eastern Africa remain uncounted. Although both groups are polyploid, the former presumably decaploid and the latter more certainly tetraploid, their adaptive radiations involved no further change in chromosome number. The cytological uniformity within each group, while providing circumstantial evidence ofmonophyly and simplifying interpretations ofcladistic analyses, provides neither positive nor negative support for a possible role of polyploidy in evolving the giant-rosette growth-form. It is an efficient technology that performs extraction and leaves none or less organic residues compared to conventional processes. Recently, the simulation and prediction of process output from supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) have been determined using intelligent system predictive tools, such as artificial neural networks. The prediction of the set of results from SFE for designing and scale up purposes is because apart from reducing the usage of extraction solvent, and the energy and time of the process, it can also generate a solution for problems that a complex mathematical model cannot solve. For example, the prediction of solubility is important because this particular fundamental value contributes to the optimizing process. A neural network is considered as one of the artificially intelligent systems, and furthermore a key technology in Industry 4.0. -

Beckl, H. Rehder2, E.D. Schulze3 and J.O. Kokwar04 ABSTRACT The afroalpine vegetation of Mt. Elgon was studied along an altitudinal transect ranging from the montane forest up to the summit of koitoboss (13,880 ft.).• Since, due to recurrent fires, the boundary between the lower Ericaceous and the alpine belt is an interlocking one, both vegetation girdles were encompassed in the studies. The Ericaceous belt can be divided into a woodland and bush storey. The former, with respect to the species encountered represents a transition zone from the montane forest to the microphyllous bush vegetation. The latter was designated as Ericaceous bush and exhibits various indications of former fires, thus rather reflecting different stages of regeneration than a climax vegetation. Within the alpine belt tussock grassland and two types of Carex bog form a lower storey. The vegetation of the upper zone is characterized by a field layer of predominantly Alchemi/la elgonensis and thus could be address as Alchemilla scrub. However, according to the accompanying species several types ofthis crub were distinguished: a Hel;chrysum scrub which was found on shallow soil covering volcanic rock slabs; an Euryops bush, bordering the so-called Dendrosenecio woodland vegetation. The latter was divided into a Dendrosenecio elgonensis-Community on moist soil and a Dendrosenecio barbatipes-Community covering the well-drained steeper slopes of the caldera rim. INTRODUCTION Mt. Elgon (14, 178ft.) is one ofthe seven East African high mountains exhibiting alpine vegetation. -

ABUL HASSAN Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh Keywords: Gynura nepalensis; New record; Bangladesh. A perennial, terrestrial herb with yellow flowers was collected from Kendua under Netrokona district of Bangladesh in the month of March 2006 by a research student of the Department of Chemistry, Dhaka University and later from Comilla district in 2011, which after critical studies, has been identified as Gynura nepalensis DC., by referring to the descriptions of Hooker (1882), Davis (1979) and Hajra et al. (1995). The genus Gynura Cass. consists of about 40 species distributed in tropical Asia and Africa (Airy-Shaw, 1897). From Indian subcontinemt, Gynura nepalensis was earlier reported by Hooker (1882) from temperate Himalaya and Hajra et al. (1995) from Himalayas and the north-east regions of India. As this genus and any species belonging to the genus was not reported earlier in any of the relevant floristic literature covering Bangladesh territory, viz., Prain (1903), Heinig (1925), Cowan (1928), Raizada (1941), Datta and Mitra (1953), Sinclair (1956), Khan and Banu (1972), Khan and Hassan (1984), Khan et al. (1994), Mia and Khan (1995), Rahman and Hassan (1995), Rahman and Uddin (1997), Uddin et al. (1998), Rashid et al. (2000), Khan and Huq (2001), Uddin et al. (2003), Rahman (2004a, b) and Ahmed et al. (2008), it is therefore being reported as a new generic and species record for Bangladesh. -

Tantri Liris Nareswari, Triana Hertiani* Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Sekip Utara, 55281 Yogyakarta, Indonesia ABSTRACT Sambung Nyawa leaves (Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr has been widely used as herbal medicine which requires a quality improvement of the dry extract for industrial production. Extraction solvent optimization is one key factor which determines the quality. This research aims was to find out the optimal ethanol-water composition as extraction solvent by using Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method of which the total phenolics, total flavonoids and DPPH radical scavenging activity were used as quality parameters. Dried leaves as raw materials were pulverized and screened at Mesh 60, macerated (1:5) with ethanol-water compositition as 1:0; 0.7:0.3; and 0.5:0.5v/v, shaked for 24h, filtered. The procedure was repeated twice. Filtrates were collected of which lactose were added (1:2)w/w and spray dried at 100°C for 30min. Dried extracts yielded were evaluated the quality by using SLD method of which the total phenolics, total flavonoids as well as DPPH radical scavenging activity were used as parameters. Optimal SLD response was revealed at the ethanol:water composition of 0.66:0.34-0.75:0.25v/v (Rtotal>0.9).
