Distribution, biology and ecology of Papilio alexanor ESPER 1799 in the south-western alps (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) Abstract: Recently quite insufficient information about the biology of Papi lio alexanor ESPER 1799 has been published. The authors critically provide an exhaustive consideration of distribution, habitat structure and life history of this species in the south-western alpine regions of France and Italy. Careful investigation of several already known larval host plants shows that caterpillars of almost every population in this area feed on Ptychotis saxi- Nachr. entomol. Ver. The study is based on precise field observations during the last ten years which confirm and complete the present knowledge of the species’ life history in relation to the available French literature. In addition, subspecific division is discussed and some short comments on rearing are given. Three new synonymies are given: P. alexanor radighieri SALA & BOLLINO 1991 of Papilio alexanor alexanor ESPER 1799, and P. a. graecus SCHMIDT 1989 and P. a. eitschber- geri S a l a & BOLLINO 1992 of P. a. judaeus St a u d in g e r [1894], Einleitung Diese Falterart, 1798 von DE PRUNNER nach Exemplaren von Nizza ur sprünglich als Papilio polidamas benannt, mußte ein Jahr später in Papi lio alexanor umbenannt werden, da der vorherige Name bereits für einen anderen Vertreter der Gattung vergeben worden war. B . B e r n a r d i 1959, L o r it z 1960, 1961, R e c h e 1978, N e l 1991), aber auch vereinzelt im deutschsprachigen Raum (z. B. KAHLHEBER 1976, S m id 1990). So spiegeln z. Jerusalem, Israel) tmaccabaeus STAUDINGER [1892] (primäres Homonym von Papilio macareus maccabaeus Staudinger 1889) syn. magna V erity 1911 (TL: Dalmatien) syn. attica V erity 1911 (TL: Attika, Griechenland) syn. adriatica Schawerda [1913] (TL: vic. In summer 2020, seventyfive caterpillars of this rare and emblematic species have been found in the upper Susa Valley (Cot- tian Alps) on Ptychotis saxifraga, at relatively high altitude. The analysis of the observations carried out on a random sample of host plants suggest similar ecology but delayed phenology, compared to that reported for other Italian populations. Verovnik & V. Svara Abstract Nearly five decades have passed since the last confirmed occurrence of the Southern Swallowtail ( Papilio alexanor Esper, 1799) in Croatia. The species was not observed at any of the historical sites, but we found it at seven new sites between Split and the region south of the Neretva River. The habitat is very restricted and characterised by steep limestone rock faces with abundance of the larval host plant Opopanax chironium (L.) Koch. Due to severe fragmentation and continuing decline inferred from extinction of the species in historically known locations we consider the species as vulnerable (VU) in Croatia according to IUCN criteria. Dabrowski ul. Grabowskiego 8/4, 31-126 Krakow, Poland At the present time, a considerable part of Europe may be regarded as an 'ecological deserf. Large areas of natural primeval ecosystems have been transformed, over hundreds or even thousands of years, into monocultu- res or have been covered with stone, concrete or asphalt. A rieh autochtonic lepidopterofauna consequently perished and was replaced by a few species of particular adaptive abilities (Dabrowski, 1977). The unceasing increase in the application of new chemicals for plant protection and as fertilizers, and of industrial wastes etc. not only pollutes the environment in the neighbourhood of the source, but also contributes actively to the general degradation of the nature reserves, national parks and other unspoilt areas of Europe, which form a very poor network as it is. The explosion of mass tourism and the pressure from inhabitants of urbanised and industrialized agglomerations searching for new recreatio- nal areas do not promise well for the maintenance of these areas, especially those that are too small and have no effective protective zones (Dabrowski, 1979). In Europe, economic and consumptive interests are of an absolute priority while the protection of our natural environment, even with the support of the greatest scientific authorities, remains a losing battle. The problems of protecting small and insignificant species such as butterflies, are especially difficult. It is practically impossible to count on the understanding of private owners or institutions and to stop them going ahead with even small economic projects in favour of saving a butterfly population (A lberti, 1979).

Trip report 2010 Day 1: 14th June– Arrival in Kalavryta We set off on a leisurely drive up from Kalamata at around lunchtime, arriving in Kalavryta on the slopes of Mount Chelmos during the late afternoon to settle in at the hospitable and comfortable hotel Helmos. After a group briefing about the week ahead we took a short walk into the centre, where we sat outside at one of the local tavernas for a pleasant and very welcome evening meal. Day 2: 15th June - Lower Chelmos / Cave of the Lakes at Kastria We began with a breakfast of natural yogurt, local honey, fruit, and scrambled eggs sitting outside our hotel in 26 degrees of sunshine. Here we were treated to our first butterflies of the holiday. These were 2 European Swallowtails, a Southern Festoon, a male Cleopatra, an egg-laying Mallow Skipper, Small Heath, and Clouded Yellow. Some of the group were also fortunate enough to see Large Tortoiseshell and Scarce Swallowtail on a fly-by. We also saw a male Beautiful Demoiselle (the eastern form festiva) and a calling Hoopoe Upupa epops, which gave us a glorious introduction to the day. Following the road up out of Kalavryta, one couldn’t help but notice hundreds of bee hives painted in pastel shades adorning the meadows along the roadside. Here also Balkan Marbled Whites made their first appearance, together with Painted Lady’s that fluttered along the verges which were festooned with blue Scabious flowers and Chicory. Nearly every other roadside bush seemed to contain a Red-backed Shrike. We soon began exploring some of the meadows of Lower Chelmos.

International Journal For Research In Applied And Natural Science ISSN: 2208-2085 High Altitude Papilionoidea (Lepidoptera) Of Tsaghkunyatc mountains In Armenia and their diversity along the altitudinal gradient Noushig A. Zarikian, Hasmik G. Khachatryan & Mark Yu. Kalashyan Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology, National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. P. Sevak Street 7, 0014, Yerevan, Armenia. Tel.: +374-77374784, Email: [email protected] Abstract This study tries to link the butterfly species diveristy along the altitudinal span of Tsaghkunyatc mountain in Armenia. Butterflies were collected from March to October 2015- 2017. A checklist of 129 species is given and their abundances/diversity was calculated for 10 altitudinal zones. This revealed that the relationship between the observed numbers and abundance of butterfly species and and altitude follows hump-shaped curve – i.e the highest diversity in the mid elevation. A significant relationship was recorded between the altitude and the species richness and abundance and the relation followed the usual hump-shaped curve. However, the diversity and evenness indexes did not follow the hump-shaped pattern, but yielded a semi-constant relation with altitude. This could be explained by the existence of several species that typicaly found only on the highest altitudes. These results could be applied for habitat management in general and especially for planning of Protected Areas in this region. Keywords: Abundance, Armenia, evenness, Diversity, Papilionoidea, Species richness. Introduction The mountain masses are initially characterized, with individual unique physical parameters that vary along altitudinal gradients inquired in isolation and combination. The responses of butterflies to these gradients, either directly or through their host plant, are discussed at the levels of the individual and sometimes population and community (Mani 1990).
