ABOUT ……CARMEL COLLEGE FOR WOMEN

Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women is nestled at the foot of the hills in the village of Nuvem, Goa. It has the distinction of being the first and only college for women in the state of Goa.

The College is run by the sisters of the Apostolic Carmel congregation. The pioneers of this prestigious institution were Mother Theodosia A.C. the then Superior General of the congregation, Sr. Amabel A.C., the then superior of Fatima Convent, and Monsignor Ronald Knox, the Internuncio. Sr. Amabel felt the need to start a Women’s College in Goa and she shared her desire with her friend Dona Thelma da Costa Lourenco of Margao, who herself was working extensively in the field of education for several years in Bombay. Dona Thelma donated 35 acres of land at Nuvem for erecting a college for women as it had been her deep longing to see Goan girls pursue higher education.

The college had begun with the faculty of Arts and Science, but today it can boast of its expansion. The additions are the faculty of Commerce (1987); post-graduate courses (2007) in Commerce (M.Com.) with specialization in Management and Accountancy, M.A. in Psychology with specialization in counseling. The college has added to its credit a post- graduate course M.Sc –Food Technology in 2017.

We are proud to announce our collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industries (GCCI). The college also has a tacit understanding with the Centre for Environmental Education (CEE). The College is Accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade. It also has an ISO-9001-2015 certification.

Carmel College has a spacious and modern building with adequate facilities such as well- equipped laboratories and library, Wi-Fi internet, sports room cum gym, museum, botanical garden for study, games and recreation along with women’s hostel and a large campus with scope for expansion. The serene environment of Carmel College makes it an excellent place for study and reflection. Our students are our pride. Their performance at the university is outstanding and they are well placed both nationally and globally.

A WARM AND LOVING WELCOME TO CARMEL COLLEGE OF ARTS, SCIENCE AND COMMERCE FOR WOMEN

Carmel College has been serving the state of Goa and the wider community for over 55 years now. It is nestled at the foot of Nuvem hills, which is a serene, unpolluted and a picturesque village. The college provides a conducive and safe environment for higher education especially for young women. I am proud to say that till date it is the only college exclusively for girls at the undergraduate level in the state of Goa. The college is run by the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation founded by Venerable Mother Mary Veronica of the Passion way back in 1868 in Bayonne, France and established in India in 1870. It functions under the patronage of Mary, Queen Beauty of Carmel. The year 2020 started on a disturbing note with COVID-19 pandemic and a lockdown across the globe, in India with the Janata Curfew on March, 22nd 2020. Normally, we have a short break from our hectic academic time table. After returning from the summer vacation one feels happy and rejuvenated. There is a whole new level of enthusiasm and a spring in one’s life to take on the daily academic routine once again. This could not happen last academic year, no exams could be conducted properly and everything was so uncertain even till date. But life has to move on because we are dynamic. We probably have learnt to cope up with the lockdown giving vent to our creative ideas, innovations and many such initiatives. We might have participated in Webinars, Google Meets, Google quizzes and competitions, composed songs, produced and uploaded short videos and so on. Now it’s time for another academic year but may not be a normal type that we were used to all these years as students. We might not be physically present in the classrooms, might not be able to meet our classmates every day, might not be able to have the usual fun that we had dreamt of college life and which our seniors spoke of especially as First Year students, the hustle and bustle of every day travelling, choosing what to wear and what not to wear. All these and much more will remain a dream till normal life begins again and we know not when this will happen. But let us not be depressed and disappointed for we know not what the future holds for us but we definitely know who holds the future. There is ray of hope everywhere, a silver lining for every dark cloud. We can always begin anew just as the earth has also started rejuvenating and refreshing itself. Skies and seas are blue again; air is clean and fresh. We can resolve to study from other different modes like online teaching, virtual classrooms, Moodle teaching and learning and the like which could be more benefitting academically with effective participation and equally enjoying. Let’s cheer up and try to make our life brighter in spite of the pandemic. So once again I extend a very cordial welcome to all of you to Carmel College!

ADMISSION RULES

1. Admission list shall be put up on the college website. Full fees of the first term must be paid. Admission is confirmed only on the payment of all fees for the first term. 2. All admissions are valid only for a year and are therefore to be renewed for each subsequent year of study. 3. The Principal reserves the right to refuse admission to a student whose past academic record and conduct are considered unsatisfactory. 4. Students coming from other colleges should contact the college office with the admission form duly completed, together with a no objection certificate and a character certificate from the last college attended by them. 5. Last day of admission to Semester I, III and V classes is within one month of the day of re-opening. 6. Students will have to give a declaration if they have registered themselves at any other college and have taken admission in this college at the same time. 7. While applying for admission to the Semester I class, students should submit the following: a) HSSCE/ Equivalent Statement of marks cum Passing Certificate (one true copy) b) HSSCE/Equivalent leaving certificate – (Original copy) c) One colored photo: Size: 3.5cm x 2.5 cm d) Students admitted on the basis of Provisional Statement of Eligibility, have to submit a migration certificate in addition to the above. 8. A late fee is levied on fees not paid by the appointed day. 9. If an admitted student does not have minimum percentage of attendance by 15th of July, admission will be withdrawn. 10. On confirmation of admission, student along with the parent will have to submit an online undertaking at www.antiragging.in & www.amanmovement.org 12. Printed copy of the undertaking to be submitted to the college office.

CODE OF CONDUCT

1. Carmel College always expects its students to conduct themselves with dignity, decency and decorum. They are expected to keep up to high morals even outside the college campus so as to keep up the name of the college. 2. All the students are responsible to the college for their conduct on the College premises. Students of this college shall abide by the rules that may be made by the Principal / Vice- Principal or by the persons authorized by her from time to time. Disobedience, misconduct, misbehavior, sexual harassment or failure to comply with any of the rules will entail punishment including expulsion from the college. 3. Every student must wear the College Identity Card during college hours, college and University examination. Failure to do so will entail a fine of Rs.100/- per violation. The Identity Card shall be returned to the College Office without fail for cancellation when the student leaves the college. 4. No student should invite any outsider to attend classes, functions or for any other purpose without the prior permission of the Principal/ Vice-Principal. 5. Students applying for certificates, testimonials, letters of reference or any other document requiring the Principal’s signature should apply for the same in writing and claim them from the office after three days. No papers should be brought by the students directly to the Principal or Vice-Principal for signature. 6. Students should take particular care to be punctual at all lectures and practicals. Absence from a single lecture must be justified in writing and if prolonged illness is the cause, a medical certificate must be submitted on the day of resuming class. On duty record for absence due to participation in activities to be submitted on the following day of the activity. 7. A minimum of 75% attendance in lectures and practicals is required for students to answer their Semester End Examination. The attendance shall be taken for each lecture/practical separately. In case of science students, attendance for both theory and practicals shall be separately tabulated. Students will have to satisfy 75% criteria separately for theory and practicals. As per OA.17.3, students having less than 75% attendance will be debarred from answering the Semester End Examination.

8. Any student having grievance about her attendance should notify the college Principal/ Vice-Principal in writing within three days from the date of declaration of attendance on the College Notice Board. 9. Students should read the notices displayed on the College notice board from time to time. However, some urgent notices may be read out in the class-rooms. 10. Ragging is a cognizable offence and is banned in the institution. Anyone found indulging in ‘ragging’ is likely to be punished appropriately, which may include expulsion from the college by the Principal (as per directives received from Directorate of Higher Education, No. 9/2/2001/HE/415 dated 07/03/2005). 11. Students will form no association and will arrange no meetings in the College, without prior permission of the Principal / Vice-Principal. 12. Students should not loiter in the college corridor or cause disturbance on the College premises while the classes are in progress or at any other time. 13. Use of any narcotics or illegal substances on the college premises is strictly prohibited. 14. Students are expected to take proper care of the college property and to help in keeping the premises neat and tidy; damage done to the college property is a breach of discipline and will be dealt with severely. 15. Students will refrain from selling tickets or coupons of outside organizations in the college without the prior permission of the Principal / Vice-Principal. 16. Students are requested not to give the college address for their personal mail. 17. Students will be allowed to use cell phones in the classrooms strictly for academic purposes only, with the permission of the concerned teacher.

The decision of the Principal / Manager in all matters shall be final and binding on all students.

Ragging and Anti Ragging Rules

Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts: a) Any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student; b) Indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities by any student or student which causes or is likely to cause annoyance/hardship/physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other student. c) Asking any student to do any act, which such student will not in ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or torment or embarrassment, so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of such fresher or any other student; d) Any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts, or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher. e) Exploiting the service of a fresher or any other student for completing the academic tasks assigned to an individual or a group of students. f) Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or any other student by students; g) Any act of physical abuse including all the variants of it; sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger to health or person. h) Any act or abuse by spoken words, e-mails, post, public insults etc. which would also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other student; i) Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student, with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing off power, authority or superiority by a student over any fresher or any other student.

ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY THE HEAD OF THE INSTITUTION

On receipt of the recommendation of the Anti-Ragging Squad or on receipt of any information concerning any reported incident of ragging, the Head of institution shall

10 immediately determine if a case under the Penal law is made out and if so; either on his/her own or through a member of the Anti-Ragging authorized by him or her in this behalf, proceed to file a First Information Report (FIR) within 24 hours of receipt of such information or recommendation, with the police and local authorities, under the appropriate Penal Provisions relating to one or more below mentioned act. i. Abetment to Ragging. ii. Criminal Conspiracy to Ragging. iii. Unlawful assembly and rioting while Ragging iv. Public Nuisance created during Ragging. v. Violation of decency and morals through Ragging vi. Injury to body, causing hurt or grievous hurt vii. Wrongful restraint viii. Wrongful confinement ix. Use of Criminal force x. Assault as well as sexual offences or unnatural offence xi. Extortion xii. Criminal trespass xiii. Offences against property xiv. Criminal intimidation xv. Threat to commit any of the above mentioned offences xvi. Physical or Psychological humiliation. xvii. Any other offences following from the designation of “Ragging”.

Provided that Head of the institution shall forthwith report the occurrence of the incident of ragging to the District level ARC and the office of the affiliating University, if the institution is an affiliated Institution. Institution shall also continue with its enquiry initiated under clause (9) of these regulations and other measures without waiting for action on the part of police/local authorities and such remedial action shall be initiated and completed immediately and in no case later than a period of 7 days of the reported occurrence of the incident of Ragging.

ADMINISTRATIVE ACTION IN THE EVENT OF RAGGING

Sub Clause: 1. The institution shall punish a student found guilty of Ragging after following the procedure and in the manner prescribed herein under: a) The Anti-Ragging Committee of the institution shall take an appropriate decision, in regard to the punishment or otherwise, depending on the facts of each incident of ragging and nature and gravity of the incident of ragging established in the recommendations of the Anti-Ragging Squad. b) The Anti-Ragging Committee may, depending on the nature and gravity of the guilt established by the Anti-Ragging Squad, or award to those found guilty one or more of the following punishment namely: i. Suspension from attending classes and academic privileges ii. Withholding /withdrawing scholarship/fellowship and other benefits. iii. Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other evaluation process. iv. Withholding results. v. Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival etc. vi. Suspension/expulsion from the hostel vii. Cancellation of admission. viii. Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution for a specific period. Provided that where the persons committing or abetting the act of ragging are not identified, the institution shall resort to collective punishment.

c) An appeal against the order of punishment by the Anti-Ragging committee shall lie. i.In case of an order of an institution affiliated to or constituent part, of a university to the vice-chancellor of the University. ii.In case of an order of a University to its Chancellor iii.In case of an institution of national importance created by an Act of Parliament to the Chairman or chancellor of the institution as the case may be.

SUPPORT SERVICES

THE MENTOR SCHEME The College implements the students Mentor Scheme under which a small group of students is assigned to a teacher. The teacher in charge keeps in touch with students from his/her group and helps and guides them in their studies, personal problems, etc, through periodic meetings.

COUNSELLING The counselor is available on the campus for students from 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. to help the students to deal with various challenges faces by them. Confidentiality of the student is maintained.

OTHER FACILITIES CO-OPERATIVE STORES A registered Co-operative Stores managed by the Staff and Students is run on the College Campus. Goods at cost price is available for the benefit of the students. All the students are expected to be members of the Co-operative Society by purchasing a share at the value of Rs.11/-.

CANTEEN Soft drinks, tea, coffee, snacks and meals are available in the College canteen which is situated on the Campus.

HOSTEL Accommodation for students who wish to stay in the hostel is available. For further particulars, please apply to the Superior, Carmel Convent, Nuvem, Goa 403713. Prospectus and application forms are available at the Carmel Convent, Nuvem.

TRANSPORT Regular line buses ply on N.H.17 which runs in front of the College. The bus stop is at the College gate.

ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION CLUB The Club aims at creating awareness among the students to protect and maintain the environment. Students are encouraged to join the club.

WOMEN’S CELL The Women’s cell takes up women issues. It is involved in helping the less advantaged women of the locality.

STUDENTS COUNCIL The College has an active and vibrant Student Council. It plans and organizes various co- curricular and extracurricular activities of the college under the guidance of the Principal and the lecturers. The extra-curricular activities conducted are Debates, Elocution and Orator Contests, Quiz Competitions, Fun Week, Excursions, Camps and those under the auspices of the various associations and departments.

Eligibility Rules for Admission to…..

Semester- I & II (First Year) B.A.(General) / B.A. (Hon.) Programme

(A) Eligibility for admission to the semester I of the 3 years Programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Arts(Hons) the candidate should have passed: -

i) The HSSCE Std. (XII) examination conducted by the Goa State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in any stream, including vocational stream.

OR

ii) Std XII Arts/Science/Commerce or similar examination of another body, equivalent to Goa Board of secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Goa and recognized as such by .

(B) A candidate not covered under any of the above categories but desirous of seeking admission to the said course may apply to the college. However, the Registrar along with Dean of concerned Faculty and Chairperson (s) of Board (s) of Studies of concerned subjects shall decide the eligibility.

(C) A candidate admitted for Semester-I shall be deemed eligible for admission to Semester- II

(D) A candidate migrating from another recognized university and desirous of direct admission to Semester-II may be considered for admission provided she has cleared/passed the First Term/Semester –I examination of that University with those subjects for which admission is sought and undertakes to successfully complete the other compulsory courses of Semester- I.

Semester- III & IV (Second Year) B.A./ B.A. (Hon.) Programme:

A) A candidate who has registered and has requisite attendance for Semester I and Semester II shall be eligible for admission to Semester III.

B) Choice of General or Honours course will be exercised in Semester III from any one of the 3 subjects offered in Semester I and II.

C) A candidate migrating from any other recognized University may be considered for admission to Semester III of the B.A./B.A. (Hon.) provided:

1) The candidate has passed the Semester I and II B.A./ B.A. (Hon.) examination in all subjects from that University,

2) The candidate had offered at the first Year the same subjects as prescribed under major category available under the scheme of Goa University,

(a) The candidate undertakes to successfully complete the required courses and credits prescribed by Goa University for Semesters I & II, if she has not already done so in the previous University. The Result of the Semester IV examination shall be withheld if the candidate fails to fulfil this undertaking.

D) A candidate admitted for Semester III shall be deemed eligible for admission to Semester IV.

E) A candidate from another recognized University may be considered for direct admission to Semester IV provided she fulfills the conditions in (a), (b) and (c) at (B) above and in addition has passed/cleared Semester III/First Term examination of the Second Year B.A. of that University. However, the result of Semester IV shall be withheld if the candidate does not fulfill these conditions.

Semester - V (Third Year) B.A. / B. A.(Hon.) Programme:

A) A candidate who has been declared passed in Semester I to Semester IV examination shall be eligible for admission to Semester V.

B) A candidate admitted for Semester V shall be deemed eligible for admission to Semester VI.

C) A candidate migrating from any other recognized University may be considered for admission to Semester V of the B.A. programme provided:

(a) she has passed the second year B.A./ B.A. (Hon,) examination in all subjects from that University, and

(b) she has offered at the second year the required courses and credits under the scheme of this University. A candidate fulfilling these conditions shall be eligible for admission to only Semester V only.

Semester-VI (Third Year) B.A./ B.A. (Hon.) Programme:

A) A candidate already admitted for Semester V shall be deemed eligible for admission to Semester VI.

B) Direct admission to Semester VI shall not be permitted.

DSC: Discipline Specific Core where DSC 1A, DSC 2A and DSC 3A denote three different subjects. Students should choose any one group consisting of three subjects

The Department of Economics is committed to excellence in teaching that would foster all-round development of students. The Department endeavors to enthuse students to think critically about the economic issues they confront in their daily lives. Students are encouraged to keep abreast of local, national and global economic policies and issues, to analyze their effects and to develop innovative ideas and suggestions. Emphasis is placed on the awareness of economy- environment inter-linkages in the curricular and extra-curricular activities of the Department, motivating students to be leaders and role models for a positive change. In a teaching-learning process which is effective and interactive, the Department conducts a number of activities not only relevant to the curriculum but which also help the students to get acquainted and updated with the current issues, develop analytical thinking skills as well as prepare them for career opportunities. Some of the activities conducted are student seminars, debates and group discussions, policy analysis, article synopsis and reviews, economics GK quiz, field trips, study tours, guest lectures and add-on and skill enhancement courses. Students are assigned leadership roles and responsibilities in organizing and conducting activities and events which equip them with skills to be confident, committed and dynamic in the pursuit of their goals. Alumnae of the Department, most of whom move on to obtain a Master’s degree, are successfully placed in industry, Government administration, banking, finance, hospitality, and teaching jobs.

With degrees from the universities of Bombay, Goa, Hyderabad, Manipal and experience in the fields of publishing, performance arts and translation, they bring diversity and a multiplicity of skills and talents to the department. Faculty teach Language, Literature, Communication Skills, Business Communication, Creative Writing, Performance Arts, translation as well as traditional literary studies. Alumnae from the Department have gone on to further studies at prestigious institutions like Xavier Institute of Communications, Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, Gemmolgical Institute Dubai, besides universities across India. They hold successful jobs and pursue careers in teaching, public relations, event management, International and Domestic Aviation Companies, and as journalists in leading newspapers ranging from The Indian Express to Gulf News and local print and digital media. The Department encourages co-curricular and extra-curricular activities wholeheartedly and is happy to nurture student leaders. It also hosts and trains students for debates, public speaking, seminars, literature festivals like Goa Arts and Literary Festival (GALF), theme specific workshops and symposia, guest lectures, meet the author encounters, student paper presentations and encourages interactive teaching- learning. The Kala Ghoda field trip to Mumbai conducted once every two years to the Performance and Literary Arts Festival in Mumbai, gives students invaluable exposure to visual and performance arts and inculcates Integrated Skills in English (ISE). In January 2020 TYBA student Katienne Miranda and faculty member Roxana Singh attended the Jaipur Literature Festival – the largest literature festival in the world. A visit to the Edinburgh Theatre Festival is on the cards in the near future. Small classes at the degree level and a tutorial style of teaching-learning ensure personal attention and enrichment. Innovative teaching pedagogy like experiential theatre methods or music in teaching aesthetics exposes students to the latest methodologies.

DEPARTMENT OF HINDI

Department of Hindi started in the year 1964 with the establishment of the college itself. Students are offered with General and Honour degree in Hindi. The vision of our department is to establish human values among the students by making them aware of Hindi language at literary level. Our objective is to promote Hindi language in a non-Hindi speaking place like Goa and to inculcate a sense of respect for Hindi and to make continuous efforts to provide means of employment through Hindi.

There are end numbers of career opportunities in the field of Hindi. By pursuing graduation in Hindi one can choose career in the field of Academics and Research. Translation also provides a great scope for building career in the Literary as well as Administrative Translation, Online Translation – Hindi to Foreign Language and vice versa. It also opens door to the corporate world, such as in Banks, MPT, NIO, All India Radio, Income Tax and Railway. The objective of the Department is to encourage the learning of history as it takes us back to our roots, tradition and culture and helps us to avoid the mistakes of our past and plan for the future. The Department of History has organized a number of activities ranging from National- level seminars, workshops, inter-college events, study tours and observing days of national importance. A very innovative activity of the Department is the founding of a Civic Club in collaboration with MARG, to cultivate in our students a sense of civic consciousness. Yet another highlight of the Department, is the commencement of a certificate course History through Heritage to instil in our students a love for heritage and its preservation. The Department has seen outstanding results at the Third Year level, with students topping in the subject and being awarded the prestigious Peter Alvares Award.

Semester - I & II (First Year) B.Sc. (General) / B.Sc. (Hon.) Programme:

(A) Eligibility for admission to the semester I of the Three years Programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Science (Hon.) the candidate should have passed: -

i) The HSSCE Std. (XII) examination conducted by the Goa State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in the Science stream OR ii) The HSSCE (Std. XII) examination of the vocational stream conducted by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education OR iii) The Candidate must have passed similar examination of another body, equivalent to Goa Board of secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Goa and recognized as such by Goa University.

(B) A candidate not covered under any of the above categories but desirous of seeking admission to the said course may apply to the college. However, the Registrar along with Dean of concerned Faculty and Chairperson(s) of Board(s) of Studies of concerned subjects shall decide the eligibility.

(C) A candidate admitted for Semester-I shall be deemed eligible for admission to Semester-II

(D) A candidate migrating from another recognized University and desirous of direct admission to Semester-II may be considered for admission provided she has cleared/passed the First Term/Semester –I examination of that University with those subjects for which admission is sought and undertakes to successfully complete the other compulsory papers of Semester-I.

Semester-III & IV (Second Year) B.Sc. (General)/ B.Sc (Hon.) Programme:

A) A candidate who has registered and has requisite attendance for Semester I and Semester II shall be eligible for admission to Semester III.

B) Choice of General or Honours course will be exercised in Semester III from any one of the 3 subjects offered in Semester I and II.

C) A candidate migrating from any other recognized University may be considered for admission to Semester III of the B.Sc./B.Sc. (Hon.) provided: (a) She has passed the First Year B.Sc. /B.Sc. (Hon.) examination in all subjects from that University, (b) She had offered at the first year the same subjects as prescribed under Major category available under the scheme of this University, (c) She undertakes to successfully complete the required courses and credits prescribed by this University for Semesters I & II, if she has not already done so in the previous University. Result of Semester IV examination shall be withheld if the candidate fails to fulfill this undertaking.

D) A candidate admitted for Semester III shall be deemed eligible for admission to Semester IV. E) A candidate from another recognized University may be considered for direct admission to Semester IV provided she fulfils the conditions in (a), (b) and (c) at (B) above and in addition has cleared Semester III examination of the Second Year B.Sc. of that University. However, the result of Semester IV shall be withheld if the candidate does not fulfill these conditions.

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

The department of Botany offers a degree of Bachelor of Science in Botany taught by highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty committed to excellence in teaching, research and all-round development of students. The faculty regularly attend state, national and international seminars and conferences and have publications in national and international journals. Well- equipped laboratories, PTC Laboratory, Green House, Botanical Garden, Herbarium & Natural History Museum are distinct features of the department. Regular field visits, institutional visits and study tours to places of botanical interest in and outside Goa are an integral part of the teaching of Botany to give a complete understanding of the subject along with field experience. The other highlights of the department include regular display of ‘Campus Blooms’, ‘Biology News’ and ‘Values and Personality Development’. Guest lectures, workshops and certificate courses are organized on a regular basis. Some of the workshops organized include ‘Terrarium & Kokedama’, ‘Developing Botanical Drawing Skills’, ‘Home Wet Waste & Garden Waste Composting’ and ‘Herbal Soap Making’ in an attempt to encourage skill development in students. Skill-based course content in Floriculture & Herbal Technology has created a lot of interest and enthusiasm among students. As part of extension services, the department conducts programmes for students of neighboring schools and higher secondary schools. The department organized a certificate course in ‘Bakery’ with a tie up with KVIC, Govt. of India with EDP Training that would help participants in obtaining financial assistance under the PMEG Programme. Our students excel at the final year examinations in Botany conducted by the Goa University. Career opportunities for students include continuing further studies to obtain M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degree; continuing research as a career; employment as teachers/professors in academic institutions; employment in state and national organizations and administrative services; self-employment opportunities as landscape gardeners, florists, horticulturists, progressive farmers, etc.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

The largest and most vibrant department of the college, the department of chemistry offers a degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. With enthusiastic and dedicated staff the department provides an atmosphere for the all-round development of students.

The department has two well equipped laboratories enabling the students to get hands on experience in laboratory techniques. Apart from this the department is instrumental in extracurricular activities which include field trips to multinational industries and prominent institutes of research. The annual events of the department are the chemistry quiz and the celebration of science day which gives the students the opportunity to be creative and showcase their talent. The department also has its very own club called CHEMSPARK that organised various activities and competitions throughout the year and also felicitates the meritorious students of all three years in science. The department also organises certificate courses in cosmetology and dance.

Mathematics as a subject was an integral part of the college since its inception. The faculty of mathematics has made a conscious effort to grow in sync with the directions of the Institute and an awareness of the larger needs of the society. This year we are fortunate to evolve as Department of Mathematics.

The department has competent faculties with wide knowledge in pure & applied Mathematics. This year the department is offering B.Sc. (Hons) program. It will provide opportunities to the students to choose their career in education and research in various field of Mathematics. The role and use of mathematics has increased manifold in the last decade with the onset of the information revolution that has impacted several other disciplines as well. Dedicated and experienced faculty members have consistently provided good academic record, resulting in 75 % of our students opting for higher studies.

For enrichment of the subject, the faculty organises study tours / national/ state level programmes. Students get an exposure to Experimental Demonstrations of Physics Concepts by Nationally Reputed Physicists, Night SKY Observations etc. Department has coordinated with Goa University, IAPT (Indian Association of Physics Teachers), Inter-University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi to organize activities like Refresher Courses, Annual Conventions, Workshops and National Seminars.

The college is a designated center for the conduct of National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE). Students are encouraged to answer these exams.

Department of Zoology has earned for itself intra and inter institutional peer recognition for its teaching programs, research, consultancy and extension activities. The department also houses a Natural History Museum and the Biodiversity Research Cell (BRC), which collaborates with many regional and national research institutions with a mandate of training our students in Field Biology and also documenting the biodiversity of the state. Alumni of the department have been occupying academic and research positions in institutions across and outside the country. Centre for research in Zoology is established with a view to promote and foster research culture among faculty and students in the area of Zoology. Faculty members have funded research projects in specialized areas of Zoology, and is currently writing Management Plans for some critical Protected areas of Goa. Department has procured an advanced Imaging Research Binocular Microscope of Japanese make Meiji Techno with retinoid Screen for real time visualization and recording. The department offers applied papers designed by faculty, such as ‘Wildlife and Ecotourism’ and ‘Environment Impact Assessment’ (EIA) approved by the BoS of Zoology of Goa University to endow students with employability skills for opportunities in Wildlife & Forestry, Ecotourism. Semester- I & II (First Year) B.Com. (General)/ B.Com. (Hon.) Programme :

(A) Eligibility for admission to Semester I of the 3 years Programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) the candidate should have passed: -

i) The HSSCE Std. (XII) examination conducted by the Goa State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in commerce stream or vocational stream: - OR i) Must have passed class XII Commerce or similar examination of another body, equivalent to Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Goa and recognized as such by Goa University.

(B) A candidate not covered under any of the above categories but desirous of seeking admission to the said course may apply to the college. However, the Registrar along with Dean of concerned Faculty and Chairperson(s) of Board(s) of Studies of concerned subjects shall decide the eligibility.

(C) A candidate admitted for Semester-I shall be deemed eligible for admission to Semester-II

(D) A candidate migrating from another university and desirous of direct admission to Semester-II may be considered for admission provided she has cleared the first term/semester –I examination of that university with those subjects for which admission is sought and undertakes to successfully complete the other compulsory papers of Semester-I.

Carmel College library is fully automated with LIBSYS software for its efficient and effective functioning. It has a collection of 38,529 books, 100 magazines and journals. Library also subscribes for INFLIBNET where the faculty can access e-books and e-journals. The Library caters to the requirements of both the undergraduate as well as the post graduate students. Internet and Wi-fi facilities are also provided by it for both staff and students. Regular book exhibitions are held on important occasions. The library is also equipped with computers wherein the students make the best use of the same for projects, assignments and other study materials. To encourage the habit of reading among the students, regular book review competition is held. The library has open access facility wherein the students have free access to the books. The library can accommodate 200 students at a time. The library annexure has an IQAC room which is utilised for workshops and various other activities. The National Cadet Corps unit of Carmel College is part of 1 Goa Girls Battalion. The main motto of NCC is Unity and Discipline. The NCC is a responsive, learning and continuously evolving organization. Cadets have developed character, comradeship, discipline, spirit of adventure and selfless service. Further, it aims at creating a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life, who will serve the Nation regardless of which career they choose. Needless to say, the NCC also provides an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces.

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is ‘Not Me but You’. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service, as well as consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual, is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole. The aims and objectives of the NSS are as follows:-  To work with/among people.  To engage in creative or constructive social action.  To gain skill in the exercise of democratic leadership.  To bridge the gulf between the educated and the uneducated masses.  To promote the will to serve the weaker section of the community.

The NSS Unit of Carmel College annually conducts a number of activities ranging from visits to old age homes, orphanages, blood donation camps, annual special camps and talks motivating NSS volunteers to be selfless in the service of the society. Further, competitions have been conducted on various occasions to commemorate events of significance. Over the years, the NSS Unit of Carmel College has had an overwhelming response, with a big number of volunteers registering for the same.

Consumer Welfare Cell

The Consumer welfare Cell of Carmel College of Arts, Science & Commerce for Women, Nuvem, in collaboration with the Directorate of Consumer Welfare and Civil Supplies, organized a One-Day programme on the 22nd of July 2019, for the students. The theme for the programme was “ Assert Rights and Pursue Remedies.” A talk on the theme of programme was delivered by Dr. Maria Fatima D’Souza from Government College, Borda. She explained in detail the different rights of a consumer under Food Safety Act,2006, Packaging Commodity Rules,Bureau of Indian Standards 2016, Goa Public Health Act,1985 and Consumer Protection Act,1986 which was amended in 2014.

STREET PLAY The students of the Consumer Welfare Cell put up a street play on “Assert Rights and Pursue Remedies” on the 25th of July 2019.In this street play, they highlighted the rights and the responsibilities of the consumers under the Consumer Protection Act of 1956.They also created awareness on the redressal machinery available for redressing the grievances of the consumers. The street play focused on the duty on the consumer, how to be alert while making the purchases. The street play was performed in college, near the Nuvem church and the Margao market.

Consumer Awareness talk by Mr.Roland Martins. A talk on Consumer Protection Act was delivered by Mr. Roland Martins. He enligntened the students about the rights that the consumer can enjoy under the Consumer Protection Act 1986, on 23rd August 2019 .

WOMEN’S CELL

On the path to rediscovering the powerful being that resides within, there is a need to make a women realize her real worth and potential. In view of this the management has provided strong support to all its girl students through the inception of the Women’s cell. Every year a large number of students enroll under this cell. The secretary of Women’s cell for the year 2019-20 was Ms. Jesney Carvalho who ably took up the responsibilities for the year as secretary of the cell. In order to encourage students to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and to provide a platform for the same a “Market day” was organized on 21st September2019. This event also saw an active participation from the students and the local community. The products on sale were locally grown vegetables, rice, handmade soaps, jewelry, bags, Goan sweets, indoor and outdoor plants, aroma oils and chemical free lipsticks. Women from the villages of Nuvem, Benaulim, Majorda and Betalbatim. In order to commemorate International Women’s Dayon 8th March 2020 a series of activities were organized to celebrate strong, bold and beautiful women that we are. A “5km Beach Run” was organized on 8th March on Benaulim Beach, that saw an enthusiastic participation by our students, faculty and community. On 9th March a number of off stage and on stage events were organized. Off stage events included “Strong Woman” an event with tasks that tested the endurance and will power of the students and a photography competition on the changing role of women in society. On stage events included a fashion show by students across streams showcasing the strength and power of our goddesses. This programme was held in collaboration with Bank of Baroda, Benaulim branch. The bank officials addressed the students and informed them about the special schemes for women. This day also saw a number of stalls like food carts, handmade cloth bags that were put up by the students and women from the community. According to Diane Mariechild, “A woman is a full circle, within her is a power to create, nurture and transform”

However, if the fees payable for the both the programmes are the same, the fees paid earlier shall be transferred to the final program where admission is sought. e) All other case of the refund of the fees will be decided on case basis on its merit.
