I will make arrangements to appoint you as an Honorary Research Fellow of the School of BioSciences, which is the same level as our other visiting scientists in the School. This will allow you access to the various facilities of the University, including my laboratory. I note that the costs of your visit, including flights, accommodation and sundry expenses, will be paid by your funding from China More personally, I am very pleased that you are able to visit Australia and my group, and I’m very excited by the prospect of expanding your impressive bot fly collection with Australian specimens, and thus contributing to our understanding of these remarkable insects. Departure from Beijing by QF108 from Beijing Capital International Airport at 23:45. Day 2 21 Jan. Arrive in Sydney at pm14:10 on 21st Jan, then transfer to Melbourne and arrive in Airport at pm 19:05. Day 3 22 Jan. AM: Visiting Prof. Mark Elgar and other colleagues at University of Melbourne. PM: Visiting the School of BioSciences, University of Melbourne, and give a presentation on latest research for Mark’s group. Day 4 23 Jan. AM: Meeting the director of insects at the Museum of Melbourne, and examining the insect collections. PM: Continuing examining the insect collections, especially Diptera specimens. Day 5 24 Jan. AM: Preparing gears for field work, including hand nets, boxes and necessary chemicals for pinning and preserving specimens. PM: Departing from the University of Melbourne for Apollo Bay, passing Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary and Serendip Sanctuary collecting Diptera species distributed near the coasts, stay at Apollo Bay. Day 6 25 Jan. AM: Leaving from Apollo Bay to the Great Otway National Park, investigating the ecology of Eucalyptus temperate rain forest, coastal wetlands, and grasslands. PM: Visiting Port Campbell National Park, exploring the ecology of the iconic coastal bushlands. Stay at Colac. Day 7 26 Jan. AM: Visiting Lake Colac, and collecting the insects around the inland freshwater wetland. PM: Leaving for Mildura via (6hr30min drive), collecting along the road, stay at Mildura. Day 8 27 Jan. AM: Collecting around Mildura, in semi-dessert environment. PM: Leaving from Mildura for Lake Tyrrell (2.5hr drive), a rare inland salt lake wet land ecosystem, collecting around Lake Tyrrell, then leave for Melbourne (8hr drive) via Creswick, a Kangaroo Alpaca processing plant, search for bot flies, stay at Melbourne for the night. Day 9 28 Jan. AM: Pinning and labelling specimens in the labs at University of Melbourne. PM: Meeting Prof. Mark Elgar and discussing about the research plans of the bot flies evolution. Day 10 29 Jan. AM: Working at University of Melbourne. PM: Visiting labs and the Tiegs Museum at University of Melbourne. Day 11 30 Jan. AM: Going to Dandenong Ranges National Park by car (1.5hr drive), and exploring the unique Temperate tree fern forest and ecological environment of eucalyptus forest in Australia. PM: Collecting insects in and around farms in Yarra Velley, leaving at Melbourne. Day 12 31 Jan. AM: Preparing the gears for fieldwork. PM: Leaving from Melbourne for Lakes Entrance (4hr drive), collecting along the road, visiting the mangrove forest and coastal wetlands, the highest latitude of this kind in the world. Stay at Lakes Entrance. Day 13 1 Feb. AM: Leaving from Lakes Entrance for Albury (5hr drive) via Alpines national park, examine the high land ecosystems. PM: Visit Mount Buffalo National Park, collecting along the road, stay at Albury. Day 14 2 Feb. AM: Leaving from Albury to Canberra (7hr drive), collecting along the road. PM: Visiting the National Insect Collection, stay at Canberra. Day 15 3 Feb. AM: Leaving from Canberra to Sydney via Blue Mountains National Park (3hr drive). PM: Leaving from Blue Mountains National Park to Sydney (2.3hr drive), stay at Sydney. Day 16 4 Feb. AM: Pinning and labelling specimens. PM: Gather gears, prepare to leave for Beijing. Day 17 5 Feb. Departure from Sydney by QF107 at Sydney Airport at 13:35., and landing at Beijing at 22:15. .
