Verdura® Native Planting
Abronia maritime Abronia maritima is a species of sand verbena known by the common name red (Coastal) sand verbena. This is a beach-adapted perennial plant native to the coastlines of southern California, including the Channel Islands, and northern Baja California. Abronia villosa Abronia villosa is a species of sand-verbena known by the common name desert (Inland) sand-verbena. It is native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico and the southern California and Baja coast. Adenostoma Adenostoma fasciculatum (chamise or greasewood) is a flowering plant native to fasciculatum California and northern Baja California. This shrub is one of the most widespread (Coastal/Inland) plants of the chaparral biome. Adenostoma fasciculatum is an evergreen shrub growing to 4m tall, with dry-looking stick-like branches. The leaves are small, 4– 10 mm long and 1mm broad with a pointed apex, and sprout in clusters from the branches. Arctostaphylos Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is a plant species of the genus Arctostaphylos (manzanita). uva-ursi Its common names include kinnikinnick and pinemat manzanita, and it is one of (Coastal/Inland) several related species referred to as bearberry. Arctostaphylos Arctostaphylos edmundsii, with the common name Little Sur manzanita, is a edmundsii species of manzanita. This shrub is endemic to California where it grows on the (Coastal/Inland) coastal bluffs of Monterey County. Arctostaphylos Arctostaphylos hookeri is a species of manzanita known by the common name hookeri Hooker's manzanita. Arctostaphylos hookeri is a low shrub which is variable in (Coastal/Inland) appearance and has several subspecies. The Arctostaphylos hookeri shrub is endemic to California where its native range extends from the coastal San Francisco Bay Area to the Central Coast. -

S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (Service) biological opinion (Opinion) in accordance with section 7 of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as amended (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.), regarding the issuance of an amendment to the incidental take permit (ITP) for the Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) County of San Diego (County) Subarea Plan (Subarea Plan) for Otay Ranch Village 14 and Planning Areas 16 and 19 (Project) pursuant to section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Act. The Service issued the Section 10(a)(1)(B) permit (PRT-840414) to the County for their Subarea Plan on March 17, 1998. The permit duration is for 50 years. The County is requesting the Amendment to change the footprint of the Project, as well as add incidental take coverage for the federally endangered Quino checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha quino; QCB) and San Diego fairy shrimp (Branchinecta sandiegonensis; SDFS). The MSCP is a comprehensive, 50-year habitat conservation plan program that addresses urban development and the needs of 85 covered species and the preservation of natural vegetation communities within a 582,243-acre planning area in southwest San Diego County (City of San Diego 1998). -

They comprise an intact and rugged wilderness area connecting two countries and some of the richest montane and desert ecosystems in the world that support wide- ranging, iconic species, including mountain lion, California condor, and bighorn sheep. -

Tschudin, Jr. Director – Design & Construction Encompass Health 9001 Liberty Parkway Birmingham, Alabama 35242 Subject: Biology Letter Report for Encompass Health Chula Vista, City of Chula Vista, California Dear Mr. Tschudin: This letter report provides an analysis of potential biological resource impacts associated with Encompass Health Chula Vista (proposed project) located in the City of Chula Vista (City), California (Assessor’s Parcel Number 644- 040-01-00). This biology letter report also includes a discussion of any potential biological resources that may be subject to regulation under the City of Chula Vista Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) Subarea Plan (Subarea Plan) (City of Chula Vista 2003). Project Location The property (i.e., on-site; Assessor’s Parcel Number 644-040-01-00) occupies 9.79 acres and is located approximately 0.2 miles east of Interstate 805 between Main Street and Olympic Parkway (Figure 1, Project Location). The project also includes an off-site impact area of 0.22 acre located along the southeastern corner of the site where future utility connections may occur, making the total study area acreage for the project 10.01 acres. The site is located on Shinohara Lane accessed from Brandywine Avenue and is located on the U.S. Geological Service 7.5-minute series topographic Imperial Beach quadrangle map. The site exists within an urban portion of the City and is bound on the south and east by industrial buildings, to the west by single-family residences, and to the north by multi-family condominiums (Figure 2, Aerial Image). -

BORDER AGENCY FIRE COUNCIL Year End Report 2011 & 2012 Border Agency Fire Council History The Border Agency Fire Council (BAFC) is made up of thirty-one United States and Mexican government agencies and organizations representing fire protection, law enforcement, legislators, emergency responders, natural resource managers, and elected officials that address public safety issues pertaining to wildfire along the U.S/Mexico international border. It is a fact that people from other countries have and will continue to enter the United States illegally by crossing from Mexico into the United States. In an effort to stop the flow of illegal immigration, in 1995 the United States government began “Operation Gatekeeper”, in an effort to tighten border security near the city of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. It instead pushed the crossers to the rugged east of the county and started a new immigration pattern. In desperation, people started entering on foot from the eastern part of Tijuana and without knowing, a trip that formerly took a few hours along the coast, turned into several days and involved a strenuous hike through rugged wilderness. People were not prepared for the summer heat that swelters or the winter where the temperature drops below freezing at the higher elevations. Many of these people simply didn’t understand the difficult conditions they would encounter and this lack of knowledge proved to be life threatening. The Border Agency Fire Council was formally created during the 1996 fire season, with the first meetings conducted in the fall of 1995 due to a dramatic increase in wildfire activity in southeastern San Diego County. -

Theodore Payne Foundation, a non-profit plant nursery, seed source, book store, and education center dedicated to the preservation of wild flowers and California native plants. This a report for March 17, 2017. New reports will be posted each Friday through the end of May. Just like popcorn, add some heat, and the kernels start popping. So it is with wild flowers in the desert. And that is the place to be this week! Drop everything! Change plans made for other mundane responsibilities, and GO! I always urge you to visit the websites just before you take a trip to any of these places to ensure conditions are favorable for visitors. Along Henderson Canyon Road, ABDSP. Photo by Fred Melgert Anza Borrego Desert State Park is wildflower Nirvana now! The bloom is excellent in numerous locations around the Borrego Valley. The end of DiGiorgio Road and Coyote Canyon are now in full bloom with dune evening primrose (Oenothera deltoides), verbena (Abronia villosa), Arizona lupine (Lupinus arizonicus), and bright yellow desert dandilions (Malacothrix glabrata). There are plenty of flowers right around the end of the asphalt in that location with good parking too, but hiking in a way yields the best show. This is an area that will likely be congested over this next weekend as lots of people head to Anza-Borrego to see the flowers, so try to get there early. Further to the east, the area north and south of Henderson Canyon Road is in full bloom as well, dominated by a large field of desert sunflowers (Geraea canescens), with sand verbena (Abronia villosa) and dune evening primrose (Oenothera deltoides) along the edges. -
