P-Bruins Week in Review 1/31/17 – 2/7/17 Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] P-BRUINS WEEK IN REVIEW 1/31/17 – 2/7/17 Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins had a quiet week with just one home game over the weekend. Friday marked their first game of February and first since the All-Star break as they defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds 3-1. Alex Grant, Noel Acciari and Danton Heinen picked up goals in the game, but it was Tyler Randell that had his first multipoint game of the year to lead the team with two points. Peter Cehlarik leads the team in goals, but the team will be without his services for the foreseeable future. Today Boston recalled the 21-year old who is in his first professional season with the Bruins organization after 40 games with Providence. The 90th pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, Cehlarik has 18 goals and 15 assists for 33 points and had a rating of +9. He is ninth in the AHL in goals and second among rookies. Though it is a big loss for Providence, it is the only roster move the team made this week. Jordan Szwarz remains the team leader in both points (34) and assists (24) while Wayne Simpson leads in rating (+17). Malcolm Subban continues to play well after a slow start to the year with another win Friday. He led the P-Bruins to victory Friday with 26 saves and has now allowed two goals or fewer in each of his last eight games. Tommy Cross inched closer to Providence history as well. He is now eight games away from 260 games played, which would tie Andrew Bodnarchuk for third in team history. Providence remains both third in the Atlantic and third in the Eastern Conference with a record of 26-12-5-3 (60 pts). The P-Bruins have a very busy week starting tonight in Albany at 7pm. They will continue their stretch of four games in six nights Friday at the Dunk at 7:05 pm for the first of a home-and-home against Bridgeport.     Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] P-BRUINS WEEK IN REVIEW 2/20/17 – 2/26/17 Providence, RI – There are just 20 games remaining in the 2016-17 AHL regular season, and after sweeping their set of three weekend games the Providence Bruins remain in strong position to make the playoffs for a fifth straight season. The P-Bruins started their weekend with a home-and-home series against a Bridgeport team they had just one win against all year and a team ahead of them in the standings. After taking the first game at home 2-1, Providence came back from a 3-2 third period deficit by scoring two goals in 15 seconds to win 4-3 in Bridgeport. Their weekend concluded with a 3-0 win over Springfield at the Dunk, Zane McIntyre’s first career shutout. Providence now sits second in both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference with a record of 33-14-5-4 and 75 points. Those 75 points are second most in the AHL and the team is just four points away from first place. In a loaded division, however, the team will have to continue their good play as fifth place Hershey has 67 points and only the top four teams from each division will make the playoffs. Tommy Cross led the team in scoring for the weekend, posting a goal and three assists while scoring in every game. His lone goal was the game winner on Saturday in Bridgeport and he also upped his team lead in rating to +19.

    Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] YOUNGSTERS LEAD PROVIDENCE TO OPENING NIGHT WIN Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds Saturday night 5-2 to open up their 2017-18 regular season schedule. The P-Bruins got goals from Peter Cehlarik, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson, Ryan Fitzgerald, Tommy Cross and Zach Senyshyn while Zane McIntyre made the start in goal. The P-Bruin offense clicked early and often in the first, as the team struck three times in the opening period. Cehlarik opened things up at 11:10, going five-hole off a pass from Kenny Agostino to make it 1-0 Providence. The team doubled their lead on Forsbacka Karlsson’s first professional goal at 17:41. Alone in the right slot, he sent a one-timer by Harri Sateri on a beautiful centering pass from Cehlarik. Ed Wittchow cut the Springfield deficit to 2-1 late in the first, but the P-Bruins regained their two goal lead with 50 seconds left in the period as Fitzgerald scored from the left slot on a centering pass from Jordan Szwarz. His first regular season AHL goal sent Providence to the locker room up 3-1. The P-Bruins opened it up at 16:02 of the second period thanks to their captain. While on the power play, Danton Heinen took a feed from Jordan Szwarz at the right hash. He sent a pass out to Cross alone at the point, and the defenseman rocketed a one-timer through traffic for his first goal of the year.

    Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] PENGUINS COMEBACK TO BEAT P-BRUINS 3-2 IN SHOOTOUT Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins fell in a shootout to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Sunday afternoon 3-2, dropping their first game of the season on home ice to the first place team in the Atlantic Division. The P-Bruins got goals from Tommy Cross and Adam Payerl while Zane McIntyre made his 30th start of the season in net. The first 12 minutes were very physical, with Providence holding the Penguins without a shot on goal. At 13:42, Tommy Cross netted a power play goal to open the scoring. From the left-wing corner, Jordan Szwarz delivered a centering pass to the P-Bruins captain at the point. He fired a one-timer by Casey DeSmith for his eighth goal of the season and the P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead. Payerl doubled the lead less than five minutes later on his fourth goal of the year. Zboil entered the zone and deked to create space for Payerl. After his first shot was blocked, he got his own rebound on the top of the crease and scored to give Providence a 2-0 lead into the intermission. The Penguins responded in the second period tying the game with two goals of their own. The first came at 6:31 off the stick of Gage Quinney. Frank Corrado won a battle for the puck in front of his own bench and snuck the puck out to Quinney.

    Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] TWO GOALS IN SECOND, THIRD PERIOD LEAD P-BRUINS OVER DEVILS 4-2 Albany, NY – The Providence Bruins defeated the Albany Devils 4-2 in their only Monday night tilt of the season. The P-Bruins got goals from Justin Hickman, Jake DeBrusk, Tommy Cross and an empty netter from Colby Cave while Zane McIntyre improved to 9-0 between the pipes. Albany had the better chances in period number one, but McIntyre refused to let anything through despite two Devils power plays. They would get one by him just 1:09 into the second despite being shorthanded. The P-Bruins turned the puck over behind their net to former Providence College hockey star Kevin Rooney who sent a pass to Max Novak. He scored the first shorthanded goal against Providence all season as the Devils went up 1-0. It didn’t take long for Providence to respond, as at 4:46 Justin Hickman netted his first goal of the season to tie the game at one. Matt Bartkowski dug the puck out of the corner and passed it to Hickman who fired a shot from the right circle that deflected past Ken Appleby. Sean Kuraly picked up the secondary assist as Providence tied the score. Providence took the lead at 11:42 while on the power play on DeBrusk’s seventh goal of the season. Matt Grzelcyk sent a pass to Cross who sent a shot that trickled by Appleby but not into the goal.

    Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] LATE GOAL BY CROSS GIVES P-BRUINS 1-0 WIN OVER PENGUINS Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins defeated the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins tonight by a final score of 1-0 in the first game of their three-in-three weekend. Tommy Cross scored the only goal of the game, while Zane McIntyre registered 28 saves for the shutout. Both teams got off to a slow start in the first, with neither controlling the play. Providence goaltender Zane McIntyre blocked all thirteen shots he faced, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Anthony Peter matched the effort to keep the game scoreless going into intermission. The second period brought dramatic improvements for the Bruins offense. The P-Bruins controlled more of the play to allow for more attack zone time. Providence forwards Peter Cehlarik and Anders Bjork registered solid scoring chances, but were unable to beat Penguins goaltender Anthony Peter. Wilkes-Barre also couldn’t find a way to beat McIntyre, who made several key saves in the period to keep the game scoreless. The P-Bruins solid play continued in the third, while both teams continued to struggle to score. Providence finally broke through on the scoreboard later in the period, when Bruins captain Tommy Cross beat Anthony Peter on the powerplay at 11:13. The goal, assisted by Austin Czarnik and Peter Cehlarik, was Cross’ fifth of the season. Providence maintained pressure for the remainder of the period, turning back a Wilkes-Barre rush in the final minutes to cap the 1-0 victory.

The P-Bruins got goals from Tommy Cross, Danton Heinen, Peter Mueller and two from Chris Porter while Zane McIntyre earned his second straight playoff start in net. After a scoreless first, former P-Bruin David Warsofsky scored twice in 23 seconds in a wild period. A slap-shot from the point on a power play and a blast off a Kevin Porter faceoff at the right blue line made things 2-0 Penguins. Tom Sestito made it 3-0 at 9:45, but Porter responded seven seconds later while the teams were playing 4-4. Matt Grzelcyk sent a pass across the blue line to Alex Grant at the left point. Grant’s slap-pass into the crease found Porter, who tipped in his first goal of the playoffs to make it 3-1 Penguins after 40 minutes. The scoring was just beginning for Providence, as Porter netted his second of the game at 17:11. Austin Czarnik sent a pass to Grant at the right point, and his one-timer was stopped but knocked loose in the crease. Porter came rushing in from the left dot to put home the goal that made it 3-2 Penguins. Just 63 seconds later, Cross tied the score at 3-3 as he came up the left side and fired a wrister by Casey DeSmith.

The P-Bruins got goals from Ryan Fitzgerald and Josh Hennessy while Zane McIntyre made his 32nd start of the season in net. Springfield opened up the scoring at 16:34 thanks to Thomas Schemitsch’s, 8th goal of the season. From the center point, he sent a wrist shot over McIntyre’s glove to the top left corner of the net. Curtis Valk and Josh Brown picked up assists on the play, and Thunderbirds took a 1-0 lead. Providence’s best chance for the period came on the power play, when Colby Cave rang the iron off the corner post with 6:30 to play. Valk had a breakaway late in the period, but McIntyre shut it down keeping it 1-0 Springfield into the intermission. The P-Bruins opened up the first 2:00 of the 2nd period with four aggressive offensive shots on Sateri. Fitzgerald tied the the score 1-1 with his 12th goal of the season just 2:03 into the period. Jeremy Lauzon blasted a slap-shot from the left blueline that Sateri initially stopped, but the rebound went right to Fitzgerald in the right slot and he buried a wrist shot to make it 1-1. Providence had strong defensive plays but couldn’t stop Valk from scoring his 12th goal of the season for the Thunderbirds at 6:19.
