We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday, 10am - 12 noon. We now take it in turns to host in our homes and consequently it is FREE to attend.

For further information please contact Eleanor Goodwin on

01630 638 701 or email [email protected] Pop along and try us out, we would love to see you.

It is some time now since it was decided to create a quarterly parish newsletter, the main objective being to bring the whole parish together to pass on news and views, information about events and to share interests.

To that end we appealed to all of you to come forward and offer any skills or interests you had. The Walking Group successfully formed and grew in this way. As did The Tern Stylers, when Eleanor Goodwin sought support from the community to join her in creating a group of 'crafters'.

Over the months the group has grown and we are now eight in number. We meet at each other’s homes every other Thursday morning to work on our own pieces. The diversity of interests is wide and we are all learning new skills from each other.

Crochet, knitting, embroidery/crewel work, patchwork and rug making are all on offer at the moment!

But there is more important aspect to this. We making new friends. Prior to the formation of the group, few of these people knew each other and now I think I can say that the experience of meeting new people and forging friendships, through a common interest, is life enhancing. Helen Tyler.

A warm welcome from all at the The Tractor Club meets Red Lion Pub – Wistanswick! on the first Tuesday of You can now find us on: Twitter @WistanswickRedL every month at 7.30pm Facebook TheRedLionWistanswick at the Parish Hall

Story from the Parish With special thanks to Helen Tyler for this issues’ story Stoke upon Tern Millennium Tapestry

1999 was coming to a close and a group of parish representatives from all walks of life, came together to form an action group to discuss and plan a fitting way for the community to mark the coming of the new millennium. They named themselves Tern 2000.

It was finally agreed that a tapestry could be made that would celebrate our community in all its diversity. Mrs Jacqui Wright was Headteacher at the school at that time and a member of Tern 2000, so Stoke on Tern Primary became the hub in which this artwork would be brought to life. Vicki Hamblin, a past teacher at the school and a talented artist, was asked to do the initial blueprint. For many months she toured the parish, photographing and sketching familiar landmarks.

This research was then transferred by Vicki, onto the huge canvas. The words at the bottom of the canvas "Peace and Good Neighbourhood", are inscribed on the church bell in the tower. A place many children visited. I know because I accompanied one such group up to those lofty heights!

The baton was then handed to Mrs Myra Barnett, an employee at school but most importantly, a skilled embroiderer. She ensured the progress of the work as groups of children spent part of each day working on a section at a time. Every single child who was at school during this period, added a small part to the tapestry. They soon learnt how to stitch and how to work collaboratively. It became a truly community project because every visitor, be they parents, delivery men, inspectors or staff members, were invited to 'add a stitch or two'. No-one refused! In fact no-one could escape because the tapestry frame was set up in the school foyer.

Myra enlisted the help of her sister, Mrs Mim Waters and between them and others the tapestry was eventually completed.

The final act was to have it professionally framed and hung in the church for present and future generations of families to enjoy.

Hopefully the children, now young adults, who added their stitches, will take pride in their efforts. It is an everlasting tribute to the community spirit that is alive and well in the Parish of Stoke upon Tern. "Peace and Good Neighbourhood".

Please visit the Parish Church of St Peter to see this wonderful piece of work for yourselves.

13 Dutton Close Residents Association (DCRA)

The DCRA have just held their first meeting of the year. Following which we are hoping to have a big tidy up on the park in March so the park is at its best ready for the children to make the most of once the weather improves. We will be adding new bark under the climbing structure, mowing and strimming the ground as well as repainting the benches. If anyone would like to help us with this we would be very appreciative of any time you have to spare, all equipment and resources would be provided by DCRA.

The park is managed by DCRA and as such we need to raise all the funds 3 1

associated with its upkeep and insurance costs. There will be a quiz night at 3

8pm on Wednesday April 20th held at The Sandbrook Vaults, which we hope

will help to raise money to pay towards the new bark. Please come along to

support the park while having some fun at the same time.

If anyone would like to make a contribution towards the park upkeep or volunteer their time to help with the general maintenance please email us directly at: [email protected]

Thank you to all those who've helped with maintaining the park and giving generous donations

Telford & Wrekin Council is withdrawing

its funding for the 341/342 cross-border route to , which will affect many residents in our Parish. We do not know, at the time of going to press, what Council’s view is. We’ll keep you updated via the website.

15 WISTANSWICK FETE 2016 - SAVE THE DATE

Yet again, the best day out in the Parish, Wistanswick Fete, is being held this year, as always, at Chapel Bank, Wistanswick on Saturday July 16th, together with the Horse Show, Dog Show, Garden & Produce, stalls, games, refreshments and all the other things that go on to make it a great day out!.

Over the last year some new people have said that they want to get involved, this is great news as the fete is organised by a handful of volunteers; it has been the same people for the last few years, so with new blood bringing new ideas this will ensure that the Fete, although it has been going for about 80 years, will continue to evolve to be bigger and better.

If you have ideas and are willing to get involved, please come forward; the organisation is not particularly onerous, just regular contacts and discussions plus following a checklist of the jobs that need doing.

Also should you want to help on the day, at whatever level would be great.

The planning process for this year is just starting so the organising group will welcome offers of help, no matter how small; we will be holding a meeting shortly, probably in the Red Lion, if you like to get involved please contact:

Richard Wright on [email protected] or call on 01630 638520 or Jackie Jeffries on 07554 948168 or Liv Wilcox on 07880 738456.

The current newsletter committee are; Sue Bartram, Helen Tyler & Marie Speight.

The next newsletter will be out in June 2016

Thanks for reading the newsletter, we hope that you have found it useful and of interest. If you would like to get involved in the next issues and its production, or have a story or activity to tell us about then please get in touch by: the 10th May 2016
