396 T HE A MERICAN A LPINE J OURNAL, 2002 Nepal New peaks in 2001. A press release from Kathmandu on April 10 declared that His Majesty’s Government would open 15 new peaks within one week and 50 more during the post monsoon season. However, after the spring season was underway the Government announced the opening of just nine peaks with immediate effect. This is the first time any peaks have been opened while a climbing season was in progress. These nine peaks comprised six in the Khumbu and one each in the Manaslu, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri regions. The peaks listed were: Lhotse Middle Lhotse Middle, 8413m, just opened and already climbed (8413m), Peak 38 (Shartse II: 7590m), (see full story earlier in the journal). Yuri Koshelenko Hungchi (7136m), Numri (6677m), Teng Kangpoche (6500m), and Nhe Serku (5927m), all in the Khumbu, plus P2 (6251m) in the Manaslu region, Thorang Peak (5751m) in the Annapurna region, and Thapa Peak (6012m) in the Dhaulagiri region. New Peaks for 2002. The Government of Nepal officially announced the opening of 103 additional peaks to foreign expeditions. The announcement came on Christmas Eve 2001 and took effect from March 1, 2002. Unlike the 10 peaks brought on to the list in 1998 (Visit Nepal Year) for a two-year period only, it is reported these new additions will be permanent. Speaking in Kathmandu, Ganesh Raj Karki, Chief of the Mountaineering Department at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, said,“This would not only help promote Nepal as the prime destination for mountaineering but also help development of the areas around these mountains.” Together with the nine peaks added to the list in spring 2001, mountaineers will now be allowed to climb 263 peaks throughout the Nepal Himalaya. -

By Jon Krakauer Straddling the top of the world, one foot in Tibet and the other in Nepal, I cleared the ice from my oxygen mask, hunched a shoulder against the wind, and stared absently at the vast sweep of earth below. I understood on some dim, detached level that it was a spectacular sight. I'd been fantasizing about this moment, and the release of emotion that would accompany it, for many months. But now that I was finally here, standing on the summit of Mount Everest, I just couldn't summon the energy to care. It was the afternoon of May 10. I hadn't slept in 57 hours. The only food I'd been able to force down over the preceding three days was a bowl of Ramen soup and a handful of peanut M&M;'s. Weeks of violent coughing had left me with two separated ribs, making it excruciatingly painful to breathe. Twenty-nine thousand twenty-eight feet up in the troposphere, there was so little oxygen reaching my brain that my mental capacity was that of a slow child. -

Here, 11we provide an in-depth review of alternative energy sourcing technologies for aviation revealed to date, which we 12classified into three main categories, namely liquid fuels (biofuels, electrofuels), electric aviation (all electric and 13hybrid), and carbon-free options (hydrogen-based, solar-powered). For liquid fuels, 10 pathways were reviewed, for 14which we supply the detailed process flow picturing all input, output, and co-products generated. The market uptake 15and use of these co-products were also investigated, along with the overall international regulations and targets for 16future aviation. As most of the inventoried pathways require hydrogen, we further reviewed six existing and 17emerging carbon-free hydrogen production technologies. Our review also details the five key battery technologies 18available (lithium-ion, advanced lithium-ion, solid-state battery, lithium-sulfur, lithium-air) for aviation, as well as 19the possible configuration schemes for electric propulsion (parallel electric hybrid, series electric hybrid, all electric, 20partial turboelectric and full turboelectric) and reflects upon the inclusion of hydrogen-powered fuel cells with these 21configurations. -

Reduction of numbers of mechanical fasteners together with bonding technology application can be one of the possibilities how to decrease costs of the structure. In the paper, results based on fatigue testing of novel design approaches for damage tolerant high load transfer (HLT) joints, as e.g. panel joints, are discussed for carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) adherents. Fatigue experimental results and numerical simulations of Wide Single Lap Shear (WSLS) specimen are presented for different configurations to proof the crack stopping behaviour of "state of the art" fasteners as reference crack arrestor concept. Introduction One of the main aims of designers is application of cost-effective strategies. The composite structures can lower costs of an airframe significantly, but there are some obstacles to adopt of advanced technologies like adhesive bonding or welding and prevent to use full strength capabilities of these technologies to real structures. Nowadays, there is no fully certified bonded technology applicable to full-scale airframe structure which comply airworthiness regulations from viewpoint of damage tolerance criteria. -

Cathy O'Dowd The First Woman to Summit Everest from North & South Sides The first woman to conquer both the north and south sides of Everest Cathy O'Dowd is the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, from both its north and south sides. Her first ascent of Everest happened in the midst of the chaoc events that form of the basis of the 'true story' behind the Hollywood movie Everest. TOPICS: IN DETAIL: Remote Keynoting Cathy, who grew up in South Africa, was compleng her Masters degree in Reaching New Heights: Teamwork and Journalism, while working as a university lecturer, when she saw a newspaper Leadership from the Slopes of Mount advert for a place on the 1st South African Everest Expedion. Six months later Everest she was the first South African to summit Everest and three years later she Think Like An Explorer: Doing What became the first woman in the world to climb the mountain from both sides. Cathy was also part of the team that did the first ascent of Motivation and Inspiration Nanga Parbat via the Mazeno ridge. Everest Kangshung Face Trek Day 01: Arrive in Lhasa (3,650 m / 11,972 ft) Upon your arrival in Lhasa, a representative from Upper-Himalayan Treks and Adventure will meet you at an agreed upon location. The objective is to maximize the total energy in the system while staying within a 3 km mission radius and meeting other system constraints. -

State of the art is the widely used “chicken rivet” as crack arrestor which is limiting the benefits of bonding technology, particularly in composite bonded joints. In this paper results from fatigue testing of novel design approaches for damage tolerant high load transfer (HLT) joints as e.g. Panel Joints or large bonded repairs will be discussed for CFRP and for Fiber Matel Laminates´(FML) adherents. Results from fatigue testing with Wide Single Lapshear (WSLS) specimen will be presented for different configurations to proof the crack stopping behavior of sate of the art fasteners as reference crack arrestor concept. STATE OF THE ART BONDING TECHNOLOGY With the entry into service of the A350XWB a consequent evolution of the usage of CFRP for primary structures within Airbus Group has reached the next milestone. After a long and excellent experience with CFRP in civil and military applications, first applied on secondary structures and since 1983 for the vertical stabilizer as first major primary structural component for civil aircrafts, Airbus Group has now reached the next step in the transition from a metallic to a composite aircraft with the first CFRP fuselage of an Airbus aircraft on A350 XWB. -
