First of all, as regards the ham radio world: it will be, in absolute terms, the first radio "activation" of the vessel. Secondly, we must also consider that the history of Williamsburg and what it represents, particularly in the U.S., will allow us to create an event that, properly managed by the communication point of view, could have considerable resonance in environments outside the amateur radio . In the next few pages we retrace the milestones in the history of Williamsburg, to better understand its importance. • Victorian and Edwardian Era Passenger Ships and the Extensive Use of Wood by Boat Builders H
VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ERA PASSENGER SHIPS AND THE EXTENSIVE USE OF WOOD BY BOAT BUILDERS H. David Vuckson From the very earliest days after the arrival of the railway in 1855, Collingwood’s harbour was a major transfer point in the movement of people and goods between Toronto and “The West” a term whiCh, in those days, meant Lake MiChigan, ChiCago and isolated places along the north shore wilderness of Georgian Bay and Lake Superior. That year the Ontario, SimCoe & Huron Union Railway built the first of two wooden grain elevators that would stand in the harbour where ships from ChiCago Could unload their Cargo of grain. That first elevator was relatively small and is thought to have been destroyed by fire. The railway’s suCCessor, The Northern Railway, would build the muCh larger landmark seCond wooden elevator in 1870. In addition to ship-to-shore transfers of grain, lumbering around Georgian Bay was a huge industry given the massive stands of virgin timber that Covered the land and the resulting log booms for the sawmills oCCupied muCh space in Collingwood harbour. The waters of the bay were teeming with 1 of 16 fish Creating the need for a Collingwood-based fishing fleet. All of these various enterprises involved the use of wooden boats and it was natural that the Craft of wooden boat building would be Carried on in Collingwood. Long before the Collingwood Shipyard of the 20th Century existed or had even been thought of, vast numbers of fishing boats, yachts, sChooners, sCows, lumber barges and the tugs to tow them were all needed for the 19th Century CommerCe on Georgian Bay and several family surnames—Watts, Doherty and Morrill in partiCular—were prominent in Collingwood wooden boat building, the Watts family having arrived in 1850 when the place was known as the Hen & ChiCkens Harbour and the townsite was a “dismal swamp”.

The stadium included a cinder track, a turf track and around the outer edge of the arena, immediately below the seats, a concrete cycle track with contours banked up at the curves to a height of 10 feet. The designers boasted, '60 miles an hour could be attained with perfect safety'. The swimming pool was fourteen feet deep at its centre to accommodate diving displays, it had the novel feature of a 55 foot diving tower. The distance from the start of the Marathon to the finish at the stadium was established at these games. The original distance of 25 miles was changed to 26 miles so the marathon could start at Windsor Castle, and then changed again at the request of Princess Mary so the start would be beneath the windows of the Royal Nursery. The 1948 Olympic Games were the first of the postwar era. Britain was still suffering the after effects of the war. Rationing was in operation.
