FALLEN MASTERS by MAURIE ALIOFF by Exorcist—Mania, the Wicker Man Tanked at the Box Office
The Cinar story began with a horror movie. Soon after meeting for the first time in New Orleans in the early 1970s, company founders Micheline Charest and Ron Weinberg happened to see the now legendary British picture, The Wicker Man. Impressed by the film's strange power, the two movie lovers also saw an opportunity in it. Written by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth, Frenzy), and directed by one—shot wonder Robin Hardy, The Wicker Man cooks up a delirious alternate reality that feels like it was made under the influence of a witch's spell. The story focuses on a police investigator (Edward Woodward), who travels to a remote Scottish island where he discovers that the local people, among them an aris- tocrat played by Christopher Lee, are devo- tees of a neo—pagan cult. The oddly named Sergeant Howie, a strictly orthodox Christian who intends to remain a virgin until his wedding night, is horrified by the island's un—Christian hedonism. Released in England on a double bill with Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now, and swamped FALLEN MASTERS BY MAURIE ALIOFF by Exorcist—mania, The Wicker Man tanked at the box office. Charest and Weinberg picked up the rights from Warner Bros., stashed a print in their car trunk and travelled the midnight—movie circuit. The Quebecoise (Charest) and the New Yorker (Weinberg) helped turn a unique film into a cult item and for their efforts netted about $250,000. Ironically, the couple's even- tual rise and fall, from hugely successful producers and distributors of wholesome children's shows to industry outcasts accused of fraud, originated with a story about moral righteousness destroyed by amoral devotion to the material world. -

Significant elements of this cultural fabric are film and television, streamed into homes via a number of devices and from across many different countries and decades. My research interest lies in how folklore is communicated onscreen in this way, not only by what is represented on screen, but how and in what contexts. Examination of such texts can suggest to us how customs and rituals change over time and evolutions of belief and attitude, which directly affect how people may experience relevant archive material. For example, consider the representation of Voodoo in Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965) or shrunken heads in numerous cinematic examples, including Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1994). Texts like these may be the very first experience many people have with concepts about such physical artefacts, before having come into close contact with them in a museum and, perhaps, even before questions about racism or colonialism are raised for them (the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford recently removed its famous collection of shrunken heads as part of a decolonisation process). -

Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man. -

Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal). -

Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali This may well become a very important book. It is certainly a very controversial one. Ali’s subtitle reveals the reason for both statements. In her first chapter, Ali divides Muslims—not Islam, but Muslims—into three groups and provides a list of five aspects of Islam to be reformed. The first of the three groups she calls Medina Muslims, those who are willing to enforce Islam by violence. The second is the Mecca Muslims, those who strive to be devout Muslims and who eschew violence. The third group Ali calls reforming Muslims, those who strive to adapt “seventh century teachings to a twenty-first century world.” Then comes Ali’s bombshell—the list of five areas of Islam that she believes must be reformed: (1) Mohammed’s semi-divine status and the literalist reading of the Koran, especially the verses composed in Medina; (2) the priviledging of life after death over life now; (3) Shari law; (4) the authorizing individual enforcement, by violence if necessary, of Islamic belief and law; and (5) the imperative of jihad, understood as violent holy war. Ali identifies Muslim supopression of critical thinking about Islam as the biggest obstacle to the reformation she is calling for. Quite naturally, it is Ali’s life that has brought her to these positions. Born in Somalia, she was raised in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, and Kenya. She remembers being sixteen in Nairobi, wearing a hijab, and believing aqithout uestion that Salman Rushdie deserved to be slain because he had dishonored the Prophet in his novel The Satanic Verses. -

religions Article Political Islam: A 40 Year Retrospective Nader Hashemi Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver, Denver, CO 80208, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The year 2020 roughly corresponds with the 40th anniversary of the rise of political Islam on the world stage. This topic has generated controversy about its impact on Muslims societies and international affairs more broadly, including how governments should respond to this socio- political phenomenon. This article has modest aims. It seeks to reflect on the broad theme of political Islam four decades after it first captured global headlines by critically examining two separate but interrelated controversies. The first theme is political Islam’s acquisition of state power. Specifically, how have the various experiments of Islamism in power effected the popularity, prestige, and future trajectory of political Islam? Secondly, the theme of political Islam and violence is examined. In this section, I interrogate the claim that mainstream political Islam acts as a “gateway drug” to radical extremism in the form of Al Qaeda or ISIS. This thesis gained popularity in recent years, yet its validity is open to question and should be subjected to further scrutiny and analysis. I examine these questions in this article. US: No regrets for organizer of cartoon Contest—The woman behind the Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in Garland, Texas, that was the target of an attack by militants said she had no regrets. Pamela Geller told The Associated Press in an interview on 7 May. Geller's American Freedom Defense Initiative organized the contest to draw Islam's prophet. Geller's group was also behind controversial ads in the New York subway that read: "In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man." In smaller letters, it added: "Support Israel. Defeat Jihad." Geller also run an organization called Stop Islamization of America, which spearheaded the effort to prevent the construction of a Muslim community center near the site of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. US: Megachurch Pastor Robert Jeffress: Satan 'Delivered' Islam to Muhammad, Following Islam Will 'Lead You to Hell'—Dallas megachurch pastor Robert Jeffress said on 10 May during his ‘Countdown to the Apocalypse,’ sermon series that it was Satan who delivered the religion of Islam to the prophet Muhammad and further asserted that following that religion will ‘lead you to hell.’ In his six-week sermon series, Jeffress, who pastors Dallas' 11,000-member First Baptist Church, explained how Jesus told of the rise of radical Islam and that increased Christian persecution around the world would precede His return to this Earth.
